I wasn't at all surprised by the Obama and Hagan wins. I was, however, surprised by the McCrory loss--I mean, people must have just not been watching the same debates and examining the same candidates that I was.

McCrory kicked Perdue's ass all across this state. But he obviously didn't on Election Day--the only day that counts for politicians.

it was the fucking straight ticket voters that did him in.

Dems - 59% straight ticket voting
Reps - 40% straight ticket voting

So what would it take to get the straight ticket option off the ballot? We could call it the Bev Perdue bill.

^^^^ yep. I dont see how anyone with a brain could vote for her (and I am not even a huge McCrory fan)

And I also agree straight ticket voting is stupid. Honestly, Id love for them to not even list the party they are affiliated with on the ticket so that people who don't put the effort into studying them beforehand can't simply vote by party but I know a lot of people wouldn't go for that. But its frustrating to see people go into the polls only to vote for Obama and in the process cast a vote for someone like her just because they did straight ticket. Well its frustrating to see that on either side honestly, but I used Obama here since I see that as the cause for the McCrory loss.

So does anyone here actually know someone that voted Perdue? I don't. Then again it'd have a hard time keeping the kind of person that would support Perdue in my social circle.

FYI:

Women now the majority on NC Council of State

Quote :
"RALEIGH, N.C. — Female candidates have succeeded in making themselves a majority on North Carolina's Council of State.

Tuesday's election of Beverly Perdue as governor, Beth Wood as state auditor and Janet Cowell as state treasurer means six of the 10 top elected statewide offices are now held by women.

They join Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry, state school superintendent June Atkinson and Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, who all won re-election.

Wood ousted Republican incumbent Les Merritt, while Cowell beat GOP candidate Bill Daughtridge in the race to succeed Treasurer Richard Moore.

The state Supreme Court could have shifted its gender majority, but Associate Justice Bob Edmunds held off challenger Suzanne Reynolds. The court will continue to have four men and three women."

I voted for McCrory, but my wife may have gone for Perdue - not sure, we never talked about it. She is a HS teacher, though, and I would imagine that most of the talk in the teacher's circles would be for Perdue

^ Yep. If you're in education and you weren't for Perdue, you'd probably be considered a heretic.

yeah that would be nice. i think it'spretty tough to agree with every person running for office from a particular party. i just feel like when you have to choose each person individually you feel more accountable, but maybe thats just me. i think my ballot ended up being 50/50 in terms of which party the person i voted for was affiliated with. i also didn't vote for anyone i knew nothing about (unless they were running unopposed ).

This was ridiculous....did the people that voted for McCain note vote for McCrory too? How did McCain get more votes than McCrory? He was easily the best candidate for governor. I know a bunch of Dems that voted for McCrory.

Or do people believe those dumb old men on the rockers talking politics?

^^A lot of people voted for Munger. If everyone who voted for Munger had voted for McCroy, I believe he would have won (at least the last time I checked).

^That's not true (the first half of your statement)...
And if you had read the thread, you would realize I was only answering his question on why more people voted for McCain than McCrory. I liked Munger, I'm certainly not blaming him, or the people that voted for him for Perdue winning.

close, but not so:
http://www.wral.com/news/political/page/3753264/?group=governor

Candidate Votes Percent
Bev Perdue (D) 2,104,082 50%
Pat McCrory (R) 1,967,120 47%
Michael Munger (L) 120,608 3%

McCrory + Munger 2,087,728
Per - (Mc + Mun) 16,354

Yeah, that's what I thought, it was really close last time I had checked. I really wish this had actually been a race between Munger and McCrory.

Rather than create a new thread on a worthless topic, I just posted in the first open Perdue thread I found. Maybe this has been covered here...

What was up with Bev Perdue declaring a state of emergency with that snow we had a week or so ago? Maybe that is the standard procedure for NC, I don't know. Seems kinda ridiculous to me. No credible threat of power outages due to ice. Guaranteed gone in 2 days thanks to forecast highs in the 50s.

Maybe my definition of "state of emergency" is off kilter. I always thought it was reserved for things like dealing with the wake from floods, hurricanes, and large tornadoes.

I could live with Obama wining, and I was glad that Hagan won...but when McCrory lost I near about cried. We basically elected a piece of furniture to be governor. An ottoman, perhaps.

I'm actually shocked how low the straight-ticket voting numbers are. I was expecting both numbers to be in the 70's. What it looks like to me was a lack of faith of republicans in their own party, if so few were willing to vote straight down the line.

Besides, this means that 41% of Democrats and 60% of republicans could still vote for their own independent choice of governor, and the majority still went to Bev.

I'm sure it's partly that, but a big part is also new voters coming in because of Obama. He was the only candidate they really gave a shit about, so when he said "Straight Ticket Democrat" they just shrugged and went along with it.

you're off kilter

bush declared obama's an inauguration a "state of emergency" (no political jokes plz)

its just something you do when theres a strong chance of extra cash needing to be laid about

i.e., it helps make it ok for the DOT to pay massive overtime for whatever road cleaning you people actually have down there when it snows

So the question is are those numbers (the 40%):

1)the percent of registered republicans who voted straight ticket republican
2)the percent of registered republicans who voted straight ticket for either party
3)the percent of all registered voters (D, R, L, I) who voted straight ticket republican

The post is very unclear, and the difference between the three is enough to change the way one could analyze the results.
