If you want. But I think slow clapping is petty, and shows your true character. Therefore, I will never associate with you because of it. It makes you a poor excuse for a human.

Wow, I was expecting this thread to die...

Quote :
"If they (the store) aren't going to put cart corrals in the lot, I can only assume they (the store) do not care if I put my cart in the grass/dirt curb islands."

Still applies.
I'd never leave my cart where it can hit someone else's car or block a parking space.

Also, lol at the analogies in this thread... there's a critical failure for some people here to understand the difference between:
Wanting convenience/being realistic/knowing that someone exists whose primary job is to deal with the particular issue
vs
Going out of your way to be an asshole to employees

consumers control the market. if someone wants to be lazy, then they will, and leave their cart somewhere random. if the store doesn't like it, then the consumer will take their business elsewhere.

^ right (but it also doesn't make it "right" if there is a right/wrong here. i think there is, others not so much)

but none of this has anything to do with whether i like you or not. if you are lazy and selfish (doing everything out of convenience for yourself, or whatever) then i would prefer not to keep you as a close friend. even IF you take your cart back.

apparently this is difficult to understand though.

Well, that's the thing, then... generally I don't keep people as friends who are petty, unrealistic, naive, moralist, and pretentious for all the wrong reasons.

I suppose this is an "agree to disagree" situation.

selfishness is a survival instinct. everyone is selfish one time or other. if you say you've never been selfish, lazy, morally wrong, mean from time to time, then i'd call you a liar.

this topic is one of those instances.

^^how do you know me so well? its like you know me betta than i know myself

if those comments are directed towards me, then let me point out

1) this is the internet
2) you are being judgmental here (if you think i am petty, pretentious, and blah blah blah, unless we are bff, and i just didn't know. but i don't think we've ever met. so hi, how are you, i'm katherine and i return my shopping carts.)
3) this all started because i said something like "i will be FORCED to defriend you"
4) someone took that way, way too seriously. if i was really angry, i'd probably choose big girl words.
5) having an opinion is pretentious?
6) ...
7)???
8) the end.

^ obviously i love it. i am so stupid. how could i bet this stupid. just because i (GENERALLY) don't like people who don't put their carts back (SUBJECT TO EXCEPTIONS). seriously? SERIOUSLY? man. talk about easily offended. dear everyone's panties: i am sorry. i'm also pretty good at getting out knots. and i won't judge you if you have skid marks. i swear.

For the record, you're still missing the point:
I placed arbitrary judgments of your character upon you based on some posts you made on an internet message board about what you dislike and how you choose friends.

You assume I'm just getting pissy and trying to insult you. Thus, you defended yourself against those judgments... you implied that they weren't really accurate and probably figured that they were misplaced or incorrect. You even implied that since I have so little to go by, I couldn't possibly place an accurate judgment upon you. One could go so far as to say that the basis of my judgments were "petty", or "trivial".

I'll let you figure out the rest, here. No, you probably still don't get it...
After this, you continue to assert that you are right/your opinion is correct that accurate judgments upon someone's laziness/selfishness can be made based upon where they put their carts. You defend the idea that not taking one's cart back to the store at the CV HT is somehow not a "petty" or "trivial" matter.

[Edited on March 20, 2009 at 2:49 PM. Reason : by the way, who besides you is getting serious? I'm getting a good laugh out of the ignorance.]

ps. ps's are very serious.

OK EVERYONE HOLD IT

Are we talking about people who leave their carts loose in the parking lot pavement? I don't think I've seen a single person in this thread defend that behavior.

Or, are we talking about people who don't return their carts, but go ahead and pop them up on the median/curb so that they don't roll around.

Because it seems to me that you guys who are in favor of customers returning the carts are trying to conflate the two in order to distract from your laziness.

Here's another lazy bastard who's outraged that he would be hired to collect shopping carts........ and then actually have to collect them! Go figure - he's a union member.

Quote :
"In the world of unionized warehouse labor, I believe that it is pretty much a cardinal sin not to return your shopping cart to a designated area.

I have violated the unspoken evils of the lot. I was too lazy to go twenty feet. But now that the tables have turned I am able to understand how infuriating it can be. In my situation I sometimes just want to wear a gigantic sign telling people that they should return the shopping cart and then reality strikes: They probably wouldn’t do it anyways. I have no personal connection to the individual, so why should he care? There are times when I want to drop my vest and leave. The consumer seems so ignorant to my existence. Sure it may seem easy, but pushing seventy pound carts will take its toll on the body.

It’s terrible to be pushing carts and see an individual ten feet away push a cart off to the side without a care in the world. It’s even worse to see somebody leave a cart several feet from a designated area out of sheer laziness. You couldn’t take the few extra seconds to do it right? The laziness contrasted with the manual labor doesn’t make sense. In fact, it feels more like a smack in the face -- a reasonable job turned upside down.

The “lot crew” works hard to ensure there is a cart for everybody. To those who return your cart, bravo! I wish to shake your hand. Make that two-way inclusive trip and show your appreciation for having an available cart. In the end you will be rewarded with a happy and grateful crew who’s more than willing to offer help and care."

The fact that you're in the company of union labor says a lot about your point of view.

When I worked at a grocery store, getting stray carts was less boring than stocking or blocking groceries, so the more people who left carts around the parking lot the better.

I guess we're in agreement then. As long as the cart is not rolling loose around the parking lot, it is best to leave it wherever is most convenient for the customer

^^ it also blows ass in the summer when it's hotter than fuck outside.

i used to work at a lowes foods as a cashier and some days i'd have to bag. getting carts was a pain in the ass, but it's part of the job. the only thing that really pissed me off and the reason why i can sympathize with the OP was when i'd have to be the closing bagger and i'd be out getting carts at 10 or 11 at night longer than i needed to because assholes would leave them really far away from any of the corrals so i'd have to go down to the other end of the parking lot to get them. then it meant i wouldn't get started on all the other closing duties until later and i'd end up being there til after i was supposed to leave. i always bring my cart back inside when i go to the CV HT just because i can remember being a bagger and getting pissed off when customers were too lazy to do it. i know it's not exactly convenient to bring the cart all the way back, but it's not that hard either considering it's a really small lot.

Quote :
"this is a classic example of customer versus employee disagreement

it's more accurate to say the customer is not always right, but they are always the customer.

^ well you got payed overtime if you had to stay past your normal shift end, wouldn't you? Technically, you could've just punched out as soon as your shift was up. You might've gotten fired, but that's just the free market - aint it.

Management pays you overtime to stay and pick up the carts - then they pass those extra costs right back to the lazy customers. It all works out in the end.

^ that's only if you work more than 40 hours in a week, which i rarely ever did. i usually worked 10-20 hours during high school and then somewhere around 30 during the summer. it just sucks when you're at the end of an 8 or 9 hour day and you have to spend more time there than you need to because you had to go all over the parking lot getting individual carts since people couldn't take the time to put them in one of the corrals. i know you could give the whole "well that's your job to do it and sometimes people have to stay later" argument, but i'm just saying it's annoying when you have to stay later than you should have to because of something like that, and i don't think anyone would disagree with me. i'm sure anyone else who has had to do that understands, and it's really not unreasonable to put yourself in that situation and think of how you'd feel if you knew you had to spend extra time at work for something that's preventable. to me it just boils down to common courtesy.

khcadwal, I love you.

The decline of things like common courtesy in your actions, politeness, and minding your own business are a sign of the general moral decay of a society. As a country we have lost a lot that used to be good about us.

Being too fucking lazy to return the cart to the store or to a corral is a sign that you are a lazy shithead with no concern for your fellow man. You would rather see someone's vehicle get gouged to shit than walk 20 yards. You are a bad, careless, lazy person. This may be because you lack backbone or maybe your parents didn't teach you well, but either way I don't care to associate with you. I'm as much, or more, of a crazy Libertarian as anyone who would argue that being selfish is good for the country, but being self-centered is not, and yes, there is a difference.

This is exactly the same as people who piss on the toilet seat in a public restroom, or don't flush the urinal. Hell, the appearance of public restrooms is a pretty good indicator of what kind of neighborhood you are in. Generally speaking, the cleaner the restroom the better the people in the area (this does not necessarily correlate to income either).
