Y'all are missing the point. It's not about the amount or type of fans a school has.

It's their academics. You wanna cheer for the tech school. Land-grants are desirable.

If Clemson has more fans than USC and "resembles" UNC for that, it doesn't matter. Clemson is our brother as a land-grant university.

Clemson is a land-grant school. USC is not. Virginia Tech is a land-grant school. UVA is not. Auburn is a land-grant school. Bama is not. Georgia Tech is not a land-grant...UGA is...but the tech makes it a toss-up.

When in doubt, root for the land-grant, folks.

It's not that hard.

^There's history in everything we do. Let's look at "start your tractors!"

Quote :
"Finally, and most creatively, the Panthers’ students played to that aforementioned redneck stereotype as they beckoned WVU fans to the exits with a chant of “Start your tractors.”"

http://www.da.wvu.edu/show_article.php?story_id=41723

Pittsburgh students chant "start your tractors" at a game against WVU. Guess which school is a land-grant and which one is not...

Quote :
"It means we lost to those evil, arrogant pricks down the river (loved the sign that said "Start Your Tractors." Don't ever forget that you live in Kansas, too, and to 99.9 percent of the nation, that means you're a bunch of hayseeds, too). "

http://www.bringonthecats.com/2009/1/14/724341/postgame-reaction-ku

KU students chant "start your tractors" at a game against Kansas State. Guess which school is a land-grant...

Quote :
"“Start your tractors. Start your tractors,” chanted several thousand people painted blue and white, wearing wigs, and stacked one layer in front of the other like dill pickles in a glass jar."

http://www.roanoke.com/columnists/hart/wb/17826

Duke students chant "start your tractors" at a game against Virginia Tech. Guess which school is a land-grant...

Quote :
"n north carolina, N.C. state is usually portrayed as the "redneck school," mainly because of the strong agriculture program, and people generally aren't impressed that you go there unless you're an engineering major. i'm kind of ashamed to say this, but at carolina/state games we usually cheer something along the lines of "if you can't go to college, go to state" or "start your tractors"..you get the point."

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-life/649498-pitt-vs-nc-state.html

Here's a Chapel Hill student advising someone to go to Pitt, not NC State...because NC State isn't a very good school. The fact that they chant "start your tractors" at us during games is what she uses as evidence of how much we suck. So...guess which one is a land-grant institution...?

This rivalry, our rivalry, NCSU vs. UNC, is taking place everywhere...the schools just have different names. You gotta pick a side.

Here's an interesting blog about the kind of rivalry I'm discussing. The author writes in his "Why I'll be cheering for three Southern land grant schools, and so should you" post about why he's cheering for Mississippi State, Clemson, and Auburn. Here's one of the quotes he uses to explain:

Quote :
"A football game between Ole Miss and Mississippi State [is] more than just a football game — but then that was thought to be true of many Ole Miss football games. . . . "It's kind of like the situation in the Middle East," [says Ole Miss's dean of students]. "Fans of one grow up hating the other and really don't know why." The twist to the Mississippi State rivalry was that the fans knew exactly why they hated each other. The game served as a proxy for the hoary Mississippi class struggle, between the white folks who wore shirts with collars on them and the white folks who did not. The desperate contempt Ole Miss football fans felt for Mississippi State was echoed in the feelings of fans of the University of Texas for Texas A&M and fans of the University of Oklahoma for Oklahoma State — formerly known as Oklahoma A&M. These schools were not rivals; they were subordinates..."

http://money-law.blogspot.com/2007/12/why-ill-be-cheering-for-three-southern.html

First comment to the blog:

Quote :
"Jim: Aren't you saying in a way. "red necks rule?""

Which is a typical response, the kind of thing we State fans here all the time from the fans of UNC.

Here are some words about Clemson, the school that started this discussion:

Quote :
"I'm not one to trash on a school, but DAMN...Clemson SUCKS. They accepted me before I ever applied (as if I was going to apply in the first place) Georgia Tech even has a school song entitled "Clemson is a redneck school" That has to tell you something. Good Lord this school blows goats."

Quote :
"As a student of clemson I cant say enough bad things about it. It is full of 5th generation rednecks that forget they lost the civil war. It alsmost seems as though everyone that is a local is brainwashed, i feel sorry that everyone is so narrow minded. Dont get me started on boat shoes, camo and the North Face. Im considering dropping out and creating a store on campus that specializes in those three items. If this school ever wants to be a nationally recognized school it needs to start accepting more out of state students to raise test scores and lower ignorance."

Quote :
"As a supporter of their in-state competitors (the University of South Carolina), my opinion is somewhat biased. I will say that Clemson has a beautiful campus, a very loyal student & alumni population, and a fantastic game-day atmosphere for football Saturdays. Plus, the science, engineering and architecture programs are very good for the price you pay. For business and liberal arts, however, you would be better-served looking down the road at either USC or UGA."

http://www.rateitall.com/i-18439-clemson-university.aspx

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

Really, how can we not relate to Clemson?

Plus, the science, engineering and architecture programs are very good for the price you pay. For business and liberal arts, however, you would be better-served looking down the road at either USC or UGA UNC.

I italicized "for the price you pay" because that always gets emphasized. We don't get to be a good a school. We're always an economical choice. Because we're poor rednecks, and poor rednecks can't afford, or truly appreciate, a fine education like they offer over at UNC-CH! Nevermind that Chapel Hill is slightly cheaper than NCSU. But don't tell that to a Chapel Hill grad because then they'll have to explain how high the cost of living in Chapel Hill is and how it's not really that cheap after all...the snobby, delusional University of the People.

I'm disappointed you dismissed my earnest efforts.

Anyway, what is the argument that Clemson is like Chapel Hill? A lot of people that didn't go there supposedly root for them, and you can find Clemson gear in Walmarts?

Here's a ranking of universities by merchandising sales from 2006:

http://tinyurl.com/qoca3

USC is 20th. Clemson is 24th. Since they don't have much in terms of professional sports or other public schools (College of Charleston and SCSU), it's not surprising they are both ranked so high. Still, USC beat Clemson. Alabama beat Auburn. Kansas beat Kansas State. Texas beat Texas Tech. Ole Miss beat Mississippi State. Alabama beat Auburn. Virginia beat Virginia Tech. And UNC-CH beat us.

This is all sort of falls in line with what I've been saying.

Mississippi State, Virginia Tech, and NC State didn't actually make the list. But I know State's gonna be back. It's hard to make the list when you got fucking Duke sitting at 23rd and all the newcomers we got who don't care about college sports and we have a lot more schools in general than most states. Still, I think our rivalry is similar to what you find in other states, particularly throughout the South. And I think, of Clemson and USC, Clemson would clearly be the NC State of the NCSU-UNC rivalry. Clemson and USC being in different conferences makes things weird, but whatever, I stand by my assertion.

And there are going to be more Walmart fans in general throughout the deep South. They have less professional teams, less universities, and less college graduates in general. Using y'all's logic, you could compare every big school down there to Chapel Hill because they have so many Walmart fans. But you can't really blame them...they wanna cheer for a team, right? And they don't have many options.

We got the Canes, Bobcats, Panthers, and public universities including East Carolina University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

South Carolina has Clemson University, College of Charleston, South Carolina State University, and the University of South Carolina. And a piece of the Panthers?

UNC students can go off and chant "start your tractors" to me. I don't care. I've never owned a tractor, let alone a riding lawnmower, in my life. I come from a poor, predominantly black neighborhood in Charlotte (even though you would never know it by the way I act and dress). I'd probably ask one of them "so where are you from if you think I'm a redneck just b/c I went to State" and they'd probably respond with something like "I'm from Gastonia/Kinston/Rocky Mount" and I'll say "that's what I thought, so why don't you fuck off and go back to your piece of shit town". (I guess many of you by now know that I hate Gastonia and its Wal-Mart UNC fan rednecks with a passion; it's a shame my brother has to live there ) I double majored in microbiology and biochemistry, and minored in genetics. If they want to wave their "prestigious" B.A. in Art History degree in front of me I'll gladly grab it and wipe my ass with it.

Based on their wikis, South Carolina has more national championships than Clemson--team championships and individual championships. South Carolina has 6 team championships. Clemson has 4.

UNC-CH has over 34 team championships. You take out women's soccer, they have 14. State has 8.

I mean, seriously, you don't really have any evidence that "Clemson owns South Carolina in everything." South Carolina has more national championships than you. UNC-CH has more national championships than us.

They have more merchandise sales than you. UNC-CH has more merchandise sales than us.

When you add in my points about academics, I think it's pretty fucking clear who is who in our respective rivalries.

Also, I'm glad to see you now agree with everybody else. Before, this is what you had to say:

Quote :
"kevmcd86: clemson & ncstate not only share extremely similar academics, but also the same athletic frustrations. it seems like everytime ncstate blows a game, clemson will follow suit (and visa versa). i do not know why, its just been that way for years now."

at least clemson's ncaa championships are 2 soccer, 1 golf, 1 football as opposed to 5 for riding a horse and 1 track and field.

On top of that, Clemson leads 65-37-4 in football (16-3-1 over the last 20 years too) 163-118 in baseball, and women's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer are all Clemson

SC leads in men's basketball 86-73, swimming&diving, volleyball

Given that data from a neutral point of view leads me to think Clemson has a better sports program...unless you are going purely on national championships - 5 of which are for horse riding...something Clemson and a LOT of other schools dont even have.

yes, there is no comparison between Clemson and South Carolina athletics.
but since we want to go on and on, i'll be happy to post the history of South Carolina football and blow up the thread with the mind boggling futility of their program.

An excerpt of their football history, written a few years ago

Quote :
"Following the 2003 season South Carolina has an all-time winning percentage under .500 (494-502-44), which ranks 88th all-time in D-1A football...only 29 programs have been worse. A few of the notable football programs who have been better than the Gamecocks include such powerhouses as: Duke, Western Michigan, Toledo, Navy, UAB, Central Florida, Ball St., North Texas, Nevada, East Carolina, Houston, Northern Illinois, Utah St., San Jose St., Vanderbilt, Akron, Baylor, UNLV, Kansas, and Rutgers just to name a few. This is Carolina Gamecock football.
In the 59 seasons Carolina has been affiliated with a conference, they have won that conference once...the ACC in 1969, with a 7-4 record. Since the Associated Press began ranking football teams in 1936, the Cocks have finished in the Top 20 of the rankings only five times in the 67 years. Carolina has never finished in the Top 10 of a major recognized poll...NEVER. The first year of Gamecock football was in 1892, Carolina won its first bowl game 103 years later under BRAD SCOTT. In 109 seasons of football, Carolina has yet to participate in one of the “Big 5” Bowls (Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Cotton). Guess what? As Carolina is set to begin its 110th season of collegiate football, they have won 10 or more games in a single season once. In 110 seasons, Carolina has won more games than it lost only 50 times. In 110 seasons, Carolina has won 6 or more games in a season 33 times, and lost 6 or more 35 times. This is Carolina Gamecock football.

South Carolina has had 32 different head coaches in its storied tradition...only five of them stayed longer than 5 seasons, 21 of them have losing records. Add to that the winning tradition the Cocks have enjoyed at home in Williams-Brice Stadium. Carolina is 18-36-1 at home in conference since joining the SEC. Lou Holtz is the devil. It’s another Carolina Touchdown!?…not quite. Of the 56 programs, which have played more than 1000 games all-time, only four have scored fewer points than South Carolina in their schools history.

Since joining the SEC in 1992, Carolina has had a winning record in the conference twice. In the eleven seasons as a member of the SEC, Carolina boasts a conference record of 33-62-1…only two teams have been worse: Kentucky has 26 wins, Vanderbilt 11. Although Carolina has yet to finish in the top two of the Eastern division, they have finished last twice. Carolina has yet to win six conference games in a season, something only Kentucky and Vanderbilt have done in the last 11 seasons. And no one should forget the fact that Carolina went two consecutive seasons without winning one conference game, not one. Carolina had an impressive string of 21 consecutive games with a loss snapped in 2000 by beating New Mexico State (then let the rest of the country know what Carolina football was all about by tearing down the goal-posts). Since 1992, only three times has any non-probation member of the conference failed to win two or more games overall in a season…South Carolina has accomplished this feat twice, Kentucky once. Since 1992, only once has a conference member failed to win a game overall in a single season…you guessed it, South Carolina.
South Carolina’s all-time record versus other current conference members is even more impressive: 2-9 vs Alabama, 4-8 vs Arkansas, 1-4-1 vs Auburn, 3-18-3 vs Florida, 13-41-2 vs Georgia, 8-6-1 vs Kentucky, 2-14-1 vs LSU, 5-7 vs Ole Miss, 5-6 vs Mississippi St., 2-18-2 vs Tennessee, and 11-2 vs Vanderbilt. That’s correct, Carolina leads the all-time series against 2 SEC teams...Kentucky and Vanderbilt. This is Carolina Gamecock football.

But, the comparison of only 12 seasons in one conference does no justice to the tradition of South Carolina football. So lets compare the Cocks record versus D-1A schools they have played 20 or more times: 36-61-4 vs Clemson, 17-24-3 vs Duke, 3-18-3 vs Florida, 13-41-2 vs Georgia, 9-12 vs Georgia Tech,11-17 vs Maryland, 16-34-4 vs North Carolina, 25-26-4 vs North Carolina State, 2-18-2 vs Tennessee, 21-12-1 vs Virginia, and 34-20-2 vs Wake Forest. William Brice is a crap hole. That’s correct; Carolina leads the all-time series against 2 of these 11 teams...Virginia and Wake Forest. This is Carolina Gamecock football.

Gamecock fans justify their horrible football record thru the strength of the SEC conference. But let’s look at the Gamecock’s record against the other big 4 conferences. South Carolina is 172-221-18 vs the ACC, 6-8 vs the Big 12, 22-26-5 vs the Big East, and 3-5 vs the Big Ten. This is Carolina Gamecock Football.

But all this tradition and past records are meaningless. What is more important is the recent history. Only losers live in the past. We are in the best years of Carolina Gamecock football, and the future has never been brighter...nor has it? Carolina is coming off another losing season, the 9th in the last 13 seasons. Overall record since “the legend” Lou Holtz became Head Coach: 27-32 (0.458). Since 1995: 43-59-1. Since Joining the SEC: 60-75-1. Since 1990 South Carolina is 69-86-3. Carolina has finished in the Top 15 once in the past 15 seasons, and been to three bowl games in that span. This is Carolina Gamecock football."

^^I don't like your effort at all.

When we were talking about Walmart fans, you didn't want to be likened to Chapel Hill.

But when it comes to how much classier you are than USC (like "light and dark," according to you) and how superior your sports programs are, you couldn't wait for the comparison.

I've always rooted for Clemson. But just for you, next time your Tigers come to the Dean Dome, I'll make sure to not give a shit if they finally break that pathetic streak they have going.

Everybody else is right. I am wrong. Clemson is to Chapel Hill what State is to USC. I've seen the light.

andddddd how exactly is that bad?

calling a fanbase walmart fans (which UNC has) is different from comparing the class of Clemson to a third party (South Carolina)..so i completely fail to see what your argument is at all.

there are 4 points that ive tried to make

1)Clemson fans ARE NOT walmart fans
2)Clemson fans are FAR FROM the likes of UNC fans
3)clemson's athletic program is worlds above South Carolina's (which you countered with 5 horse riding championships)
and
4)Clemson is much classier than USC

and what in the WOOORLLD does

Having been to both Clemson and USC and experiencing both fanbases I will weigh in with what I think is a pretty accurate assesment of them. Now these are generalizations, so they don't apply to everyone.

Both fanbases are a little delusional in terms of how great their football programs are, but at least Clemson actually has history in their program and multiple conference championships and a national championship. USC has one conference championship from 1969. Both are some of the most die hard fanbases in college football, but I'd have to give the edge to the Gamecocks simply for the fact that they sold out their stadium during a winless season, and have never been very good. Also Death Valley is notorious for having all four corners of the upper deck empty during games against cupcakes and ACC opponents that they think are inferior to them. It's not a complete knock on them. Clemson has like 6,000 less students than USC, and they are in a small ass town rather than a city.

Both fanbases have been nice to me. USC did have your normal amount of assholes though. I've never had a bad experience with Clemson fans though. Not even as much as a boo while walking by them. In fact they usually went out of their way to greet me and make sure I was enjoying my experience there. Both have their country good ol' boy fanbases. I mean that's what you can expect from things associated with that state. USC seemed to have the more backwards thinking rednecks though. I mean I'm talking about the ones that can't let the Civil War go, and there are some you question whether they have an extra chromosome (this applies to ones that are obvious non-alums). The Clemson fans on the other hand while Southern in nature are good people. They would seem like the type of people that while they may have been around racism growing up, they are enlightened enough to not completely think that way.

The women at USC love to wear their little black dresses that have a plunging neck line to the games and seem less classy overall. They seem like the girls that go to college just to find a husband and get a degree that can get them a decent job in an office and stay there for the next 35-40 years, but their husband is the one that brings home the big paycheck (note this doesn't apply to USC's female grad students who usually end up with a great career). They are the kind that you would date for a maximum of 6 months and you know right from the start you don't plan on anything serious with this girl. You only go out with her to go to the games, go to parties/bars with, and come back to fuck at the end of the night. You only want to have a good time with them, not marry them. The Clemson women on the other hand do love to wear their orange sun dresses, but they also like to wear a nice pair of jeans, a white button-up shirt and an orange sweater vest over it. They are classier overall. They like to party, but their entire college career isn't about partying and finding a husband. They often go on to have great careers possibly something with a science background. They seem to be more goal oriented, but are still the typical Southern Belles. They are the kind that you want to marry, and not just settle for.

Some of this can be seen in how the two schools were founded and who they catered too when looking at the Tillmanites and the Conservatives.

Political factions in 1880s South Carolina

Tillmanites
Favored college: Clemson

Confederate service: 50.0%

Conservatives

^^AHA, sorry bout that. You posted a failtruck at me. I know what you're saying...it's just that you're getting in the way of my argument.

Dude said Clemson is like UNC-CH.

I said that it isn't. If anything Clemson is like State, and USC is like Chapel Hill. I gave plenty of evidence to support my assertion. Most of it revolved around history and academics.

But then everybody else came in and pointed out that my analogy doesn't work when you consider athletics. I had to run with it and make whatever case I could to paint Clemson as the underdog.

When really I think my analogy still applies despite athletic programs. Clemson's just been more consistently successful at beating their USC rival. Auburn was kicking the shit out of Bama for a while there. And hopefully State can start competing with Chapel Hill in basketball again.

^I agree with what he said.

bttt for PSU's win over #23 Illinois, a team they beat in Champaign. I guess it's ok. It's a record setting win for them (school record for most wins in the regular season), and most of their fans are new to basketball. The Bryce Jordan Center is usually pretty barren at this time of the year.

That was a least twice as fast as any rush I've ever seen. The entire lower level was empty in 5 seconds.

San Diego State fans just rushed the court for beating St. Mary's and going on to the Final Four of the NIT at MSG.
