I got a "job confirmation" in my email this morning, at the bottom it had a paragraph about "at will employment" and how everything in the letter could change "at any time".

"Durham, N.C. — The auto industry slump caught up with AW North Carolina on Thursday.

The firm, which manufactures transmissions and other equipment for Toyota at a huge complex in the Treyburn Business Park, said it would temporarily idle 280 workers. That represents more than a quarter of the work force at the plant, which is owned by a Japanese company.

AW also offered “voluntary severance” to its salaried work force.

“We told team members that because of the continued economic downturn in the automotive business world, beginning Friday, Jan. 23, the salaried work force is being offered an opportunity to take a voluntary severance package should they so desire,” Will Collins, vice president of human resources for AW, said.

“AW North Carolina also announced that approximately 280 of our 1,100 team members here will be placed on temporary time off for several weeks and will be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits and will continue to receive company-paid medical benefits during that time,” he added.

AW’s facilities covers 820,000 square feet. The firm occupies 123 acres in Treyburn.

Opened in 1998, AW North Carolina increased its employee headcount from 950 as of Jaunary 2006 to some 1,200 in 2008.

According to the company’s Web site, it manufactures torque converters, oil pumps, clutch assemblies, stamped parts and fully assembled transmissions. AW lists Toyota of North America as its customer.

“Over the past several months, we have evaluated a number of options and scenarios as we determine what is in the best, long-term interest of AW-NC and our team members,” Collins said. “We have periodically suspended daily production of transmissions and assigned production team members to other projects, special training, and skills improvement in many areas. We hope these past and current actions demonstrate how much we value AW-NC team members.”

Given the current state of the economy, Collins said the company would have to evaluate future production demand.

“We don’t know precisely what the production needs will be in coming months for transmissions and components we manufacture here,” he said. “We will continue to evaluate developments in the automotive marketplace as well as our anticipated production needs. No specific timetables to complete this evaluation have been set at this time.”

AW North Carolina is part of Aisin AW Co Ltd., a global transmission manufacturer is based in Anjo City, Japan.

The company’s first Treyburn facility, built at a cost of $100 million, employed some 250 people and covered 316,000 square feet.

In 2002, AW North Carolina expanded with an additional 430,000-square-foot building that cost $150 million. AW’s work force grew by another 450 people when that plant opened.

Last fall, as the auto industry began to feel the impact of the slowing economy, AW applied for and received a $50,000 grant from the Incumbent Worker Training Fund through the N.C. Department of Commerce. The company worked with Durham Technical Community College to provide additional training for employees that otherwise might have been laid off."

"Bloody Monday: More than 50,000 jobs lost
Six companies announce massive job cuts in a scary start to the week.

By Julianne Pepitone, CNNMoney.com contributing writer
Last Updated: January 26, 2009: 3:12 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The final week of January began with a bloodbath for the job market, as more than 50,000 more cuts were announced on Monday alone.

At least six companies from manufacturing and service industries announced cost-cutting initiatives that included slashing thousands of jobs.

About 185,000 job cuts have been announced so far this year, according to company reports. Nearly 2.6 million jobs were lost over 2008, the highest yearly job-loss total since 1945.

"It's all about the consumer, and the consumer's been hit hard," said Robert Brusca, chief economist at Fact and Opinion Economics. "It's a vicious circle as weakness begets layoffs, which beget more spending weakness."

Construction machinery manufacturer Caterpillar (CAT, Fortune 500) said Monday it will cut 20,000 jobs amid a "very challenging global business environment." The company had already planned to cut 15,000 workers since the fourth quarter of 2008, but added another 5,000, bringing the total to 20,000.

Sprint Nextel Corp. (S, Fortune 500) will cut a total of about 8,000 jobs by March 31, the company said in a release. The telecommunications company's plan is to reduce internal and external labor costs by about $1.2 billion on an annual basis.

Home Depot (HD, Fortune 500), the world's largest home improvement retailer, announced Monday it will eliminate its EXPO design center business and cut 7,000 associates, or approximately 2% of the company's total workforce. The company blamed a lack of demand for big ticket design and decor projects.

Dutch financial group ING said Monday it will take a 2008 loss of $1.3 billion and cut 7,000 jobs. The company could not comment on where the cuts would take place. ING employs around 130,000 people across 50 countries.

Pfizer (PFE, Fortune 500) said in an earnings report it would cut 10% of its staff of 81,900 and close five of its manufacturing plants. The drugmaker recently announced that it was cutting up to 8% of its research staff, or up to 800 jobs. The company already cut 4,700 jobs in 2008.

Deere& Co. (DE, Fortune 500) , the world's top farm-equipment maker, said it would cut nearly 700 jobs between factories in Brazil and Iowa.

The job cuts across sectors didn't surprise Brusca, as nearly all are weak, he said.

"The services sector is shedding jobs at a horrific pace, because that's where most of the jobs are," Brusca said. "When the consumer is in tough shape it's hard for business to do well, because it all depends on consumption or investments."

Continuing the scary trend
The cuts mark a horrific start to the week, and a brutal start to 2009. In the previous week, around 40,000 cuts were announced across multiple industries.

Wednesday, in particular, was littered with a slew of job cuts: BHP Billiton, Clear Channel Communications, Intel, Rohm and Haas Co., UAL Corp. and Williams-Sonoma all announced job cuts totaling over 27,000 positions.

Schlumberger said Friday that it will cut 5,000 jobs worldwide, with 1,000 of the cuts taking place in North America.

Also last week, Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. Entertainment said it would cut about 800 jobs, or 10% of its worldwide staff in the upcoming weeks, while Microsoft unveiled its plan to cut up to 5,000 jobs - 5.5% of its global workforce.

Outlook: A recovery in sight?
Brusca said he agreed with many economists' predictions that the recession will end after the second quarter of 2009. Americans might feel the job market start to bounce back a bit sooner than expected, he said.

"These recessions are like geometry," Brusca said. "It looks like we'll have a V-shaped cycle, in that we're going into this with very sharp losses. This intense-phase recession will probably recover fairly quickly, with the job market coming out it at the same angle it came in."

In the short term, the economy and the job market are in trouble, Brusca said. But "it doesn't look like the bottom is falling out of the economy," he said.

And there's a silver lining to the gloomy clouds over America's economy.

"The good news is it's so bad right now that we will have a definite, noticeable recovery when it comes," Brusca said. "We're getting a lot of adjustment out of the way early."

If you can, get a job with the government or an industry that sub-contracts through state and local agencies. Their budgets are subject to cuts too, but it's safer than the private sector.

"CLEVELAND, N.C. -- A company in Rowan County that employs mostly drivers and shop workers has given notice to the state of North Carolina that it plans to lay off up to 150 workers.

Auto Truck Transport in Cleveland notified the state Commerce Department last week of the pending layoffs. The Salisbury Post reported Wednesday that the company specializes in transporting trucks across the country from plants such as Freightliner, International, Ford, Sterling and Mack.

The layoffs at Auto Truck Transport follow news earlier this month that Freightliner would lay off 2,137 workers at three North Carolina plants.

An employers' directory from the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce says Auto Truck Transport has about 275 employees."

There's an advertising agency in Raleigh laying off 15 out of 40 people today, and filing bankruptcy. Not a big number in the whole scheme of thing, but my best friend's husband might be one of them. They don't know yet.

I think it's RBW, but I might be wrong about that. It's not just an advertising agency, and their main client was BB&T, and they got dropped last week. All of the lower level employees were cut, so just supervisors and managers stayed.

Roughly 150,000 IBM employees in the US. 380,000 total worldwide. (And yes, this is public information, read the IBM Annual Reports and other publications). By the numbers:
5% US layoff = 7500 workers
4% US layoff = 6000 workers
3% US layoff = 4500 workers
2% US layoff = 3000 workers

As a percentage, the layoffs aren't as bad as some other companies. However, that doesn't change the fact I will no longer see certain faces anymore. (David0603 I will continue to see, much to my own demise )

"Budget cuts force Bronx Zoo to 'fire' animals

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Layoffs for sea lions? Furloughs for frogs? Is there no job security, anywhere?

The recession may be coming to a zoo near you. State budget cuts mean many zoos, aquariums and botanical gardens will lose crucial state funding for their exhibits. New York's 76 zoos, aquariums and botanical gardens will lose $9.1 million in state funds next year.

"We're faced with this very difficult problem of firing the animals, as it were," said Steve Sanderson, the CEO of the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the Bronx Zoo and the New York Aquarium. They will lose $3 million to budget cuts."

i guess this may go more in the stock market thread, but i find it really interesting

http://blogs.wsj.com/deals/2009/02/03/dow-chemical-rohm-haas-is-worth-more-than-we-are/?mod=yahoo_hs

basically, deal was brokered 7 months ago, now the purchasing company is worth less than the company to be purchased, forcing the deal to go through my destroy both (dow fears)

while working for a competitor, this has been on the rumor mill for quite some time

doesn't help that dow posted a 1.55b loss in q4, thrashing their yearly profits to a really small margin.
