Athletes and entertainers if they are dumb going in they are usually dumb going out too. She will have opportunities down the road I'm sure. Surreal life is always looking for washed up trash. At least she lived the good life for a few years, thats more than most of her peers could dream of.

I'm on Bobby's side 100% here. Fuck racists. Freedom of speech doesn't apply to whether or not a message board mod can call you out. The first amendment protects you from government sanctions, and a privately owned board has the ability to do anything it wants. It may go against the board's regulations, but that doesn't make you immune to reality, folks.

Do you really not get it? its fairly simple if you move past the "I want to say nigger too and i should be able to sentiment" and exude some thought. The power in the word is the intent that is within its use. When blacks call each other nigga or niggers they aren't always using it as a pejorative or in a derogatory manner. When they use it they feel as if they have control over it and by extension control over the power that is inherent within the word. however, when a person of a different race uses it the context is often different, as is the intent. This is what crosses the line. Nigger was seen as a thing, not a person and by referring to them as such it is placing them at a level below humanity.

I have never understood how people can be so blind as to not realize a simple concept and let a me too mentality prevent them from realizing it.

I just don't understand how it's still ok for them to use it because it's still a very offensive word, if not the most offensive word in the English language. I wasn't just limiting it to a friendly sense, either. I've seen black people in fights calling each other nigger in a derogatory sense. I can understand the point of it being such a powerful word, but even so, wouldn't you want to take away it's power instead of fueling it by helping it stay prominent in the English language? If you look at the definition of the word, none of it is positive.

Bitch can be a more derogatory word and it is ubiquitous in the English language. A best selling book can have Bitch in the title.

The number of fights started because someone was called a bitch is probably 100x the amount of fights started when someone is called a nigger.

WHERE IS THE UPRAWR?

(ps I used ubiquitous in a sentence)

^^ i agree with you in some respects. I do agree completely that the best way to remove the word from common vernacular would be to stop using the word as a whole.

but even in the situations you described above the intent and context remains different. typically, and i can't vouch for situations where you've heard them use it in a derogatory manner, its used to comment on the person acting as less than they should. such as keeping your clothes on the floor and not taking care of your possessions is niggerish. the intent in that context isn't to be hurtful but, rather, more chastising.

"Me too" > "Only you"
I take issue with your explanation. You say the power is in the intent. But you don't at all explain how the color of someones' skin necessarily determines their intent. It is inescapably racist to suggest that only one race may use a particular word, in whatever circumstance.

Except that both of you are wrong about the nature of language. Forbidding and censoring a word gives it power. Repeatedly redefining it and tolerating its use is the only way to remove the power. I don't make these rules.

Yes, it is protected. When someone says "his speech is protected", they are (or at least should be,) saying that it's "protected against government intervention", as you agree. Saying that it's "protected" does not mean that others can't reciprocate... (Did someone say it did? I may have missed it.)

Right, but the only way to let it die out is to let it freely run its course. If it's censored and targeted, it becomes "special".... If everyone just tolerated its use, and allowed it to be redefined as most all words eventually do, it would become less "special".

Imagine if the same amount of fuss was made about the use of the word "hell". If, for the last century or so, we were all repeatedly forbidden from using the word "hell", and were given very strict punishments for using it, it would still be around today -- just more powerful, more special...

The reason the word "hell" is generally socially acceptable is largely because we simply began to tolerate it. We also allowed it to be redefined -- most uses of the word hell aren't referring to the fiery home of satan, and even when they are, it's not derogatory against christians. (Note: I realize the analogy isn't 100%, but of course, no analogy is 100% and you should already know that...)

Getting back on topic...apparently she lost her $1.3m house back in January?

Quote :
" CHARLOTTE, NC - Fantasia Barrino - who faces the loss of her $1.3 million home here in a debtor’s auction set for noon Monday - is apparently ignoring the looming legal threat, officials told The Post yesterday. The inspirational “American Idol” winner owes a Florida credit company $65,000 - money she borrowed in 2006 to pay back taxes she owed the IRS. The singer made a $10,000 payment in August 2007. But she never paid the rest, so the company won the right in court last month to auction off her house for the balance. Mecklenburg County sheriff’s deputies, who are responsible for enforcing civil court orders, have tried at least a dozen times to reach Barrino at the home and by phone, said Sgt. J.W. England, a supervisor of civil judgments. A deputy spoke a couple of times to Barrino’s mother, but never reached the star, who appears to be ignoring attempts to save her house, officials said. “We try very hard and give the defendant every opportunity to pay,” England said yesterday. Over the course of about a year, Barrino has never responded to court documents, and no lawyer ever appeared in court to represent her, said Larry Goldman, a Charlotte attorney representing the credit company, Broward Energy Management. “I certainly don’t want anyone to lose their house,” Goldman said. “But as far as I’m concerned, we have a judgment.” Barrino, 24, has made no payments and filed no documents since The Post reported a court-ordered lien on the property in Charlotte’s upscale Piper Glen neighborhood last month. Goldman said he never heard from Barrino’s representatives until after the judge’s order. He said he has since spoken twice with reps who haven’t offered to resolve the debt but said they’d get back in touch before next Monday. “My client has continuously asked me why they won’t just pay it,” Goldman said. “I just don’t have an answer.” Barrino’s attorney, Gary Greenberg declined to comment yesterday.
“It’s my practice not to talk about client matters,” he said. Barrino’s agent, Erin Culley, referred questions to the singer’s publicist but was unable to provide contact information for that person."

^ haha pwnd.

i think the ironic thing about nigger is that you have people like the NAACP trying to phase out the word, yet it's constantly used in whats currently the most popular music genre currently.... hip-hop, by black people themselves. If we are always exposed to it, then it won't ever go away.

^ actually its rarely used in hip-hop, but often used in rap. hip hop != rap.

you can take issue with it all you want, thats one of your many rights. however, in y explanation i explicitly stated "however, when a person of a different race uses it the context is often different, as is the intent. meaning that I did not say that someone's skin determines their intent per se.

this is not entirely accurate. nigger is a word that was at one point frequently used and completely tolerated, and at that point it had tremendous power.

Generally speaking the word "nigger" implies an ignorant black. It's occassionally expanded to other races, or used to demean blacks of means, but generally speaking it means an ignorant black. I would suggest that violence and suppression of free speech are great, big, flaming indicators of ignorance. Allowing that, what is it other than confirmation of ignorance to respond with violence and anger? It's just a fucking word.

I personally don't give a fuck what you call me, it would take a lot more than words to incite me to violence. If you're willing to beat someone's ass over a word you probably are well-described by the word nigger, if not some other phrase for a stereotypical uneducated, low-class individual.

i dunno, i guess if i were a real racist then i would have never shared a home and bathrooms and utensils and stuff with a group of black dudes

racism to me can only exist if there is a real prejudice or hate for a "common" (average) person of another race, without meeting them

and i am that way with jews sometimes. but not the blacks. i love the zany blacks.
