What's great about ff3? I only installed it at work and used it for a day or so and so far I've only noticed that the address bar drop down now takes up like 4 lines per site which is terrible. Looks like they also got rid of my arrow to the right of the address bar.
I'm sure these things can be tweaked back to my liking, but what are the benefits of ff3 that I'm not seeing. Memory usage?9/2/2008 7:23:02 PM |

Google Gears doesn't really have anything to do with that - Gears is just the offline mode for certain applications The Google pages loading faster almost certainly have to do with the new V8 JavaScript virtual machine. Gmail, Reader, Calendar etc are extremely heave on JavaScript, so it would stand to reason these would benefit most from V8 9/2/2008 9:06:09 PM |

ha!
I just had about ten tabs open, in one i was watching Cobert's 8 Best Athiest Moments videos. When it crashed. Chrome hates atheism!
So it froze all of Chrome up for a min or two... but! i killed the biggest of the Chrome processes (80mb) and it killed only the flash on the page. Everything else in Chrome is still open and running great including the Colbert tab minus flash.
Pretty cool i guess. 9/2/2008 9:20:38 PM |

i've been wondering how the crashing stuff works... I looked at the processes, and i wish there was a way to differentiate should the need arise... thats the thing that im skeptical about...
at any rate, even if I kill the whole browser, its no worse than any other browser. 9/2/2008 9:26:23 PM |

check out the about:memory URL. Very cool - it gets the memory usage for all of the Chrome processes, and also gets the memory for any other running browser.
I did my own little memory test. I opened fresh sessions of Chrome, FF3, and IE7 and opened the following pages and let them load fully, but didn't do anything in them: gmail, tech talk, youtube, cnn, googled "2008 election", and google reader Then used about:memory in Chrome to compare it all - Chrome easily the best, IE7 by far the worst

I really the History page. It loads so fast and the layout is really clean and nice. For as much hype as the FF3 Places feature got (i think that's the name - the SQLite database or whatever that holds all the history and bookmarks) it's really quite cumbersome and not nearly as fast as it could be. Chrome's Hisotry is the way it should be done 9/2/2008 9:50:41 PM |

I like how it shows the bookmarks bar when you open a new tab, lets me leave it off normal tabs and get that much more screen space.
It's also nice how the tabs take up the same bar as the window controls. No persistent status bar is also a plus. 9/2/2008 10:00:59 PM |

Aside from adblock and mouse gestures, I've found the thing that I miss the most are the features from google toolbar.
It's weird that google releases a full blown browser and it doesn't even include a single feature from their own firefox toolbar add-on. 9/2/2008 10:12:53 PM |

I love the new Google Chrome Browser, especially the…:
* - really fast render speed, * - new tab page * - and the ability to create a new window from a tab that you drop outside chrome.
Naturally, I am missing all my nice add-ons from Firefox, mainly the adblock add-on!
So I found an alternative solution: using Privoxy. Privoxy is a small web proxy that runs locally and has the ability to filter ads.
* 1. Download & install http://www.privoxy.org/ * 2. And then set Google chrome’s proxy options: Options->Under the hood->change proxy settings->Lan Settings Check: “Use a proxy server for your LAN” And under advanced add proxy address 127.0.0.1 port 8118 for http and secure but leave ftp blank.
Now you can surf the web with Google Chrome and a lot less ads! " |
i'm about to try this proxy, stop me if it's a mistake.
--Works well for TWW at least. We'll see how many ads it blocks and if it's counter intuitive.

that has something to do with the javascript implementation. Cursor placement in text areas after JS operations (like clicking any of the smiley or toolbar buttons) seems to be different in all browsers, including IE vs. FF 9/3/2008 10:03:30 AM |

Yeah, I'm not sure I like tabs on top either. I kinda liked them at first, but it is further for me to move the mouse to switch tabs. (I know, I know, Ctrl+Tab, but still) 9/3/2008 10:51:26 AM |
agentlion All American 13936 Posts user info edit post |
i doubt they'll move the tab bar, or allow you to move it. They're trying to force the user into a new way of thinking - the tab you're in is completely independent, with its own address bar and set of commands. That tab can be moved, or closed or whatever without affecting other tabs, and all the information in that tab, including the address bar, go with it. The concept makes sense, but it's understandable that it's a bit jarring, coming from IE or FF.
btw - they totally nailed the "no menu bar" concept. Much better than IE7. They successfully put all the options we need into two simple button-menus and other interface features, instead of the strange combination of buttons, labels and menus that IE7 has... 9/3/2008 11:07:30 AM |

Quote : | "The first, is the popular "carpet bomb" vulnerability that still exists within Chrome, as pointed out on our forums by our member matessim. This vulnerability allows malicious websites to drive by download and execute programs on your machine. Our visitors may remember the uproar that this same vulnerability caused for Safari users, and that Apple patched the carpet-bombing issue with Safari v3.1.2. Chrome is vulnerable to this exploit because it is based on the same engine, WebKit 525.13, and Google did not patch or update the engine before releasing the software.
The other, and less technical, problem with Chrome exists in its EULA. More specifically, the point that would seem to give Google rights to anything you post on the Internet while using their browser, mostly in conjunction with the promotion of its services." |
