Basically they are not making any bars ban smoking anyway. They are just forcing establishments to take a stand either way. If a place really wants to allow smoking they can become a "members only" club like every bar that does not want to serve food does. A lot of people do not notice this but every place in NC that sells on premise alcohol but no food is a "members only" club. The probably have a clipboard somewhere where you are supposed to sign in as a "member" or "guest" and when the cops are around they put it near the front and make people use it. I mean you are not gonna be smoking in Waffle House anymore but you should not be smoking in there anyway, they do not sell beer and the place is smaller than a high school classroom. ]

Just another example of our freedoms being slowly taken away. Watch out all you fat fucks out there, the nanny state will be coming after all those fatty foods you love so much next. Goddamn self-righteous assholes in government won't be content until every part of our lives are regulated. Sickening.

5/14/2009 1:56:33 AM
This might actually get me to go to bars alot more often... I really hate me and my clothes and my hair smelling like a cigarette.Smoke outside, Drink inside.

5/14/2009 2:16:46 AM
I still find it amazing that I can go out all the time and never smell like smoke the next day. I guess it's because i take showers and stuff like that.also, my clothes that i go out in enter a different pile of laundry and get washed more often. Oh and I'm a smoker that couldn't care less about this. I will just go outside or go out less. Kiss my money goodbye, bars!

People are making too big of deal about this... go outside and smoke then come back in. Some people want to visit various places without breathing a ton of smoke and smelling like shit if they go somewhere after that place.

This is horrible...we are becoming more and more like China each day. I despise smoking and smoke, but if someone wants to allow smoking in their establishment they should have the right to.Just like I, as a non smoker, have the right to avoid that establishment because of it.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”[Edited on May 14, 2009 at 7:58 AM. ^ i'll give you points for that. we are not becoming china. i know i said it earlier, but like i summed it up last night --- even if the government takes away this liberty and 20 more over the next 5 years, we're still not even close to china and i'd never move out of the usa (except to germany, but thats not politically motivated)

honestly, now that i can smell it... i really dont think it smells that bad. the actual smoke is irritating, but i kinda like the smellknow what pisses me off more than smoke indoors? people who smoke while walking down the sidewalk. or outside front doors. when i smoked, i always felt guilty unless i was like 20 feet away from the entrance of the place i was smoking outside of. and i always backed up a good 5-10 feet away from any other person when smoking at... for example... a bus stop.to me its 20 times more of an issue of inconsiderate people than a second-hand smoke thing. but i still think they have the right to do it... just like people should have the right to call them a dick for smoking in a sidewalk mob]

a friend of mine and prominent bar owner located in the heart of downtown said he was going to allow smoking in his place as long as possible and said fuck the governmentto my knowledge...he doesnt smoke but i could be wrong (i have never seen him light up)
5/14/2009 9:05:08 AM
I would say he's not only saying fuck the law, which is fine, but also fuck his non-smoking customers. Not that big a deal, though. And he can probably get away with that, for a while. The punishment is non-criminal and will only be issued to bar owners ($200, big deal) if the health inspector chooses to issue it.Still, he'll eventually realize that's pointless when he notices that none of the other bars who have followed the law don't lose any business. If you agree with this law, I suggest that once it goes into effect and the bars actually start banning smoking, you patronize those bars more frequently for a while to make sure business doesn't dip much at the beginning. Either way, everything will even out as it has every other place where smoking has been banned.
5/14/2009 9:08:11 AM
i am of the opinion that if a place of business doesn't allow anyone under the age of 18 on the premises, then they should be able to allow smoking.any 18 year old can purchase cigarettes and make the decision whether or not to be around it.ORmake it a cutoff time i.e. no smoking between 4 am and 8 pm or somethingwhat about bowling alleys? most of them have rules that minors are to be chaperoned after a certain time. does this apply to them as well?
5/14/2009 9:09:34 AM
5/14/2009 9:10:47 AM
I don't know if bowling alleys are affected, but whether they are or not, it has nothing to do with whether they allow minors. All of that stuff about minors was stricken from the bill before the final vote. It's simply a ban on all bars and restaurants now, and government property I think.Restaurants complained that bars would gain an unfair advantage if they allowed smoking and restaurants couldn't, so they widened the scope to cover bars too.

5/14/2009 9:14:38 AM
Yay! Maybe now they will ban cars because lord knows how much exhaust pollutes mine and your lungs!Hmmm... maybe not, but wouldn't that be grand? I smoke sometimes when I am all drinksy but I don't mind the ban, I usually prefer to smoke outside anyways when weather permits. Maybe this will cut out my drunk-smoking. That too would be grand.
5/14/2009 9:15:31 AM
bowling alleys up here in NY are smoke free by lawNow it's just annoying when my bowling team is bowling a 3 game set against a team with smokers on it. After each game (and sometimes in between frames) they want to go outside to smoke...holds the game up
5/14/2009 9:20:24 AM
^^What the fuck are you talking about?
5/14/2009 9:31:32 AM
The ban goes into effect on January 2, 2010. It's sad that the gov't has to intervene and force all the inconsiderate assholes to go outside to smoke. In our society, it should be common courtesy to go outside and smoke and spare the 80% of the population that doesn't smoke. That's right, you might have to put down your greasy ass chicken wing at Sammys for a couple of minutes and go outside to indulge in your disgusting habit. Boo fucking hoo.If you're at a restaurant or a bar and you have to fart, you go outside. Same applies for smoking.
5/14/2009 9:32:21 AM
5/14/2009 9:34:23 AM
well, i guess if the bar was smokey enough, you could just let it rip and no one would know the difference. but those times are changing.
