I've been living on Kauai for 6 years. Would def agree with those that say not to look like tourists. Wear boardshorts, slippers, and a t-shirt and you'll fit in anywhere. Best bet on any island is to talk with locals about what you'd like to do. Usually you'll get hooked up with things to do that are off the beaten path. North shore has been going off this year with 30 ft plus swells one after the other. Humpback whales came in late this year and will probably be around thru mid April. 1/11/2010 3:17:08 AM |

The best thing I did in Maui was Kiteboarding at Kitebeach for 2 days. That was incredible. We actually had good swells that made jumping easy. It was interesting to be snowboarding, and having to dodge sea turtles 1/12/2010 2:58:25 PM |

We did the sunset on Haleakala instead of sunrise. I think that was a good choice for us but it will be really, really cold so plan accordingly. 5/1/2013 1:23:34 PM |

Maui is the definition of paradise. I was there for 8 days last August and I wanted to cry when I got home
Do Haleakala at sunset instead of sunrise. It was cold as fuck and we were exhausted by the time the sun came up, which made hiking more of a chore than a treat.
If you want an adventure cruise, do the Blue Water Raft one. 5 hours, plenty of snorkeling, they give you lunch and breakfast. Saw dolphins, swam with sea turtles, snorkled off the back side of Molokini.
The road to Hana is also great. Rent a Jeep and you'll be fine. We circled the entire island without any problems.
Big Beach was my favorite beach. There's a huge fire party on Sundays on Little Beach that's definitely worth checking out.
We rented a condo and saved a ton of money by buying groceries at Walmart by the airport. There's a Costco too. 5/1/2013 3:38:34 PM |

I used to live in Hawaii when I was in 8th and part of 9th grade. Dad was stationed at Hickam AFB and we lived in this awesome neighborhood for larger families on base. The beach was only about 200 yards from our house. I miss that place a lot and this thread brings back memories. The weather there is just amazingly awesome. 5/1/2013 4:50:03 PM |

^^ nope, but I probably will next time I'm back
And yes, I re-read your post. The Road to Hana is incredibly curvy/twisty, but you tend to pull off to the side of the road to look at stuff. Always something to see, so it's not like you are just driving for really long stretches with nothing to do. 5/1/2013 5:11:11 PM |

Oooh... here are a few awesome activities if you still have a few unplanned days.
Maui: -It's the end of whale-watching season, but you may be able to spot a few -Cliff divers at the Sheraton Maui... breathtaking to watch -Consider a boating trip that takes you to or around Molokai... also one of your better bets for whale-watching -Old Lahaina Luau... prob the best luau on all the islands
Kauai (depends on what part of the island): -Film tours here are incredible -Helicopter tour of Na Pali Coast, Bali Hai and Waimea Canyon... this is really the only way you'll get to see the best of Kauai -Golf in Princeville... incredible courses! -Sugar Plantation + Train Ride at Kilohana: http://www.kilohanakauai.com/
Oahu: -Hike at Waimea Falls, Manoa Rainforest and Diamond Head -WWII historical sites -Queen Emma's Summer Palace and the Royal Mausoleum... great if you want a glimpse into Hawaiian history -Dole Plantation
Where are you staying on Kauai and Oahu? If you're staying in the Princeville area of Kauai or the Ko Olina area of Oahu, then I have a few additional tips/suggestions.

Dole Plantation is a giant piece-of-shit tourist trap. I'd rather go to South of the Border. Try Hawaii Village Plantation instead.
On Maui:
- Iao Valley - Road to Hana. Find a book with trails and what-not along the way. Don't just drive it as fast as you can. MORR1799: tell whoever you're traveling with to suck it up--don't short change yourself. - Continue to drive around the East Maui volcano. You don't need a Jeep, and it's absolutely gorgeous - Seven Pools - Red Sand beach - Dragon's Teeth - Charles Lindbergh's grave - Hike down into the Haleakala. Don't forget sunscreen and water. Be aware Haleakala is high enough for altitude sickness. - I second Haleakala sunset] 5/2/2013 1:18:31 AM |

Now that I'm done with dinner:
Other on Oahu:
- USS Arizona. Go first thing in morning (be there before they open) so you can get an early ticket. - Missouri, Bowfin, and Pacific Aviation Museum are nice, but none of them are 'must see' the way Arizona is. - Punchbowl - Koko Crater - There's a blowhole at Sandy's when the swell is right - After you're done with at the Royal Mausoleum, go down to Alapena Pool, find the petroglyphs, and then get coco puffs at Liliha Bakery - Hanauma Bay (rent snorkel gear at Snorkel Bob's). - Oahu Historical Railroad - Ka'ena point - Makapu'u lighthouse - mac nut farm - Fuck the Polynesian Cultural Center - Valley of the Temples - Iolani Palace - Leonard's - Tantalus/Roundtop/Puu Ualakaa] 5/2/2013 2:12:38 AM |

For Maui:
Road to Hana Drive up to Haleakala, hike down into the crater, back up for sunset. If you want a snorkeling trip we loved Hula Girl (the crew was awesome and they have a full kitchen/bar on board). If you want to do a zipline these guys were so much fun (http://www.flyinhawaiianzipline.com/). We ate at Mama's Fish House on night. It is expensive but the food is amazing. Get a reservation. If you're in Lahaina shopping or something I recommend eating at Aloha Mixed Plate. It's one of the few reasonably priced places you'll eat at while you're there. The bbq pork sandwich is the way to go and they usually have a few drink specials. Also, it may have been said already but Maui Revealed was a great travel guide. 5/2/2013 8:44:33 AM |

^ I wasn't a huge fan of Mama's Fish House, not worth the money.
One thing I forgot to mention below, is there is a Shell station near the beginning of the Road to Hana that has CDs for sale that will narrate the whole way there. Pretty good deal that let's you know what you're looking at while driving.
Here is what I sent to baonest:
Quote : | "There is a sushi place near the Four Seasons that is pretty awesome, highly recommend. Sitting at the bar is the easiest thing.
When you leave the airport there is a place nearby called "Da Kitchen" and it's amazing. It's a hole in the wall place in a strip mall, but the food is great.
Eat spam when you can, it's actually pretty good.
Road to Hana is pretty cool, takes you around the north side of Maui in a clock-wise direction over to the east coast where Hana is. The south side of the island is really bad roads, but if you get a jeep you might have some fun driving it.
There are a lot of good restaurants and bars in Lahaina on Front Street. There's also a Maui Brewing Company restaurant near Lahaina that's pretty good.
Lastly, and most importantly, go to "The Gazebo" for breakfast. It opens at 7:30am and there is a line probably by 7am. It's worth it, giant piles of fried rice, huge omelets, pancakes, etc." |

To this I would add:
- Pali Lookout - Saturday morning farmer's market at Kapiolani Community College (behind Diamond Head) - Queen Emma Summer Palace - Hawaii Village Plantation tour - Hiking (pretty much anywhere in the Ko'olaus) - If you're interested in a luau, I recommend Germaine's. - Duke's Waikiki in the Outrigger Hotel. It's not bad, but nothing special. Everyone seems to want to go when they visit, though. - Surf lessons from any of the little shacks on the beach. Several of them will have someone paddle out and take pictures (of course you have to pay more for the pictures).
Lanikai is a great beach but the traffic in and out is horrible, even by Oahu standards. Bellows Field is close by and usually isn't as crowded. Most of the windward beaches between Laie and a little north of Kanehoe tend to be fairly uncrowded, as well as the beaches towards Ka'ena Point (on both the north and south shores).]]8/12/2014 6:27:29 PM |

Arizona was awesome, and definitely get tickets to tour the missouri. Wish we had passed on the aviation museum to spend more time on the missouri.
Diamond Head is a workout but I really enjoyed it. You need to take a bunch of wicking everything for when you go hiking there, and even just for walking around Waikiki to explore it makes things more comfortable.
Hanauma Bay is definitely worth it. We took the public transit bus out there with no problems. Just have exact cash because they don't give change on the bus.
If you want to bring back a bunch of macadamia nuts as presents, Sam's club has the best prices. 100% Kona coffee was on sale at CVS, so we got all the coffee to bring back there. If your room has a fridge or kitchenette you can save a lot of money by eating breakfast there if it isn't provided by the hotel. 8/12/2014 8:45:51 PM |

Got back from Waikiki Beach about 2 months ago. Best places to eat for Breakfast/Brunch are Eggs and things, Dukes, and Leonards bakery. Best dinner locations are once again Dukes, Top of Waikiki, (revolving restaurant over Waikiki), Hulu Grill, and the Polynesian Cultural Center BBQ buffet. 8/12/2014 9:12:21 PM |

- Hilton Hawaiian Village has fireworks every Friday night at the lagoon. - Bishop Museum has a great collection of native Hawaiian artifacts, including some original feather cloaks and head wear. - Waikiki Aquarium is decent. - Na Mea Books in Ward Center is great for Hawaiian gifts, art, books, etc. Last time I was in there (9-10 months ago) they had started doing a lot of craft classes, so I don't know if they're moving away from being a store to something else. Nohea Gallery in the same shopping center has local artists. Kailua also has a bit of local artsy stuff if you're interested in that type of thing. Otherwise, the ABC stores and International Village in Waikiki have a lot of tourist kitsch. 8/12/2014 11:34:53 PM |
