"What I would like is for this to be an anger-fuelled review. You know the type. Where they took some property I loved, or even liked, and distorted it beyond belief, creating something that offended every one of my sensibilities. Those reviews can be a lot of fun to read, as well as a lot of fun to write.

Unfortunately, I wasn't angry. I was just bored. Yes, bored. Big explosions and CGI creatures are not interesting just because they're BIG. It takes about five minutes to get desensitised to all the Big Stuff Happening, and so for the remaining seven hours you're just numb. CGI should work for your story, not the other way around. And I'm not saying that from the point of view of an analytical critic; I'm guessing a lot of the audience is going to feel the same way, even if many of them can't articulate why. When mega-huge Transformers are climbing up the side of a pyramid, you don't for a second believe that's what you're watching. You're watching an exercise in large-scale CGI, and that lack of engagement is what makes it dull. No attempt is made to engage us with the story, so you end up just ticking off each scene as it runs through the predictable motions.

I'd have been more impressed had the CGI been better. The Transformers, I'm sorry to say, have not improved since the first film. They're too busy, there's too damn much going on. If you're going to do anything with the core idea of a Transformer, then I should be amazed at how all the parts folds into one another, how a robot can become a truck. Instead, we're blinded by an infinite number of moving parts that mean nothing. As if someone waved streamers in your face and then showed you a semi-trailer."

just got back from seeing a sneek peak... i think it's going to be the movie of the summer. it's not a great movie per say but it's definitely entertaining. plenty of giant robots, over the top explosions combined with just the right amount of comic relief . i actually couldn't believe how adult some of the jokes were with it's pg-13 rating but it's quality summer fun. kinda sorta follows the plot of the original animated movie for all my nerds out there.
highly recommended A+++ would see again.

"But if that weren’t enough, he had to add even more comic relief than the first time around. Remember Turturro? Yeah. Well apparently he had it in his contract that there needed to be a character even more obnoxious than him to say all the REALLY shitty lines. It’s Turturro squared. Then there’s the Joepecicon – a terrible GOODFELLAS joke gone awry in the form of a small Decepticon who cracks wise…incessantly. And worst of all, the frightening sidekicks of the film and the mistake this film will most likely be forever known for: Mudflap and Skids, the Stepin Fetchbots of the film. It’s as if Michael Bay looked at Jar Jar Binks and said “Oh, fuck no. Really? People find THAT offensive? Fuck that, I’ll show them a fucking stereotype they’ll never fucking forget!” And he does. Oh. My. God. They speak in clichéd urban slang, tossing around phrases like “I’m gonna pop a cap in your ass” while fist bumping and mumbling unintelligently in a voice that sounds like a bad Chappelle Show sketch. Then you get a close up. And they each have bug eyes and a gold tooth. Then there’s this jackass comment about them not being able to read. My jaw was on the floor. I mean, if you’re gonna toss out a bad stereotype, at least have the courtesy to make that stereotype a complete badass so as to deflect complaints that this is a deliberately negative portrayal. These mother fuckers are incompetent, bumbling and never, EVER, cool."

I must say I was expecting generally positive reviews consistent with the people-in-the-Michael-Bay-thread's logic.

If there aren't at least two of the following three items...

1. A sentient transforming planet
2. Dinobots
3. Hot Rod vs. Galvatron

...then there's not even "kinda sorta" to it!

yea but the dinobots were barely any part of the animated movie. if it has
-megatron coming back to life (galvatron)
-hotrod
-optimus dying
-unicron
-or starscream being the leader

then its somewhat like the animated film

just saw it at mission valley. i thought it was pretty lame. the only thing worse than the shitty attempts at humor in every scene was the fact that the entire theater laughed at stupid shit the whole time. i'm pretty sure more people laughed at this movie than when i saw the hangover. jetfire is the best character in the movie by far.

i thought it was good, it had a lot of throwbacks to the old movie and the original series. a lot of the plot needed to be more developed but it was a sweet movie overall.

As was the first scene she was in where she was perched up on that bike. My theater roared with approval at the sight of that.

that shot was so retarded, I've watched enough American Chopper to know that nobody sits on a fully assembled bike to airbrush the tank

The worst part about the movie for me was when they walk out of the door of the Air and Space museum and are immediately in an aircraft boneyard in the desert. My only true "WTF are you serious?" moments. The other little skips in time/location I could deal with.

I saw it

I liked it

It definitely had a lot of throwbacks to the movie and the series which I really appreciated. The special effects were some of the best I have ever seen. Especially Devastator.

Yes there were stupid quirky parts in the movie but that was to be expected. If you ever watched the cartoon, there were tons of them (cue the Junkions). It makes me laugh that people went into this movie expecting a seriously awesome plot. They are giant sentient robots. Seriously, people get over yourselves.

Overall, the fight scenes were awesome and Optimus Prime is a motherfucking badass. Nuff said. I definitely thought it was better than the first and I would see it again.

by that same token you could approach a movie like ironman and use the fact that it's a guy fighting evil in a suit he designed as a defense for why it wouldn't have to have a good plot and tell anyone who disliked it to get over themselves because it's a ridiculous concept anyway.

" Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a horrible experience of unbearable length, briefly punctuated by three or four amusing moments. One of these involves a dog-like robot humping the leg of the heroine. Such are the meager joys. - Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun Times

Revenge of the Fallen is two-and-a-half hours of top-shelf special effects deployed indiscriminately; a roaring, plotless, character-less mess that sees mainstream moviegoers as money-spending, barely sentient automatons. I want to emphasize the two and a half hours, because that running time seems downright criminal. It filled me with despair. At some point — probably around 100 minutes in, though I didn’t have a watch — I became convinced that the movie would never end. - Eugene Novikov, AMC TV

I hated every 149 minutes. This is so bad it’s immoral. Michael Bay is a time-sucking vampire who will feast off your lost time. This is why the movie is so long. - Victoria Alexander, FilmsInReview.com

Revenge of the Fallen is almost literally plotless. It’s like a movie based on a TV Guide description. A bloated, ponderous piece of s**t. - Devin Faraci, CHUD

Despite having lowered the artistic bar to Death Valley levels, director Michael Bay has somehow managed to figure out a way to slither beneath with the flexibility of the pole dancers-in-training that he prefers to hire as his female extras. - Peter Sobczynski, eFilmCritic.com

Putrid, offensive and life-sucking. Early word is describing this woebegone fiasco as the next Batman and Robin. Having seen both, Joel Schumacher has every right to protest the comparison. - Dustin Putman, TheMovieBoy.com

The first film was a summer action movie masterpiece, this one can’t even make giant, transforming robots stay interesting for its entire running time. - Matthew Razak, DC Examiner"

I loved it. I didn't go into it expecting Citizen Kane... it's a movie about robots for Christ's sake. It is what it is. I never once looked at my watch and was engrossed the whole time. I thought that it was as good, if not better than the first. The Transformers were great, and there were tons of them. The fight scenes were done well and very enjoyable. There were silly parts (the twins), but nothing as bad as the Autobots stumbling around the back yard in the first film.

My only question is, what is with Michael Bay and sweaty girls? Not that I'm complaining...

And I'll pay $7 to watch Megan Fox run in slo-mo any day.

the black people in my theater seemed to be thoroughly amused by the twins

i'll admit, they weren't quite as annoying as I was thinking they were gonna be, but it still would have been better without them

haha - here's hat Ebert really thinks about it. Not his "official review", but on his blog where he's completely honest
http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2009/06/the_fall_of_the_revengers.html
Quote :
"The day will come when "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" will be studied in film classes and shown at cult film festivals. It will be seen, in retrospect, as marking the end of an era. Of course there will be many more CGI-based action epics, but never again one this bloated, excessive, incomprehensible, long (149 minutes) or expensive (more than $200 million). Like the dinosaurs, the species has grown too big to survive, and will be wiped out in a cataclysmic event, replaced by more compact, durable forms.

Oh, I expect the movie will make a lot of money. It took in $16 million just in its Wednesday midnight opening. Todd Gilchrist, a most reasonable critic at Cinematical, wrote that it feels "destined to be the biggest movie of all time." I don't believe "Titanic" and "The Dark Knight" have much to fear, however, because (1) it has little to no appeal for non-fanboy or female audiences, and (2) many of those who do see it will find they simply cannot endure it. God help anyone viewing it from the front row of a traditional IMAX theater--even from the back row. It may benefit from being seen via DVD, with your "picture" setting dialed down from Vivid to Standard.

The term Assault on the Senses has become a cliché. It would be more accurate to describe the film simply as "painful." The volume is cranked way up, probably on studio instructions, and the sound track consists largely of steel crashing discordantly against steel. Occasionally a Bot voice will roar thunderingly out of the left-side speakers, (1) reminding us of Surround Sound, or (2) reminding the theater to have the guy take another look at those right-side speakers. Beneath that is boilerplate hard-pounding action music, alternating with deep bass voices intoning what sounds like Gregorian chant without the Latin, or maybe even without the words: Just apprehensive sounds, translating as Oh, no! No! "

I got more excited for the movie the worse the reviews were. It's not a movie that was intended to reviewed, it was a movie that was made to be enjoyed. It's two and a half hours of giants robots, explosions, bad jokes, and Megan Fox. That's all it was meant to be, that's all it's ever going to be.

And that's exactly what it was. It's going to get terrible reviews, but people are going to enjoy it nonetheless.

It wasn't a bad movie but it could have literally been half as long and not lost anything. It's the only movie I've ever watched where I felt the action scenes were dragging.

Also, when did the Pyramids at Giza get a beach?
