I read somewhere that the Panamera line will be greatly expanded in the next few years, including a hybrid model, and a slightly lighter more hardcore model called the GTS similar to the Cayenne GTS.8/22/2009 7:40:38 PM |

VW's Winterkorn reportedly proposes a trio of new Porsches
Quote : | "VW CEO Martin Winterkorn appears to be laying out a future for Porsche that could make the company happier, but might not please its core customers... again. Of course, the impetus is to increase volume. Porsche sold nearly 100,000 vehicles in its last fiscal year -- but won't get anywhere close to that this fiscal year -- but Winterkorn wants the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer to put out 150,000 units annually by 2013.
More volume means selling more of what they've got, or making something new to sell. The new proposed direction is the latter: three new models, two of which would be lower-cost numbers-makers. There were no details given beyond market placement, but the first car would slot in below the Boxster. If you have images of a 914 sputtering through your head, banish the thought -- Winterkorn promises that VW will not make Porsches.
The second car has been referred to as a "baby brother" for the Cayenne, or a Porsche version of VW's Tiguan. That could be the mini-ute that Porsche and Audi have spent the past few years denying its existence. At the top is another version of the Panamera, maybe one with the same stellar interior and driving abilities but with a stellar back end to match. No matter what they end up looking like, the real point is that you'll be seeing a lot more Porsches on the roads soon." |

^Same chassis yes, but it's still a "different" car. It makes slightly more power than a regular Carrera. I find it very attractive aesthetically. The fact that it's limited in production makes it more of a collector's car though And the high price doesn't make it worth it if you are just after a "cool looking car" 9/3/2009 11:20:42 PM |

^^That "Classic" is a rip off. 403 hp? The new 2010 (or is it 2011) 911 is going to have 400hp, so big deal. The GT2 looks better IMO and for $60k less will blow the doors off this car.
As far as VW now "controlling" the company and pushing for more production, wtf is wrong with people. It's Porsche, it's not fucking BMW or Lexus its not supposed to be commonplace!

Actually, Ferdinand Porsche wanted to design a car that the family man could enjoy driving in the Alps with his entire family and have fun driving too... Porsches weren't meant to be rare like Ferraris and Lamborghinis...
I never said the SC was a good buy. This is aimed more for a collector who likes limited edition/production vehicles. I'm sure they will have body kits in the future to mimic this look for the 996/997, so you don't have to buy one of these to get the look. Everything doesn't have to be about car x will go 0-60 or around a track faster than car y. In addition to the performance aspect, I see automobiles as artwork.

how do you justify tripling the price of a car just b/c it has different bumpers and some fancy wheels?
And Porsches AREN'T rare like Ferraris and Lamborghinis. 100,000 cars sold a year is light years ahead of Ferrari + Lamborghini's output.

Porsche used jewish slaves throughout the war, and while his son may have had some reservations, there's no evidence that he gave a shit as long as he could further his own career and get his car(the Type 1) built. If not for a few favors called in, he would have rotted in that prison until the day he died. Of course you could argue that Porsche was really Ferry's creation, but it's all the same car bringing in the same money going to the same family. 9/4/2009 3:01:23 PM |

And I'm no finance major, but how's it work that the company you're taking over suddenly owns you when the bank calls your debt? Why wouldn't the bank just take partial ownership? Or why wouldn't Porsche sell off their VAG shares?
Either way, fuck VAG.

Porsche Product Plan to 2013 Revealed
Quote : | "Autocar appears to have come into Porsche's future plans. The following is a supposed outline of what the company wants to bring to market.
The year 2010 sees the arrival of the Panamera V6 turbodiesel. Since this is an entry-level car (price is speculated at about £60,000) meant to be frugal, it will probably not use AWD but send power to the rear wheels.
The Volkswagen-borrowed engine could be re-engineered and updated so it can also be adapted to the next-generation Cayenne which gets a more curvaceous look like the 911 for 2010. The SUV will feature some engines from the Panamera including direct-injection V8s and a full parallel hybrid. The latter was approved last year but only joins the lineup in 2011.
By 2011 Panamera should be a well-established name and ripe for a hybrid. A similar system to the Cayenne hybrid is likely but without the AWD burden. While the US could get a V8 hybrid, Europe will probably opt for the smaller V6 alternative.
The summer of 2012 welcomes an all-new 911 which will share very little with the current car. Longer and wider, the sports coupe will also be more powerful and more fuel-efficient than ever.
The Cayenne finally gets a smaller sibling in 2013. Rumoured to be called the Roxster, this compact SUV will share Audi Q5 underpinnings and maybe engines. The same year a brand new entry-level Porsche arrives to see the Boxster/ Cayman range move more upmarket.
Having spent quite a substantial amount developing the Panamera, Porsche is keen to spread the platform around and recoup its investment. Possible strategies include creating another model as well as a two-door Cabriolet. Should the board approve we could see it in 2013 as well." |

Ahmet, where did you find that information? I have a hard time believing that Porsche would cancel the Panamera after only one life cycle. Seems like a waste of all the capital they invested in the program. Not to mention making the call before even seeing if the car is a success. 10/30/2009 3:41:14 PM |
Ahmet All American 4279 Posts user info edit post |
I believe it was on autoblog. I was/am interested in Porsche as a company, so I try to keep up with their corporate structure. The power struggle w/Wiedeking and Piëch will probably dictate this, since both the Panamera and the Cayenne were Wiedeking's doing. To see how much influence Piëch really has, remember the Phaeton, a car that really did not make sense to have in the VW family, especially when AUDI had the A8.
I'm neutral on the topic since I think Piëch just wants to see Porsche more focused. He's certainly not done anything bad to Lamborghini (IMO anyway), and he was a big proponent of the Porsche 962 program if I remember correctly, the man likes racing, and being dominant.
Of course, the current chief of Toyota is a big racing fan too, and we see them churn out one boring car after another, though it looks like they have some stuff in the pipeline as well. Time will tell I suppose... 10/30/2009 5:42:13 PM |

Quote : | "1901: Porsche Builds The World's First Hybrid
Yes, we're talking about that Porsche. At the tender age of 26, Ferdinand Porsche built a four wheel drive gasoline-electric hybrid car.
Although famous for his conventional automobiles, Porsche got his start at the Béla Egger Electrical company in Vienna, Austria, where he designed an electric hub motor. Fatefully, he joined coach builder Jakob Lohner & Co. in 1898.
Porsche incorporated a pair of hub motors in the first Lohner-Porsche design, which resembled a carriage with electrically powered rear wheels. It was easy enough to create a four wheel drive version simply by adding two more motors to drive the front wheels, and that's exactly what Porsche did to create the Toujours-Contente, intended as a record-setting racer. The vehicle required almost 2 tonnes of lead acid batteries to run, severely hampering performance and practicality.
To solve the car's weight problem, Porsche added a gasoline engine that ran a generator to power the electric drivetrain; the world's first series electric hybrid. He even raced such a vehicle, which was capable of hitting speeds of up to 60 km/h. The constant quest to improve performance ultimately proved to be the downfall of his electric designs, as he concluded that internal combustion combustion engines were far better suited to automotive use.
Dr. Porsche joined Austro-Daimler in 1906 and eventual rose to become the company's managing director. By the late 1920s, Porsche found himself as a technical director at Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart. His vision of a compact, lightweight Mercedes-Benz vehicle wasn't popular, and he departed. Porsche formed his own design firm in 1931, eager to revisit his small car concept during the depression that gripped Germany. " |
