when my family was living in london, lego launched the pirates sets. harrods had a huge toy floor and in the middle of it was a large vat of lego. as part of the pirates launch, they had a contest for kids to build a vehicle to help the pirates get off their desert island. my bro and i built a big sailing ship that took a good couple of hours to do and entered it. we ended up winning the competition, got invited to meet the president of harrods and had lego sets delivered to our flat as a reward. had we been UK nationals, we would have had a shot at winning a trip to legoland in sweden or wherever it was back then

Of course, right after I say that I disassemble the things, I have to admit that the TIE Advanced is staying together. It's about the only original Star Wars craft they still sell, the rest of it is a bunch of Clone Wars faggotry.

I still have all the instructions. If I ever go dig them out of my parent's attic, I will scan them so they are easier to keep.

The Millennium Falcon and Death Star are both newer LEGO models, and as Erfdawg said, they're well outside of my price range. But a number of the others -- TIE fighter and intercepter, B-wing, A-wing, Y-wing -- have all been discontinued in favor of this new anime shit.

I will admit that the X-wing is another original, but I was always partial to the Empire and am not made of money.

I agree about the brick wall -- it was not very impressive, although I understand they're expanding it somehow. As to the old school sets, they don't have them because they simply aren't produced anymore. Most of the sets from the 90's are all gone. I can't really fault them for not having shit that hasn't been made in a decade (although I still kinda do).

I was amazed to find out this has been going on for ten years. I suppose it makes sense, when I think back to my first star wars lego set (one of the last sets I ever bought, really). Some of them are pretty cool -- if I could find the Star Destroyer model (also discontinued) I'd mug people on the streets to collect enough money for it. Others are meh.

Man, I was totally PUMPED when I got my Lego Mindstorms set way back when, and then I got a small expansion set with a camera to go with it for my birthday.

I'll have to check this store out at some point when I have money. Which means I'll probably check it out around the week of Christmas when I am visiting from Virginia, hahaha.

Maybe there's one of these up there though... Legos rock and are my favorite childhood toy.

Of course, it's also something like three feet long and is supposedly the largest and most detailed lego set ever sold (possibly behind the taj mahal)

Earlier this month, the Lego Millenium Falcon was on sale for like $350 or so... here's the image from the email:

Sadly the link to it doesn't work anymore, so you're back up to $500.

I have to say that after buying it and spending about 50 hours assembling it, no other lego set will ever compare. I find myself tempted to get the $300 Taj Mahal, it being the only other set they've ever released to have more pieces (nearly 6000, while the millenium falcon had 5200). If you've always had that itch to buy the lego sets your parents would never get you as a kid, save up and buy this one. The itch will finally go away.

PS, General Grevous is on sale for $30. It's a 1000 piece set, and going for about 3 cents a piece. Usually sets scale at about 10 cents a piece (and 11 cents a piece for franchise branded things like Star Wars). This is a huge sale.

We'll have to see how hardcore I feel like nerding out once I'm working and all by myself in Virginia.

Maybe I'll meet a group of folks at work social enough to go do things from time to time.

If not, I'll buy a $500 lego set and post pics of it on TWW.

Do they not make the Harry Potter Legos anymore? I can't find them anywhere and online they're ridiculously priced.

Once a set is no longer in production the price starts to shoot up. They can be a good investment if you have the space to store them. I could never keep myself from opening the box and building stuff though.

I run the internet sales for Creative Toys & Hobbies by Hungates...http://www.hungates.com.

Every year we order LEGOs & every year there is different shit made & they discontinued the vast majority of kits from the previous year. Like this damn airplane...

http://www.hungates.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=100708115&Category_Code=lego_city

If you can find one they are worth bank. They were made 1 1/2 years ago & now you can't find them. People go ape shit over kits that you can't get anymore & the mark up is ridiculous. We had an old Avitar Kit that we couldn't give away years ago, we found it at a store a few months back & sold it on eBay for 5 times what the retail price was. crazy shit.

so are there instructions to put together the falcon or are there just a bunch of pieces and you figure it out?

i am assuming there is a manual, but i think it would be cooler and more of a challenge/long term build if there wasnt

Also, GrumpyGOP, there are some new Classic Star Wars sets coming out very soon. A few of them are anniversary editions like the Tie Fighter. http://www.brickwars-sets.com/sets_index_2009.html

The next big licensed sets will be based off the Prince of Persia movie and Toy Story. I'm kind of dumbfounded at the PoP license but thrilled about the Toy Story stuff. I only hope they do more Pixar films, especially Wall-E. The Toy Story sets will be out in Jan. 2010 and will be based off the first 2 movies. Sets based off Toy Story 3 will be out closer to the films release.

I hear you. I like the Star Wars stuff because lately I've been on a space/aircraft kick, and the SW sets have pieces that are good for that. Spaceships made out of rectangles don't exactly look sleek.

Next time I go to the store I'm getting some brick buckets for sure, though.

man

after the pirate sets

my friends and i set up entire ECONOMIC systems based on lego pieces and plastic gold

you could sell and buy your friends pieces for a plastic treasure chest of gold...and it wasnt like we had the money to devalue the currency by goign out and buying more sets, so it was a pretty solid exchange rate, guaranteed by the bank of i will punch you in the face if you dont maintain a reasonable exchange rate...

I have a couple of unopened retired sets in my closet that I am finally getting around to building..

built this one yesterday:

I could probably sell some of them for profit, but it pisses me off to see how crazy the prices are for old sets on eBay. So I can't bring myself to do it. More lego for me.

This is the most recent Snowspeeder, but you have to buy the whole Hoth Rebel Base set to get it. It was exclusive to Toys 'R Us. Some stores may still have it, but it's a gamble.

This one came out in 2003. You can still get these loose/complete on eBay for about $35.

Also in 2003. This one's UCS scale.

And here's the original from 1999 when Lego first got the Star Wars license.

They're not licensed - they're just fanmade. Exceptionally well fanmade, but not ones that you could buy in a store.
