^^ hell yeah, there's manly stuff on Etsy.
fewer Treasuries or Storques are written about menswear, manly things, and the like, but they exist.

Do any of you actually have an etsy shop? It seems so difficult to draw traffic. Basically the whole SEO thing in general just frustrates me if you can't seem to wedge in.
My wife started a business about a year ago and just can't seem to get the ball rolling, and I told her I'd try and help behind the scenes on the blog and etsy shop as much as I can. She basically creates any type of invitation or announcements for kids (birth announcement, birthday invitations, nursery art, baby shower, kid calling cards, etc)
website: http://hatchedprints.com/ etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/hatchedprints
I've read all kinds of articles (which i'm sure everyone else is reading at the same time) that basically just puts importance on tags and title descriptions, but there has to be more to it than that...right? How are some of these people on etsy hitting the top search results constantly? Is it shop hearts?

^^^My fiancee and I have been to around a dozen arts and crafts festivals over the past few years around NC from Raleigh out to the western edge of the state and one thing I've noticed is that at all of these shows there are at least 2 or 3 chicks who are also on etsy and have mentioned to us that helps expand their base a lot. Even if you don't make money overall from sales after gas/booth fees/food the word of mouth helps. Many towns and cities generally have at least one day a year they host an art festival. I see more of a crowd at the larger cities but poorer quality crafts, like those booths where an old lady just assembles the beads on necklaces from walmart kits. Mountain towns and a few central cities tend to have less draw but items that are much more unique and truly "hand-made".
One of the girls we always see whose jewelry both of us really like because of the style AND that's it's literally handmade from raw metal materials is http://www.etsy.com/shop/maggiejs. Personally I'm drawn to basic metals like copper, silver, brass, tin, etc. so that's mostly why I like them.
Her shop is up near Bryson City way out past Asheville, and her prices are kind of high but she's had enough success to make profitable trips to Atlanta, Cary, and I think Knoxville. 2/14/2011 10:23:30 PM |

Her stuff is cute!
I recommend she do local shows and what not. That can definitely help a lot. I think with etsy, especially with something like invitations that are a saturated product on there, word of mouth makes a huge difference. I know when I was searching for wedding invites on etsy it was kind of daunting the amount of stuff there was.
She could also try doing an ad on a website like Offbeat Mama.3/4/2011 11:39:35 AM |

^^ Thanks!
The main problem is that her items aren't really something you would impulse buy at a crafts show. Especially since most of it needs to be customized, you can't actually order anything.
She went to the "Indie Festival" in downtown Gboro several times last year and nothing really came from it 4/6/2011 2:20:27 PM |

drovkin, another idea might be for her to offer some invitations as a prize to blog readers on a blog with high traffic. i read a ton of craft and sewing blogs that have giveaways and or tutorials that seem to drive a lot of traffic to those who are featured.10/7/2011 12:54:08 AM |

If anyone wants an NCSU tree skirt, I got one from this person last year and she did a really good job. My only complaint is I think she didn't prewash the fabric before sewing. I spilled a lot of water on it this year in a tree watering mishap and some of the red bled. But if you tell her to prewash the fabric I would hope she would before making the skirt. Or if you use a fake tree it won't be an issue.
http://www.etsy.com/shop/NoeskeNotions
Despite the bleeding, which thankfully happened on the back of the skirt, I still love it and am happy I had her special make it. She was also incredibly fast. I had it made back when Etsy still had the alchemy function and it took her less than a month to complete it. I sure as hell know I don't finish quilting projects anywhere near that quickly 11/30/2011 9:24:48 PM |
