I like Bianca too, but, at least to me, it comes off as pornstar-ish. And I am trying to be very aware of such names. Perhaps some on my list are pornstar-ish. If so, please do point out (not just you, anybody..!)

"Most of those names don't seem to lend themselves to such ease of mockery, so you're probably safe."

Ok, good that you inserted the 'don't'. You had me royally confused there for a little while!

*******

Samantha Yoshiko Fujimoto... hmmm, very interesting. I love it! You know what Yoshiko means, right? I hope you live up to your name!!!

Quote :

Very good point. I feel like Zara now. Or Eva. Or Vera. Or Marie.

BTW, what do you guys think of the name Matilda, or Mercedes, as first names? (yes, I am fully aware of the "can I ride you baby?" teases for the car name)

I have never, ever liked Mercedes as a name. I think my opinion has been biased by attending some schools with a high minority population though

If you all wanted to be cruel, you could do Luciana Lucinda
Seriously, though: go simple with the middle name! Matilda is not simply enough. Two syllable max.

Quote :
"can you get a more generic name? i think not.

Sure: John [something even more bland]
We like it, and we have good reasons for choosing that (did I mention that my dad's dad is a Thomas, and my fiance's paternal grandfather was also a william? )

People tend to forget that a good name doesn't have to be exotic or attention-grabbing.
^luciana eva isn't a great combination, since that's three ahh sounds across two names.

Matilda is actually a German-origin name (Mahthilda), meaning 'powerful in battle'.

The French version is Mathilde.

Shit. It is a shame that such a good name unfortunately has a bad rep to it. It means 'truth'.

It kinda is. It is climbing up, currently about the 60th commonest name. See what some woman says on that name website:

Quote :
"Matilda is steadily climbing up in popularity in England... it was off the top 100 chart when I was pregnant 4 years ago... The next year it was on number 83 and it's up to 60-something now. Watch out for it getting popular in the US too, now with Heath Ledger's death (more mention of his little girl, called Matilda.)"

For the US, wow, this is very interesting:

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/index.html

Put Matilda, and say check for last 150 years.

You will see that it was in the top 100 or so most popular names in the late 1800's/early 1900's, then in the top 500 to 700 by the 1940's, top 900 in the 1960's, and then after 1964 it has not been in the top 1000 names. (new birth registrations, not names of all living people).

Check out the site, it is cool to see trends. Also, top 1000 baby names in the 2000s decade:

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/decades/names2000s.html

And you can choose any decade all the way back to the 1880s.

OK, just for fun: (names from all SS card applications in the US)

Top 10 female/male baby names of the 2000's (USA)

And then it is fun to look up any of those names and see how popular they have been (yearly) since 1880. I looked up

BERTHA

1940: #140
1985: #958
Since 1985: not in the top 1000

Haha, I am the one who actually came up with that name ages ago when she was pregnant. I have known only one Luciana ever, and she was a friend/classmate years ago at http://www.hamilton.edu (1998-2000), and she was Romanian. That's how I know the name.

Yeah, we are both pretty much set on it, and he have been calling the bump/fetus Luci Puci (Loochy poochy) as a pet name for the past few months, so we are attached to the name.

In Spain, it is pronounced the way it is written (Loo-see-ana), but in Italy Loo-chee-ana, and that's what we prefer/want. Although, the problem with that is that 100% of the people we ever tell the name to, we will have to tell them the pronunciation because without fail, everybody would pronounce it with the 's' sound.

Quote :
"If you all wanted to be cruel, you could do Luciana Lucinda"

Haha... and actually both names are the same, origin-wise (including Lucia, Lucy, Lucca, Luscius etc). All come from the Latin lux, which means light.

Quote :
"So OEP is ME'rn?"

I was born in and grew up in the ME (and spent 6.5 years in the US getting my BS and MS... the best time of my life ), but that's not what I am. I am South Asian. But more importantly, culturally speaking, I am neither. I am more international in outlook and habits than most people I know. I get comments like "Wow, I don't know anyone from [my country/region] who does/says/eats/etc this" quite frequently.

MUST SLEEP.

WTF???

Marijuana Pepsi Jackson???

Now that's just straight-up insane and cruel.

And y'all thought my list was bad?!

Quote :
"Sawyer's mother, Maggie Johnson, picked her name. Her father objected but lost the argument. To this day, a lot of family members and best buds call her Pepsi.

"She said that she knew when I was born that you could take this name and go around the world with it. At the time as a child, I'm thinking yeah, right. You named my older sister Kimberly. You named my younger sister Robin," Sawyer said.

I've tried several times over the years to find Marijuana - the person, that is. When I was a cub reporter at the Beloit Daily News in the early 1980s, there was a rumor around town about an elementary school girl named Marijuana Pepsi Jackson or maybe Jones.

Some people swore that pot and Pepsi were her mother's two favorite things. Others claimed a mix of both coursed through her bloodstream when the child was conceived or born or both. You'll find chatter about this on the Internet.

Sawyer's aunt, Mayetta Jackson of Chicago, clearly remembers when the name was picked in 1972. The newborn's mother and father were products of the post-Woodstock era when reefer was rampant.

"And they would cool off with a Pepsi," she said, which makes you think it's lucky for Sawyer that it wasn't Coke instead. "I thought it was crazy," her aunt said about the name, "but they were such fun-loving people that it suited them.""

Don't worry, it's not the name that you picked. It's people in general.

I never thought that ANYONE would EVER have a problem with pronouncing Silas. It's a little old fashioned, but St. Silas. . .Silas Marner. . .hell, Silas on Weeds. But I have heard my son's name pronounced "See-laus" instead of "Sigh-lass" a ridiculous number of times.

That's an awesome and inspirational story. All wannabe gangsterz and thugz 4 lyfe need to read that.

Funny:

Wow... imagine if her name was Marijuana Coke!!!

Also funny:

Quote :
"In 1998, she got a job teaching elementary school children in Atlanta. She also sold real estate there. It was the one time in her life that she went by MP Sawyer professionally because the name Marijuana was freaking out the customers and causing her for-sale signs to be stolen as souvenirs."

FINALISTS FOR 2nd NAME!!!

I thought about it, and my wife and I agree that since the first name is long, the second has to be short -- 5 letters or less. My brother suggested:

Luciana Noor

They both mean light, 1st in Italian--a Western language, and the 2nd in Arabic--an Eastern language, signifying her mixed Western-Eastern heritage.

What do you good folks of TWW think about that one? I would actually prefer:

Luciana Roshni, because 'roshni' is light in my mother tongue, but it is long as well, so from that point of view, 'Noor' is better.

Here are the other finalists for the 2nd name:

Ciara (means black-haired one in Irish; English version everybody knows: Kira/Keira... and my daughter is famous in the hospital for having black hair and the most hair )

NOTE on pronunciation: In Gaelic, pronounced 'KEER-ah', but in the US, see-EHR-ah

umm, believe it or not, TWW is made up of thousands of real live people.

what difference does it make if i ask TWW, or a baby-naming website, or hundreds of my co-workers, or my friends, etc?

people are people, and everybody has some unique perspective to offer. i am asking TWW because where else could i have access to thousands of people at the touch of a button with almost no effort?

just because it is TWW or the internets doesn't make it any less real compared to live flesh and blood humans i see around me.

and yes, i have gotten some excellent advice and suggestions here (length of names, names which are brand names as well, to avoid the same syllable in the 2 names, etc).

Dude, that is like basic naming stuff that you should have known already. I assumed that you wanted to have two long names packed with a's because you really liked it in spite of the fact that it was ridiculous, and I thought you were kind of cool for that.

I'm surprised neither you nor your wife realized how fucking absurd (and awesome) by American standards it would be to name your kid, "Luciana Alana." Shit, just go all out, combine them, and tack on your second fave--Lucianalana Allegra.

Or just max it out:
