no, i read what you wrote, but my point still stands.

Look, I am not a huge dude. I'm 5'8", 180-185 lbs. I don't say this to put you down, or to try to act like billy badass (I mean, really...I'm not one to brag about being able to beat up a girl). I'm saying this because I think a lot of you women grossly misunderstand the level of disparity between a man and a woman in a physical altercation.

Neither would I be anxious to give this a try, first of all because I would not enjoy get hit in the head with a lead pipe, and second because I'm not into beating up women...but I am pretty confident that I could give you a free first shot with a lead pipe and then kill you barehanded in less than 1 minute. There is some chance that you'd get lucky and knock me out, but even with the lead pipe, I think you'd mostly give me a really bad headache and make me really pissed off.


If you think you might ever want to physically intervene on the behalf of anyone, or for that matter, if you think you might need to physically defend yourself, I encourage you to get a concealed carry permit and buy a TASER or a handgun (which you should get some training on and practice with regularly, and you should only carry it if you are fully prepared to look someone in the eye and kill him).

im not proud ive done this stuff but i was in situations where i HAD to fight back or something even worse would happen to me.

If you have taken a basic self defense course, especially one that is tailored to women, you know that size is not everything and that it can even be a disadvantage to an attacker. Self defense courses teach you how to fight smart and fight dirty when it is called for.

Don't underestimate what a woman can do in a fight. There have been a number of would-be attackers who learned a tough lesson in doing so. I have never had to use what I learned about self defense in a real life situation -- other than rough housing with my husband or brother. And I hope that I never do. But I think that we all personally know women who have been attacked for one reason or another and ended up getting the best of their attacker.

Needless to say, I think that all women need to take a self defense course. It could save your life.

I understand what the Bystander Effect is, but I still can't believe nobody stepped in and did anything. You'd think people would at least be screaming "WTF," or called the cops or something. Instead, everybody stood around like deer staring into headlights.

I'd like to think that I would have done something, but in all honesty I probably would have felt as helpless and confused as the other people. I'm also not sure I'd be able to do much damage to that guy, at least not before he kicks my teeth in.

Taking a self-defense course is certainly a good idea, but don't be under any illusion that much has really changed as a result--you still are probably going to get destroyed in an altercation with the average adult male. physiology is not on your side, and spending 2 or 20 hours in a self-defense class (with little or probably no real practical application of full-contact fighting) is NOT going to prepare you to do much of anything. It is absolutely better than nothing if every other option has been exhausted (i.e. running away, fast and far), but don't get a false sense of security about things.

krav maga is, in my opinion, shitty if you want to fight other people who know what they are doing (i.e., it isn't much good if you want to compete in MMA or something)...but it's good for relatively quickly teaching someone how to kick the ass of someone who isn't skilled in hand-to-hand fighting. They do essentially what the USMC does with our martial arts program (MCMAP)...sample effective techniques from various styles that can be taught easily and performed by most people even under duress.

...and it's funny you mention krav maga, because the overall philosophy is exactly what i described:

My sister (and I) took karate classes for about 8-10 years, had her 2nd degree black belt, and could seriously kick just about any guy's ass before she went to college.

But I think if you put her in a fight with an average guy 50% bigger than she was at the peak of her training, he'd probably have received a tremendous beating, but if he chose to persist he'd probably eventually be able to overpower her.

That said, most men wouldn't do well in a fight with someone 50% bigger than them either.

I agree with Duke here. Not to talk down to women or anything, but the difference is physical strength is amazing.

I mean, I go to the gym with my girlfriend now. even in high school, I would spot some of the girls in class. it was fucking amazing how weak most of them were in comparison to guys. seeming light weights ( like 70 or 100 lbs) on bench press.....and they were struggling to lift it ONCE.

or even wrestling/playing around with my girlfriend (or any girlfriend I've ever had), it's so easy to overpower them. and to move much quicker than them.

so to talk about a woman fighting a man when the guy is pissed off, and in 'go' mode is retarded. hell, when your adrenaline is pumping, even things like a shot to the nuts may not stop a guy. sure it hurts, but pain takes a back seat when you're fighting

Self defense classes do not teach you to "kick someone's ass" at any rate. They teach you to stun, disable, and get the fuck away. Self defense certainly teaches you to fight dirty and use every day items as weapons. Just by the nature of the class, you're taught to inflict as much damage as possible in a short amount of time because the idea is to strike hard, fast, and get away. In an ideal situation, you are not only able to get away, but you have left them unable to follow. I do not think that it gives women a false sense of security, but it does turn them into something more than just a victim.

I took a class with a woman who was attacked. She ended up with a black eye, but she broke her attacker's nose and saved her life.

I understand (although i think you would be almost impossibly hard pressed to render an attacked "incapable of following". that's a tall order even for me, unless i could knock him out or get a choke applied). it's more like get him to let you go, then fucking run...then if he catches up, do it again...you're buying yourself time until he says "fuck it" or help arrives.

breaking his nose is good medicine, but if he really wants to put the hurt on you, i doubt that would stop him. it would probably give a chance to create some distance between you, though.
