Here's my question if anyone can help answer it...how many scholarships do Memphis and Kentucky have? I guess what I'm getting at is if Calipari goes to Kentucky, does he have enough scholarships there to bring all his new players (ie Cousins)? Or would some of his potential new recruits be shit out of luck based on number of schollys? 3/31/2009 12:43:11 PM |

It was posted on PackPride that Kentucky had no scholarships to give if all of their current recruits stayed. Not sure if that is true or not, but it would mean cutting players for Cal to bring his kids with him. 3/31/2009 12:48:09 PM |

^Don't know how accurate it is but I've seen Kentucky fans post that they are already 2 over if Meeks and Patterson come back. 3/31/2009 12:49:11 PM |

well can't they just pull some of the recruits' offers? I know it's frowned upon, but I didn't think it was necessarily against the rules. 3/31/2009 12:56:45 PM |

When you have coaching changes, you generally have one of three things happen to recruits
1. Player commits to Kentucky, new coach comes in, player leave Kentucky to follow coach who recruited him
2. Player commits to Kentucky, new coach comes in, player stays with Kentucky and new coach
3. Player commits to Kentucky, new coach comes in, player goes elsewhere
--
1. Player commits to Memphis, coach leaves for Kentucky, player follows coach to Kentucky
2. Player commits to Memphis, coach leaves for Kentucky, player stays at Memphis
3. Player commits to Memphis, coach leaves for Kentucky, player goes elsewhere
So the question is, what do the ballers like Cousins do? What do the potential recruits like Wall do? What do balling recruits already committed to Kentucky doing? This is all assuming Calipari goes to Kentucky obviously 3/31/2009 1:02:37 PM |

I'm sure this is one of the major factors in the hire, Kentucky probably will pay even more if Cal can assure them that all of the major recruits are following him
which is why I think they are paying out the ass for a championship next season, kinda like the Celtics did last season
cant get good recruits yourself? just hire a coach who already recruited the best

Kentucky's AD stated the school would honor commitments from seniors but revisit underclassmen. A combonation of decommits, voluntary mutual waiver of LOIs, and early departures could free up scholarships. I tend to think if Cal end up at UK, they will make room for Cousins and/or Wall should they want to follow. Of course, it is generally viewed as slimy to take commitments with you to a new program, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. It could mean Wall is more likely than Cousins though. 3/31/2009 1:28:34 PM |

The Wildcats had one scholarship open but signed three players under Billy Gillispie, meaning there had to be attrition either through the NBA draft, transfers or scholarships not being renewed. Whoever is the new coach is likely going to have roster-upheaval privileges. Remember, scholarships are technically renewable every season. " |

It might prevent UNC from becoming the all-time winningest college basketball program. Kentucky has 1988, UNC has 1982, with the potential to get 2 more this season (God forbid).
Obviously, they will pass them next season unless something changes drastically.
Also, UNC only passed them in NCAA tourney wins this year, maybe they can take that back also.
