went and saw it tonight, thought it was awesome. depressing, but within the realm of reality (ie nothing seemed over the top or far fetched in the least) and just awesome.

i posted this in the Milk thread (due to where the convo had lead) but it will probably get more response here...

in response to everyone saying he was robbed for the Oscar last night...

i havent seen the wrestler yet, but all of his struggles aside was his performance really that inspiring? I mean, had he not the reputation he has would this role still have gained as much hype as it did? or is the mickey rourke comeback the new bandwagon to jump on?

^^dude

the scenes working the deli line

every time he takes his hearing aid out

the scenes where he's treated like a king contrasted with the scenes where he's getting his chops busted by the average people

the last scene with his daughter

the last strip club scenes

you're not topping that in a biopic

i'm sorry, its just not happening

the movie just seemed like it was made for him, which is why he was able to be so good in it

I don't expect him to go on Broadway now and dazzle anybody with his newfound acting ability

I was not able to watch the awards last night but DVR'd it just because I wanted to see Mickey Rourke's acceptance speech

besides maybe some of DDL's performances it was was my favorite of all time

the centerpiece scene he had in the film moved the person I was with to tears because he reminded her of her father in so many ways

basically like everyone says it didn't even seem like he was acting

So I google the Penn/Rourke thing today to see what people are saying about Penn getting the award and I find some stuff about how before the oscars Rourke is talking down Penn and his acting in Milk in some pretty derogatory ways, which possibly turned some Oscar voters against him when it came time to vote.

How perfect would it be if that's what caused him to lose?

In the film he ends up killing himself because he just can't start a new life since he's just too addicted to the pain in the life he's created, and in real life he can't find ultimate redemption by winning on oscar because he can't stop the asshole douchbag from his past.

I dont know about that but I do know that Penn closed with "Mickey Rourke is rising again and he is my brother" so maybe it was just polite, but didnt seem like that would fit what you just said

I thought it was great and Rourke's performance was phenomenal. I haven't seen Milk so I can't really comment on Sean Penn's performance. I thought Rourke did a fantastic job at getting the audience to sympathize with his character and situation. While far from being the classic "good guy" everyone wants to root for, he became a likeable person that you couldn't help but root for despite his short comings. And in many ways, Rourke's life has taken the same beatings, which is why I think he was able to bring so much to the role.

"After his December 23 appearance on David Letterman, Rourke told someone backstage that he was surprised that so many people seemed to think that Penn was his Oscar competition since “I’m not even sure he’ll get a nomination.”

On December 28, a Los Angeles entertainment honcho shared a text message with me that Rourke had sent him: “Look seans an old friend of mine and i didnt buy his performance at all—thought he did an average pretend acting like he was gay besides hes one of the most homophobic people i kno" [sic]"

http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2008-12-29/rourke-trashes-penn/

I'm not saying that's what happened, I'm just throwing out hypotheticals.

Also, it's pretty damn easy to be the bigger man after you've just won something.

Quote :
"At one time, before Brandon Routh put on his best Superman, Nicholas Cage was looking to don the tights. While it may seem weird, there was just something about it that appealed to me. Now, while he isn't getting to be a world-famous superhero, Cage will be throwing on a pair of tights, or some other form of spandex. The Hollywood Reporter has posted that the actor is in talks to star in an upcoming indie drama called The Wrestler, which will come to us from Darren Aronofsky's Protozoa Pictures.

It's not some sporty tale of school wrestlers and their coach, but rather, and wonderfully, the world of pro wrestling. Cage will, hopefully, star as "a 1980s-era star pro wrestler who has become a burnt-out shell of his former self. After he has a heart attack during a small-time match, a doctor tells him he could die if he fights again." So, in the attempts to start a new life, he gets a job at a much-less-exciting deli, and gets sweet on an aging stripper and her son. "But the prospect of a rematch with his old nemesis the Ayatollah proves too tempting to resist, even if it means risking his life.""

can you imagine how different this movie would have been.......

was it really for nic cage?

Quote :
"The Wrestler was scripted by former The Onion writer Robert D. Siegel and entered development at director Darren Aronofsky's Protozoa Pictures. Actor Nicolas Cage entered negotiations in October 2007 to star in the film's lead role as Randy "Ram" Robinson, a former wrestler.[8] The following month, Cage left the project after attending a Ring of Honor show in New York City, and Mickey Rourke replaced the actor in the lead role. According to Aronofsky, Cage pulled out of the movie because Aronofsky wanted Rourke as the lead character. Aronofsky stated that Cage was "a complete gentleman, and he understood that my heart was with Mickey and he stepped aside. I have so much respect for Nic Cage as an actor and I think it really could have worked with Nic but, you know, Nic was incredibly supportive of Mickey and he is old friends with Mickey and really wanted to help with this opportunity, so he pulled himself out of the race.""

and the nic cage vs mickey rourke, studio dollars vs artistic integrity debate thing is one that needs to be continued, later

right now, though, we need to talk about how rourke got jobbed last night

Anyone think there's a chance his acceptance speech the night before lost it for him? I really hope the judges wouldn't do something that shitty, but when I was watching his speech I couldn't help but think, "this is hilarious, but can't be good for him"

^^ The voting takes place well before the awards, so the ISA speech had nothing to do with it.

Still, Milk was good and Penn was good but The Wrestler and Rourke were better.

The Academy loves Biopics. The Academy also loves the state of California, so Sean Penn wins. Hollywood loves a comeback story but not the Academy. I hate Sean Penn so I was not happy that he won.

My sentiments exactly

As for this Oscars business, we all know who won. Those uptight hollywood crones just dont have it in them to appreciate the job Mickey did for this film like the average joe does. They'd rather hoist subpar baloney that Penn's producing and has been producing since the 80's.

also on tangent from page 2

Surely you haven't seen Men of Honor. Come on, he went stride for stride with De Niro.

alls i know is

I haven't seen the Visitor.
but Richard Jenkins is AWESOME.

and he finally gets to star in a movie

and he's up against the pretty boy crew: Brad Pitt, Sean Penn
Some dude in a Ron Howard movie playing a dead President
and the super comeback, role-of-a-lifetime story of the last few years in Hollywood

he was probably just like
"fuck"

Oh, I went to a Ring of Honor a couple of weeks ago and saw Necrobutcher fight. He lost, the other guy did a Ram Jam and missed, it was awesome. The crowd was all "WHERE'S THE STAPLEGUN?" "GIVE HIM THE HEART ATTACK".

I know I will probably regret saying this here... but my e-go doesn't matter.

Having watched both The Wrestler and Milk I think the Oscar went to the right person. They were both nominated which means a lot. To say you had one of the best performances of the year can make anyone proud.

I think they were both stellar, but I felt like Rourke's character was a lot like him... It wasn't a huge stretch for him. Everyone has already said it, "it's like the role was made for him" well, then it shouldn't have been too hard for him to portray. Not taking anything away from his acting, just saying it's almost like he played himself.

Yes, this opens up an easy joke, if you are a Sean Penn hater... you can say he's gay. Good one.

But seriously, if you watch Sean Penn in other movies or interviews and see his performance, especially if you look at footage of Harvey Milk and how on point he is, I think they made the right decision.

I think they both did a fantastic job, but I think Penn had the more difficult role.

Which again, leads into the conversation in the other thread about biopic actors winning oscars. If you can directly compare their job of acting with the mannerisms of a real person you can say, "oh, they really did a good job of playing that person." There is not such comparison to make with a fictional character.

rented it last night. I really like how it explored aging, and trying to stay in a subculture when everyone else you got in with has essentially gotten out.

and I had no idea that Marisa Tomei is 45...

I saw it tonight. I thought it was a good film that didn't sugarcoat anything. I felt so bad for him when he realized he didn't make it to meet up with his daughter and he knew it cost his chance at making amends with her. On one hand you think to yourself hey he shouldn't have gone out the night before, but then you have to remember how messed up his head must be at this point in his life. I am thankful that I have a good relationship with my parents. I definitely couldn't just shut them out of my life no matter how how bad they let me down. The beauty in the movie is how you want to pull for the guy, but know that he's cursed and will have a tragic end.
