OK I'm in , well registered but not confirmed... March 2nd +3rd, Monday/Tuesday event. Anybody know their non driving participant policy? I'll have to ask if nobody knows...

Policy is; it's better to ask for forgiveness than for permission...
Otherwise I'm sure its no more than $20 for the day, if you can't finagle a free wristband.
There's the kart track too for non-drivers. IIRC this falls on the week of spring break.

Update:

All chassis bracing is in, most underbody panels are now in place. Brand new factory exhaust installed... Just have a headlight connector, and very small loose ends left, almost there. Also upgraded to GT3 brake ducts and a few other goodies. Track day coming up woot. It's really starting to drive pretty well.

I'm an alignment and a set of tires (already acquired, awaiting mounting) away from my next track event, March 2-3, I CAN'T wait!!!

In other news, today I was sandwiched between a 997 tt and a 997 GT2 on I95 just north of NYC.

I've seen two in the past, but hey I hang around these POS' all the time.

The dude in the GT2 drove around my car for a while, I didn't have much chance to check out his car, I was trying to talk on the phone and figure out my route at the same time (and I left my earpiece @the hotel last night, so my hands were full, also illegal in NY). I have a trackschedule.com, VIR and a PCA sticker on the car, I'm wondering if that's what caught his attention. My car's also lowered/exhaust, but I mean he was in a 997 GT2, so unless he does track events, I don't see why he'd be interested in a mostly normal looking 996. Anyway, shortly after he got off the freeway the dude in the 997 tt downshifted and got up to maybe 120mph, then finally spotted the cop that was about to get off the highway. Cop got back on the highway, followed him for a little while then got off, the tt got off on the next exit. I couldn't believe he didn't get pulled over...

For reference:

He was next to me for a couple of minutes, at first I thought it was a 996 GT2 from the rear wing. I got a better look once I got off the phone. The 997 tt (both cars were silver) was in front of me at the time. Kind of cool the 3 of us drove together for a few mins. Just before that when I was waiting at the George Washington bridge I was next to three silver Camrys (current body style), I was thinking about how common those things were. Ironic that 3 911s were lined up after that...

Not only that, but the Boxster and 911 have had different bumpers/lights, etc. since 2002.

I like most 911 variants, some mid 70s w/U.S. bumpers notwithstanding. From some angles (and the drivers seat) the front fenders are rather sexy. The wide rear hips are nice to notice from some angles -particularly from the rear- also.

Back in Raleigh, and after an entire ordeal to get the roof rack (Porsche shipped me a "new" rack, in box, missing the attachment feet, locks, etc.), I finally got to transport my bike to the trail w/out relying on other people since selling the WRX.

People do seem to think it looks... something, as I get a lot of people checking it out, commenting on it, etc. It's my only car, so I didn't have much of a choice. I did see an M3 sedan at the trailhead today w/a bike rack, made me :'(

Ahmet, I was eating over at the Ted's Montana Grill over at Southpoint and saw 2 911's, made me think of this thread. One of them was newer (looked pretty close to yours actually) and I didn't look at it much, but the other one was a beautiful 1980's 911, with the "whale tail" spoiler and all. I'm not much of a Porsche fan in general, but something about the styling of 1980's Porsche's has always attracted me.

This thread plus random sightings might make me a Porsche fan yet, we'll see I've never even ridden in a 911, although I really enjoyed driving my friend's 944 a few years back.

statepkt, most cars come with mounting points as far as I know. I know that the Corvette does not, that was one of my major turn offs when considering that car.

Doubledown, you're joking right? That's my car...

Jek, I was not a fan of the 911 at all for quite some time. I can't say enough positive things about it. If you're really into driving, and can afford everything that comes along w/the car, it really is the llama's ass. Are you around Raleigh? I'd be happy to scare you in mine. BTW, a few of my good friends have 911s we often end up at the same places, but I don't know anybody w/a street legal 911 other than a 996 chassis car.

OK, one more comparison to an M3, the 911's steering rocks the house. Shifter is great, brakes are ridiculously good. M3 has much nicer mid range torque, and that applies to almost any M3 vs. 911 from similar eras, save for the e30.

I'm already having to put another set of tires on this car, in 5k miles...

So, got the alignment under control as well. I can't believe how far the car's come. The only sad thing is the rain/snow forecasted for our track event :'( I'm still not super comfortable w/the 911, particularly when it's sideways.

Anyway, I actually had to jump through a lot of hoops to get some old school Thule bike carriers to work on the Porsche roof rack, which is ONLY available through Porsche. -I don't like the factory bike carrier pictured, as it says Porsche all over it, in freaking red letters.

Anyway, here's a comparison:

Obviously both racks are manufactured by Thule, but apparently the Porsche bike carriers (and the old school ones I found) are made in Sweeden, but the VW/Audi rack adapters I had to source, to get the Thule branded ones to work are produced in the U.S. -Neither is officially sold through Thule, so some digging through internal parts catalogues was required.

It may have all been in vein, as I might switch to the newest style Porsche racks as they place the bike lower, they're also more aerodynamic and make less noise at higher speeds. However it still says Porsche on them, so I may have to dig through catalogs again. It's not as obnoxious, so it's a tough call. I have so much money in bike carriers/roof rack on this car, I could've just bought another car that the bikes will fit into!

There's also the fork style, which mounts the bike more securely, but involves taking the front wheel off. That's another dilemma, particularly with disc brakes on the bike.

i much prefer fork mount bike racks. much more secure which is important when on a porsche...

and you can get a little fork add on to hold the front wheel on the rack if you don't want to put it inside the car.

Honestly, the bikes are held in very securely, so I don't really mind the frame mount, particularly because I can just toss the bike on top w/out any more work. The roof carrier is rated for well over 200lbs, and there's no play anywhere in the mounting system. I've also driven very hard and well into triple digit speeds with two bikes on top, no problems so far.

I can't say this w/out sounding like a douchebag, but I mean it in the purest sense;

I hate driving any other car. I mean, there was a period of time when I had the M3 and the WRX in addition to the 911, and I didn't touch the other cars for two weeks. I took the WRX out in the snow for a bit to play, but even then I came back and drove the 911...

I am putting seats/roll bar/harnesses in it this week, it'll really start being a challenge then. I looked at a pick up truck today, but just couldn't bring myself to it.

That looks like an Elise, so I don't think so...

I really like the mount, if I thought of something like that, I would've considered a Corvette a tad more seriously. I still do want one of those to play with at some point. Oh, and about my earlier comment, I drove a Volvo for several hundred miles yesterday, and it's not so bad purely from a "sit in the car till you arrive" perspective. I think as long as it's sufficiently "solid", and different enough from a sports car, maybe I could do a second car after all. I wouldn't mind something that can go off road, but I don't know of anything I like that's cheap enough... The 911 is EATING me alive. Chain tensioner assy. is ~$1k from the dealer. 11 hours of labor to put in. Good times.

It's got a remanufactured motor, with a lot of 997 parts in it, maybe 20k miles on motor/fresh transaxle too. I don't think it's likely to be any more of a "money pit" than another example, probably less so. The problem with this car is me, I keep wanting to do things to it that cost a lot of money. Like the seats I just put in it, something Sparco would've been fine, but no I had to go get GT3 RS seats, with factory Recaro sliders, and all the other junk, with a factory roll bar and all that. I'm very happy, but it's a black hole for my bank account.

Going to Roebling Road with it this weekend. In 2 more weeks I'll do a time trial with it. I'll update this thread.

and

I don't know. I'm not happy. I need help. I was fast on track, but can't say that I had fun. Needs tires, they're expensive, almost $2k for a set. Obviously I knew this going in, but the tires make SUCH a big difference.

And, the car wasn't as much of a challenge to drive as I would've thought from driving it on the street. It was kind of benign actually. I want something a bit more hardcore I think, what that could possibly be, I'm not really sure. Part of my brain pushes for a 911 twin turbo converted to RWD, another pushes for a z06. Oh my.
