This show needs to be taken off the air for the sake of those children. Jon and Kate have traded their kids' childhoods, and maybe long-term mental health and social development, for a more comfortable lifestyle for themselves. Instead of getting a real job, they turn their children into characters in a television show which has become nothing more than product placement advertising by a set of cute sextuplets. At least if they were child actors doing commercials they could go home at the end of the day. This whole thing is a shame.

Really?? Kate used to be a full-time nurse and STILL was working after she had the kids, but couldn't do that and Jon work full-time as a computer analyst....so she had to quit work. And the show isn't about greed or turning kids into characters. WTF. Think what you want....I mean, it's your OPINION.

I mean, I agree the kids necessarily at first weren't getting many opportunities, but they are still young, and after seeing the past TWO seasons, those kids have experienced and done more than MOST kids have at their age or older. Sure, they haven't played sports or been put in ballet classes or whatever, but it's HARD to balance that with 8 kids. The show has nothing to do with it. If anything, it's helped the children experience more by going to so many places. Just MHO!

Yes, it is my opinion. Not arguing with you there - and you are entitled to your opinion. Nor am I arguing that Jon and Kate were not put in a terribly difficult situation when they had sextuplets. They are not independently wealthy. As a nurse and "computer guy", neither are in a position to provide great financial security on their income alone. However, this makes them no different from many other families. The answer does not have to be reality television.

I disagree with the premise that Jon and Kate are trading ballet lessons for trips to Hawaii, and therefore enriching their kid's lives. I think if you really are concerned with giving children "experiences", the choice between those two activities becomes are personal preference, like vanilla or chocolate ice cream. However, the choice between ballet lessons and a trip to Hawaii as part of a reality television show - apples and oranges. The important distinction is that this is reality television, not a documentary. The television crew is not a silent, unnoticed observer. It all appears very scripted and forced.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would fail to see that these children are being made into characters. That is inherent in making reality television. Thirty minutes a week cannot encompass a person's life. In order to make the show entertaining, producers and editors craft an episode from all the possible footage, in the process creating characters by what they choose to show.

When I say that Jon and Kate are gaining a comfortable lifestyle I am talking about money, not trips to Disney World. What they are really trading is, again, not ballet for Hawaii, but their family's time and privacy for cold, hard cash. Unless you like having a television crew around for fun, it is hard to argue with the belief that Jon and Kate are utilizing their children to make themselves money. The amount, need, or how they spend that money is not relevant. They found money, and maybe fame, more important than a more normal upbringing for their children. So, yeah, I think that is a shame.

Who decides what a normal upbringing is? These kids think their life is normal, and will in all likelihood be really well adjusted. Jon and Kate mentioned in a past episode that they are doing this to create family memories, to have the best family videos ever. Also, as a way to help other overwhelmed families see what works for them. And if you've noticed, a good portion of their extended family lives far away, and they love getting to see their grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc. every week. And yes, they are kind of turning the kids into characters, but anyone who is around children knows that each child is a unique "character" anyway.

They do make time to individualize each child and get them into activities. They took the twins to cooking class and got them started on the violin and piano. Then they had the shows when they took each child out to do something they wanted to do on their own. I thought that was a really good idea.

And ^I agree, just not in those kind of words...that the twins are very annoying. I'd rather watch the cuter, little kids (that sounds really mean...but they are more entertaining)

My gf loves this show. Every time she (and me, by extension) watches it, I have to hear all about how Aiden (sp?) is her favorite kid, and when I mention how big a bitch Kate is I get the cold shoulder, lol.
