i'm gonna try to go next year, i can't make it this year either.

i think state surprises maryland and goes down to the wire against wake. I hope this team comes to play, but you never know with this squad.

maryland, then wake, then duke/boston college/uva... we could potentially go a few rounds. we could also lose on thursday.

but i think we have a pretty decent draw.

A first round exit is a blessing in disguise.

We can end the misery and start looking forward to football.

I calculated tournament probabilities by applying Bill James' log5 formula (http://www.diamond-mind.com/articles/playoff2002.htm) to Ken Pomeroy's pythagorean winning percentages (http://www.kenpom.com/stats.php?y=2009&s=19):

SEED TEAM QUARTERS SEMIS FINALS CHAMPION
1 North Carolina 100.00% 84.18% 64.87% 42.46%
3 Duke 100.00% 87.24% 58.80% 30.31%
2 Wake Forest 100.00% 77.96% 33.50% 13.46%
5 Clemson 85.37% 56.04% 19.16% 8.36%
4 Florida St. 100.00% 40.33% 9.02% 2.67%
9 Miami 67.64% 12.61% 5.63% 1.79%
6 Boston College 64.48% 9.61% 2.75% 0.49%
7 Maryland 54.15% 12.63% 2.58% 0.47%
10 NC State 45.84% 9.38% 1.70% 0.27%
8 Virginia Tech 32.35% 3.19% 0.90% 0.17%
12 Georgia Tech 14.62% 3.60% 1.23% 0.13%
11 Virginia 35.54% 3.12% 0.58% 0.07%

It would be more appropriate to use only conference games (Pomeroy's numbers are for all games), but fuck that I'm not doing it

do you have them from two years ago? it'd be fun to see what percentages we broke getting into that championship game.

^^Interesting to see the numbers, but I have a hard time believing Duke had the second-best chance to win that year. They were 8-8 in the regular season.

They had one of the most efficient defenses in the country

Henderson was hurt at the end of the year

They lost four ACC games by a total of twelve points

Pythagorean winning percentage (and pretty much any predictive or evaluative metric) has nothing to do with your win-loss total.

Well, there you go, all that makes sense...the 8-8 being the only thing I remembered off the top of my head about them, of course.

LOL there are still 10k tickets available to the tourney - 9 of the 12 ACC teams weren't able to sell their allotment. they've barely broken 26k total sales (which is more than they can sell in charlotte or greensboro)...in 2001 the tourney at the dome sold 40k+

I live in atlanta and you couldn't pay me to go sit in the upper deck of the dome to watch these games

UNC dropout / guy I knew in high school on Facebook:

Quote :
"They only have 1 legitimate national championship in 1983. The 1974 championship came on the heels of an undefeated season in 1973 in which they were barred from the tournament due to recruiting violations (tournament which UCLA won). However, those same illegally recruited recruits, namely David Thompson, were on the 1974 team as well."

Uh oh shit just got real.

Quote :
"Vasquez sounded off on Javi Gonzalez' claim that he wanted to punch him in the face after the Maryland guard hit a meaningless three at the end of the teams' contest at the RBC Center recently, telling him to bring it on during their first round matchup Thursday night.

"It was just me being me. He's a Spanish man, he knows he can't mess with a Spanish man. Back in my neighborhood I have people that support me too, so it wouldn't be that easy," Vasquez joked. "Tell him to bring it on.""

Vasquez should ask Greg Paulus what happens when you piss off Javi. You get an elbow brought through your face and a black eye to show for it.

they should have started this today. played the first round today and tomorrow, then a day off, then finish on sat and sun. so we can be better rested for our 4 games in 5 days.
