I don't think he's going to take any currently owned guns away (and i have a reasonable degree of confidence that the SCOTUS wouldn't allow that). I do think he might encourage and/or sign off on some stupid restrictions...maybe not a revived '94 AWB, but something similarly ill-conceived and poorly thought through.

I'm hoping that the left won't pull a stunt like that again, after the political costs it had for them last time and without (at least as best as i can tell) a significant push to make it a priority.

Shotguns do seem like the best for home self defense, since it's really all about who hits first. Plus they've got lots of stopping power, less chance of continuing to an unintended victim, and less chance of accidentally shooting the holder like a handgun might.
