^^ yea I put $500 away in my savings per month that is basically like a bill. its auto transfered to the account. Id love to bump that up to $750-1000 but that will probably have to wait until I get married and start to split some things up

"maybe you should reasearch a company and take a stable job"

once again, the smugness of people who think they have made the "right decisions" and everyone else has made the "wrong decisions" is astounding.

Congratulations for yourself and your company. I hope it glides through this mess and you keep your job for as long as you need it. That will only help the overall economy and the rest of us.

But when your CEO is indicted for insider trading or your foreign competition gets bailed out by their own governments, don't come whining here because you didn't do enough research into your company.

i dont see anyone turning down a paying job if it is their only offer because they dont "feel the company can make it through an economic crisis"

now if you have multiple offers you can compare the companies and make the best choice but not everyone has 100 jobs to choose from

the only thing most people are worried ab with a job is a) do i have to move and b) how much do i make

considering i personally know the ceo and only 5% of our stock is public and we own our entire supply chain to the finished product and we have no outstanding debt, market conditions only slightly afect us since it is a commodity product

That's $26k/year...you can exceed that by a WIIIIDE margin and not live a high class lifestyle.

Buy yeah, you can live comfortably but frugally on that.

wow.... way to completely miss my point.

on the other hand, maybe we should all work at companies where we know the CEO, have a completely vertical supply chain, and sell basic commodities. Hey, I'm sure the entire economy would be better if that's the only kind of companies that existed!

Here is my monthly budget:

$515 Mortgage
$300 Utilities
$270 Sons Private School
$125 Phone/Net/DISH
$15 Cellphone
$55 Insurance

$1280 Total Expense

So about $1280/month is my total cost of living, before food, gas, and other expenses. Of course if I was out of work I would not be driving nearly as much, and just eat in. I think I could probably cruise with no problem on $500/week.

exactly.

i don't know that its worth the text...if he is going to argue with people about this and then post that kind of information about his job, it is clear that our counter arguments are going over his head.

Apparently before taking a job you should:
-know the CEO personally
-research the company enough that you can guarantee the job will be stable during any unforeseen economic turndowns no matter what
-make sure its a job dealing with a commodity product that will not be affected by market conditions

on top of that he is stating that, if you dont have this kind of job, it is simply because you are lazy.

....

and so am I, I've never lost a position either. But I didn't come parading in here like I was some elite untouchable and everyone who has lost a job was lazy or a loser. youre no older than I am, there are plenty of people on this site who have been in the real working world longer than either of us, I dont think you have any right to brag about how long youve been employed or not getting laid off with all but a few years experience of real work.

Hmmm, the place I worked closed the week before Thanksgiving and I had less than twenty four hours notice.

Should I have gotten paid for another two months after that according to this NC WARN Act?

I think NC WARN is related to mass layoffs, if you were just fat that was trimmed in a small company, I wouldn't expect you to be eligible.

Quote :
"(4) Under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN Act), employers with 100 or more employees are required to provide workers with sixty-day advance notice before ordering a plant closing or mass layoff'. "

Here ya go

Ah, okay. The place I worked closed for good, and employed maybe 30 people max. So if there were 70 more employees, I could have gotten compensated.

that's what, maybe an 85k mortgage (unless that 515 includes 1/12th of your prop tax as well that you are putting into escrow as well, in which case its even less)

Well then i guess you had a good rate and 35k down. Once again, even more if you include your HOA/prop tax in that 780 a month

I was laid off Oct 2006, was and started my 2nd "real" job 6 weeks later.

A few months ago, the writing was on the wall (this time I knew what it looked like ) and started looking around. The day of a large (20%+ of Engineering) layoff (I wasn't laid off) I got a call about the position I'm currently at, and 2 weeks later I submitted my letter of resignation. Two weeks after that, I started where I'm at now.

And 2k a month in bills isn't that much. Don't forget the IRS and NC Dept of Revenue, it may come directly out of your paycheck, but that's still a bill. (Or, I guess some could argue patriotic duty

That sums up how I've felt for a while now. Trying to support a wife and kid, plus mortgage and health insurance on unemployment payments is a joke. Here are a couple of things that helped me out:

I found some good encouragement and tips by attending this: http://www.colonial.org/jobseekers/

There's a free - if you're unemployed - resume class done by Wake Tech. I'm taking it now and its VERY helpful. For info, email Pat at: pstaylor@waketech.edu

Thanks. I may look into the colonial jobseekers thing.
I'm pretty happy with the way my resume is now. I've asked some people on Monster and they think it looks fine.

Shit, some of you guys are pussies. I've been out of work since I graduated in May. May of 2007.

Well, I was very briefly a bartender, but for the overwhelming majority of that time I've been living off odd jobs and writing papers for people who go to other schools, which is surprisingly lucrative and easy. Also, it permits me to undermine a flawed and incompetent academic system and get paid for doing it.

I hate temp agencies but they have gotten me through in the past. I'm thankful to them for that.
Recently, I talked with Greene Resources in Raleigh about a long term temp job at RTI. It's mainly entering info from College Transcripts. I was fired from last job. I had told them I was let go due to performance issues and that was all I knew. That have decided to get an interview for me because of the reasons I was fired. I told the recruiter I could do that job. My test scores were fine. But they were concerned of what I might say about my last job. I'm not going to say anything bad. I was pissed but I'm going to see if they can get anything else for me. I'm trying to get a letter of recommendation from my last employer to get to them.
I had an interview with ZC Sterling recently I'm waiting to hear back on.
I got another temp job I'm waiting to interview for possibly the first week in January. It's for Schering Plough in RTP.

fired for performance issues? That would be an auto disqualifier for me.....with so many people looking for jobs who wants to take a chance on someone that got fired because of performance?

Remember, you are not officially unemployed unless (1) you do not have a job, (2) you have actively looked for work in the prior four weeks, and (3) you are currently available for work.

Just FYI.

doesn't really matter what the governmental definition is. For all intents and purposes, if you had a job, and now you don't, then you're unemployed
