I personally prefer filtered well water to any other.

matter of opinion...i grew up on well water and raleigh water tastes like a chemical repository

don't get me wrong, i don't buy bottled water...i filter mine and add a bit of lemon, and that tastes great...but raleigh water is far from tasting "good"

I mean that they have said they don't mind the taste of their tap water and just use the bottles because it's easier, or something.

check out your energy calculator to see how much you use...
http://www.nwf.org/energy/greencalculator.cfm

i also hate it when ppl only drink bottled water...water filters are awesome these days and they have NO excuse...you can install one on your spicket, for goodness sake (for lazy ppls). i personally LOVE the water out of our fridge...it is filtered, but it's the best around.

I think City of Raleigh will pick that stuff up now. This is all I could find, but I think they pick up tv's and things other than just computers:
Quote :
"
Residents must call Solid Waste Services at 831-6890 to arrange for the special computer collection. Once an appointment is made the resident can leave the computer equipment at the curbside. Please do not set equipment out prior to the morning of the day designated for collection as it is not uncommon for such equipment to be taken by other people before city crews can get to it the next day."

If someone sets something beside the dumpster it usually still works and they want you to pick it up. If it was trash they'd toss it in the dumpster.

As far as the "living green" thing goes...I guess I am more conscientious now than I have been in the past. My house with two people makes one bag of trash and two bins filled over the top with recyclables just about every week. I actually bought a second trash can for my place at Lake Gaston this year and I bring the recyclables back with me. It's a pretty simple thing to do, but I bring back at least 1/2 of the green bin every week with all the beer and soda that gets drank up there.

For anyone who cares, there's a new delivery business in Raleigh that delivers local, organic food to your house each week. They're called Papa Spuds. My boss uses them, and has only good things to say about them, except that they're kinda expensive.

I disaggree w/ this somewhat. The "throw away society" we currently have is rather recent.

You could also debate modern technology, combustion engines etc on this, but meh I don't have the want.

the only real value i see in going green is being more mindful of wastefulness and conserving out NONRENEWABLE resources

the problem are these bullshit "organic" operations and so-called eco-friendly products that are not only minimally effective at best, but many are flat out lies to the public and are meant to capitalize on a new market

in five years thell have moved on to something else

air dryers in your bathroom are not saving trees, paper towels are not wasting trees, organic/free range farming is almost completely a scam (except for the few who genuinely make the effort and they arent gonna last)

if you take a small patch of land and manage it properly and wisely incorporate all methods of farming and crop care you can do better than these massive, mega organic farming operations and will probably be more sustainable in the long run

its just a bunch of bullshit, all this movement has done is make the sheep completely narrowminded towards traditional farming, almost to the point of lunacy and drawing evercloser to physical violence

I don't know why we are back on organic rants, when we've already talked about how stupid it is, w/ some exceptions. OMG YOU CHANGED MY FUCKING MIND YOU ARE MY FUCKING SAVIOUR

If you will take notice, most people in this thread are pushing locally grown produce, and some of us are growing our own. OMG YOU ARE A FUCKING BECKON OF LIFE CHANGING INFORMATION

And yes, we get it...most of the "green" you see being marketed isn't really.....DUUURRR

so im supposed to, what, not say anything?

i consolidated my overall views of the green industry into one post just like the title says

i dont think you two know how a public forum works

^um, that organic farming is a farce at best? that farming is best done using all methods of stewardship in a timely and cost effective manner, not just one half of methods

genetic modification, selection, chemicals, observation, cleanliness, and biology should all be used

i didn't say that everyone that goes green is cheap - it just seems that most of the people i've encountered that say they are/have are just cheap and want ways to cut down on their costs

of course this doesn't work for the people that truly are going green b/c some of the efforts require you to spend more money than the alternative - thus those options are often skipped

I mostly don't give a shit.
My car is a V8 with about 15mpg.
I never take public transportation. It's slow, inconvenient, crowded, and has too many ugly/poor/stinky/crazy people.
I run the air conditioner all summer and the heater all winter.
I recycle in public places if a receptacle is within easy reach. I don't save anything for recycling at home.
I don't compost, but then again, I don't have any houseplants or a yard to use compost in.
I use water and electricity sparingly to save money, not the environment.
I use paper towels frequently.
I throw trash out the car window when no one's around to call the cops about it.

I recycle.
Don't use much AC/Heat or Light.
I use cruise control and I drive a Ranger (~20mpg, nothing to brag about).
I eat more vegetables and less animal products than the average person.
I take 5 min showers.
I usually let urine mellow in the toilet.
I hand wash dishes.

it's a fad. Americans love doing something without doing anything. Most "green" people buy an organic cotton shirt but won't pick up trash in a park. It's like the yellow ribbon magnet folks who want to support the troops without damaging their car's paint.

Nerdchick, i think there are different groups of people, not just one lump sum of Americans that do the same thing as a huge group:
1) people that would rather not know what's going on and blindly do what they want, regardless of what that is (i would put these people in the listen to Bob & the Showgram and don't listen to the news, etc.)
2) people that do little bits here at there (maybe only recycle, etc.) but if they were given more info, they might do more
3) people that are actively trying to do more and looking for ideas to reduce/recycle/reuse
4) people that know a good deal about all of this and have a good attitude and want to teach others
5) people that know a good deal about all of this and think that everyone else sucks b/c they don't either know or do anything.

i made this thread specifically to give those that want more info (or those that are ignorant) a place to learn more from people just like you.

please enlighten us.

I like to buy organic stuff, but I was doing it before it was "cool." Has less to do with environmental concerns and more to do with pesticides scare me

my thoughts are that conservation never produces any electricity, gas, or beer.

if i use a lot of that shit, somebody will make more since they know im going to buy it.

if i dont use it, people wont make as much.

look what happened with water rates.

people stopped using as much, so they had to raise rates since they sell water and obviously weren't selling as much.
