yeah, and one of the great things about Once More With Feeling is that it wasn't a one-off, stand alone episode, like a lot of musicals are. It was fully and completely integrated into S6, with every plotline making important advances during that episode, including two of the entire series most important advances - 1) learning that Buffy was in Heaven, not Hell, and Willow and Co. pulled her from paradise, and 2) Buffy and Spike's first kiss

Yeah, I kept wondering how they were gonna do a musical, but it was very well done. very believable (well for that universe anyway)

i think it's probably a valid comparison, and even more-so if you take into account the "Browncoats" - die hard fans of FireFly. Certainly the size of the "browncoat movement" would have grown substantially if FireFly had survived.

I just finished.

Personally I wish I wouldn't have seen all the hype for the last ep of Angel. I didn't think it quite lived up to everything I read. I don't really have any complaints about how it ended, but I guess I was expecting a little more closure. But I guess that's not what they were going for. I was also hoping for it to be a little bit smarter. But as the director's commentary says, the plan was to kill these guys and that's what we did. I would have liked for Angel to have had a couple of tricks up his sleeve but it was all pretty straightforward.

Overall, I enjoyed it very much. Glad to be done with them though. Now to clear off the DVR from all the shows I've neglected for the last however many weeks it's been.

so, you were so-so on Buffy S6. What about S7?
Did all the extra Slayers running around annoy the shit out of you, or did you like it?

S7 was alright. I didn't really get too annoyed with anything in particular. I kinda just watched them so I would be done with it, which I guess isn't the best mindset in the world. I liked how the entire season was focused on the big fight at the end, and the whole season was just one giant story. In that regard (and having that fresh in my mind) I liked it better than S5 of Angel. There were too many stray episodes of Angel for my tastes. Heck, the third to last episode of Angel (while being a pretty decent episode) did absolutely nothing to drive the overall story towards it's end. It was pretty maddening to know I was that close to the end and to not be feeling that push. At least every single episode of Buffy S7, from the first to the last seemed to push the story in some way, which I did enjoy.

^^ apparently The WB specifically requested Angel S5 was non-serialized. They thought they were losing viewers because of the heavily serialized nature of seasons 2-4, and wanted to have a lot of standalone episodes in S5 so they could bring in new viewers.

so.... that's what they ended up with. Be careful what you wish for, i guess is the main point.

now that you're done, here are some of my overall comments from hooksaw's earlier Angel thread:
Quote :
"I felt S5 was a lot like S1, in that it basically went week-to-week with no major story arc, except some character arcs like Spike's reemergence. I recently read that the network specifically requested this - since S2-4 were so serial, you had to watch every single week to know what was going on, and the network thought more people would watch if each week was more "stand alone". A lot of people credit Buffy with the "invention", or at least popularization, of the "serial TV drama". Now many of the big dramas rely on this format - 24, Heros, Prison Break. Anyway, I got tired of the demon-of-the-week episodes at W&H. I was mostly really pissed off with how they treated Cordellia. After she had become so important from S1-4, she went into a coma at the end of S4, and they basically didn't even mention her until 1/2 though S5 (I realize Carisma Carpenter just left the show, but they could have written it in a little better). It really pissed me off that Angel, Wesley, Loren and Gunn basically just let Cordy die and barely even lamented over it when she did actually die, but then they spent the last thrid of the season crying and beating themselves up over Fred's death. Of course, when Fred died (or transformed or whatever into Illyria) that's when S5 finally did get good. I really liked the last 7 or 8 episodes. They also learned from their mistakes with Conner in S2 and 3 and reintroduced him in a very smart way."

Quote :
"
Even when she went into a coma, they (the characters) barely gave it a 2nd thought. It was like "oh, yeah... Cordy was so great. she sacrificed a lot. anywhooo.... where the new offices?". Then they started season 5 with the unlimited resources of W&H, and we're supposed to believe that they left Cordy, basically unattended, in a general county hospital? Everytime someone else gets hurt they bring out all the W&H doctors and medical facilities, but no, Cordy just gets Los Angeles County employed nurses.... And if you want to talk about responsibility, well, let's see. When Jasmine was born we discovered that she came to be because Angel got Darla pregnant, Darla had conner, Cordy ascended and came back possessed, Conner got Cordy pregnant, Jasmine was born, Jasmine tried to destroy the world (with happiness), Cordy goes into a coma. So yeah, it's basically all Angel's fault to begin with.
"

and what about Wesley - did you ever think they could, convincingly, turn him from the guy who was introduced in Buffy S3 into what he was by the end of Angel?

Yeah, the transformation of Wesley was pretty amazing. At first, I had to think about what you asked because just from watching it it didn't really feel like much of a change from week to week, but if you look at where he started and what kind of person he was when he ended, it's pretty awesome.

So are the comics actually worth reading? I ended up reading some of the plot lines on Wiki just to find out how the fight at the end of Angel ended. I can't really say I like the idea of Gunn as a vamp. A friend of mine has the first dozen or so issues of the Buffy comic, but he said he stopped reading after they turned Buffy into a lesbian. Sounds like a cheap ploy to sell comics to me. And to paraphrase my friend, "If I want to read stories about Buffy going lesbian, there are 1000s of fanfic sites out there for that".

don't know, have never read them (or any comic book, or graphic novel, for that matter).

but there are talks of a new movie, I guess a remake of the original.

here's an article from yesterday talking about how Buffy is still influencing the current crop of vampire books/tv/movies (or "urban fantasy", as the author calls it) like True Blood and Twilight
http://www.salon.com/books/feature/2009/06/23/vampire_fiction
At least I think that's what it's about..... it's a bit dense and I read it quickly. It sounds like it's written by an English professor trying to make some obscure point in the most round-about way possible, as they often do.

--

My wife and I are almost through Buffy S3 again, I think for the 3rd time? I was a bit surprised, this time, at how long it took for the season-arc to get started, with the Mayor and his ascension. I guess I had been thinking it was a full-season story line, but it actually only really gets started around episode 14 ("Bad Girls"). But once it starts, it goes full force for the rest of the season, except for a couple filler episodes, which are also good ("Doppelgangland", "Earshot")

Those pictures are one of the things I honestly wish I could un-see. I used to think she was attractive until I googled her about halfway through watching Angel, and saw those pictures and from that point on all I could picture when she came on screen was those disgusting burnt sand dollar nipples glued on to plastic beach balls strapped to the front of her chest.

Just...ew.

They are weird, but dont lie and say you wouldnt suck on those all night long.

Mercedes McNab (Harmony) also did Playboy at some point I believe.

^Id find the DVDs or "acquire" them if you have to first. I cant stand what TNT does to shows...stretchovision if you are watching on their HD channel, and they move the commercial breaks around so it just feels uncomfortable watching. Its ok for background TV, but not if you want to actually sit down and watch.

^Thanks!

I just finished watching both of these shows. They were in my recommended list on Netflix (every episode of both series are now on instant play), and I figured they were worth giving a chance and I became absolutely hooked.

Hush and The Body were two of the best episodes of any show I've ever seen. Once More with Feeling was also great, and I absolutely loved the memory loss episodes of both series (Tabula Rasa and Spin the Bottle). Spike is now my favorite television character of all time.

And

i finished watching both of these a couple months ago. i agree on hush, probably my favorite of the series. i also really liked "anne" (the episode) as well as the subsequent crossover of her character to angel. season 3 was by far my favorite of buffy. buffy s4 bothered me a bit because i thought adam looked ridiculously stupid. i thought anya was hilarious, fred adorable, and that lorne was annoying. i thought puppet angel was great.

I laughed so hard during puppet angel, especially when he got over-excited about things.

I never realized that Alex Denisof (Wesley) was on How I Met Your Mother until I read it on his wiki-page. HIMYM has made quite a few Buffy references.

omg i am so glad i searched for this

i was just wondering about the buffy/angel show watching order. i have already kinda fucked up because i'm almost done with buffy season 4 and i guess i should have been watching angel season 1 in between.

i was wondering what happened to cordelia. and how everyone in sunnydale knew she was working for angel. and then how angel said someone warned him that buffy was in danger, etc. i was like, wtf are they just making this shit up?! but now i realize that angel started while buffy was still on air. so it ALLLLLLLLLLL makes sense now. so i guess after i finish season 4 of buffy i will pause and watch season 1 of angel???

i wish i had known this earlier but i am glad i randomly decided to search. and glad someone bumped the topic recently. i LOVE buffy. is angel as good?!

i didn't think angel was as good as buffy but definitely worth watching. i really didn't like the angel s4 story arc. i thought season 5 was great though.

i wouldn't worry about switching back and forth between buffy and angel. there aren't a lot of crossovers, and none of them are especially significant imo. here is a pretty good example

:::buffy in episode of her show::: "oz, take this to angel"
:::angel in episode of his show that originally followed buffy::: "hey oz, what did you bring me?"

furthermore, there aren't crossovers every episode so you end up chopping both shows up which i didn't care for.
