didn't know where to stick this, so I figured here was good

USA Today has apparently gotten drunk on UNC kool-aid

Quote :

the game was a fucking pick-em

Dixon Figuring Out New Path Premium Story

North Carolina signee Justin Dixon was informed this week that he will not be able to attend Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military Academy. Now, he is looking into other options.

“Obviously, it’s not what I wanted, but I’m waking up every morning,” Dixon said. “Everything is still great.

“Wherever I go, I’m going to ball. I love competition – I love to compete.”

Dixon, a 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker from Smithfield (N.C.) Smithfield-Selma, signed with UNC in February. After failing to qualify, he looked to prep at Hargrave. That, however, is no longer an option.

Anthony Barbour, Dixon’s high school coach, is leading the search for alternate destinations, including junior colleges and enrolling in a Division I college as a partial qualifier.

“To be honestly with you, I don’t really know right now,” Dixon said of where he’ll end up. “I have no idea. My coach is looking into some schools – we have some schools in mind right now that I might head out to. I have a few schools I’m looking at right now, but I’m going to let my coach handle everything.”

The only school Dixon has personally spoken to is East Carolina, which has offered Dixon the opportunity to enroll as a partial qualifier.

If faced with the choice between the JuCo route and enrolling at East Carolina as a partial qualifier, Dixon says he’d definitely head to ECU.

“First of all, I could start my college career – I’d just have to sit out a year,” Dixon said. “I would go ahead and be on campus [and] get my credits in. I’d come out my sophomore year (freshman on the field, but sophomore in the classroom). And I’d still have four years to play ball.”

Additionally, Dixon is turned off by the proximity of most junior colleges to his home.

“If you really ask me, [most junior colleges] are too far for me,” Dixon said. “But I’m going to let my coach handle that situation – whatever he thinks is best for me, that’s what we’re going to jump up on.”

If Dixon takes the JuCo route, he’ll be able to enroll at a Division I college after graduating with an associate’s degree.

Dixon said he hopes to have a better idea of his fall destination by the end of next week.

His coach, Anthony Barbour, was a pretty good player at State back in the day. As well as my best friend's cousin. Should have pushed him to State (and then to qualify of course)....

I think it's just worded badly. I think Dixon's GPA/SAT ended up bad enough that he could not reasonably expect to pull them up by going to a prep school.

Not that he tried to go to Hargrave and they said no.

^^ there were two really good players on that team (Smithfield Selma), Dixon and DJ Bunn, who both ended up going to the Holes. And then i see Anthony Barbour was the coach and i'm like...what gives? Those kids must have been misled as youngsters

Obviously they will be more experienced on defense, but I just don't see how everyone assumes they will "build on last year" after losing their most effective QB (it was not Yates) and top 3 and NFL-bound Wide Receivers.

I remember a thread on IC after this game stating stripping the football instead of straight tackling shouldn't be allowed.

That thread did bring the funny. Some of them were saying that it was against spirit of the game and cheapened it. To be fair though, I'm pretty sure there were multiple people saying the people against stripping the ball were being retarded sore losers.

Quote :
"North Carolina sophomore offensive tackle Carl Gaskins tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Wednesday morning's practice, and will miss the entire 2009 season, the school announced Thursday. Gaskins played in five games in 2008 and was competing for playing time this fall at left tackle.

This news comes one day after the school announced offensive lineman Kevin Bryant left the team. The Raleigh News & Observer reported that Bryant, the biggest player on UNC's roster, was charged with misdemeanor assault on a female on July 1.

The offensive line was a position of concern for the Tar Heels to begin with this summer, and it's only gotten worse as the numbers have gotten smaller. Depth is a real concern here, and Gaskins had a real shot at earning a starting job this fall. And don't forget about Aaron Stahl, a projected starter who graduated and left the team in May.

Between the lack of depth at offensive line and the inexperience at wide receiver, the Tar Heels could be off to a rocky start and will no doubt be depending heavily upon their defense.

In addition to the news about Gaskins, UNC announced senior tight end Ryan Taylor sprained the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee during Tuesday's practice. He is expected to be out of action for approximately one month.

^ 10 Total including 3 true freshmen.

I don't even think Chuck was that bad about not replenishing his offensive line, and we saw the results his shoddy patchwork of a line got us.

No wonder BD and Blake recruit so many D-linemen. They're going to need 'em all considering they'll be on the field the whole game.

Wonder if BD will take a page out of O'Brien's book and move some of the slower defensive tackles, and maybe even some of the bigger, slower d' ends, over to the O-Line. I can't see him having much of a choice at this point. Otherwise they'll have to have open tryouts and invite the fattest frat boys around.

Here's hoping Butchy boy doesn't have TOB's eye for hidden OL talent or rather the ability to make due with what you've got. I'd love absolutely nothing more than to go up by a nice margin against the holes and have Willie Young and Co. tee off on the QB all day.

Quote :
"Heels hurting on the offensive line

CHAPEL HILL -- It's not often that you hear a group of 300-pound offensive linemen called "a little thin."

But that was the only phrase that Tar Heels offensive tackle Alan Pelc could use to describe North Carolina's unit this season, which has seen its depth chart shrink uncomfortably since the start of training camp.

"A lot of people were worried about our depth for '09, and we really weren't. We knew we had guys to step up," redshirt freshman offensive lineman Jonathan Cooper said. "But then we've sort of been injury-plagued a little bit, just in the past couple days."

After losing two senior starters from last season to graduation, the Tar Heels already were seeing tight numbers before camp even started. Then Aaron Stahl decided to graduate and leave the program, foregoing a final year of eligibility.

Last week, reserve Kevin Bryant, who was charged with misdemeanor assault on a female this summer, decided not to return to the program for his sophomore season.

Most recently, sophomore Carl Gaskins tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, an injury that will sideline him the season.

The only solution with the number of available bodies dwindling, offensive line coach Sam Pittman said, is doubling roles for the remaining players.

"Obviously, our numbers dictate that we have to have several players play different positions," he said. "So we're trying to hone in on their most favorable positions and then flip them sides or flip them to guard, tackle."

But with so many freshmen, transfers from other units and other players now vying for starting time on the Tar Heels' offensive line, UNC coaches aren't sure yet what those favorable positions are.

That's where veterans such as Pelc, a junior, and seniors Lowell Dyer, a center, and tackle Kyle Jolly come in.

"You can't put any kind of importance on how critical it is for guys like Kyle Jolly to sit down and talk to some of the younger guys. I think it's unbelievably important," coach Butch Davis said. "[Young players] got guys on both sides of them who've started and who've played. Now they're quasi-coaches on the field."

Davis, who cited pass protection as "without any question" the hardest thing to learn as a young offensive lineman, said that it really all comes down to confidence, more than any fundamental or technical aspect of the play.

But with quarterback T.J. Yates missing five games last season after injuring his left ankle, the offensive line understands the stakes in protecting the passer, Pelc said.

"That makes him a little more valuable -- I don't want to say fragile -- but we've really got to take care of him," he said. "People are going to be going after him, because they know he's injury prone."

So Pelc's unit is focusing on improving its shortcomings from last season, especially improving on defending sacks, and preparing its members to play different positions.

"Coach always talks about adversity," Pelc said. "Adversity is a big part of football, and it plays more into football than pretty much all of the X's and O's.

"It's one of those things, you just kind of have to pick up and go. Put things behind you, and just start off fresh with somebody else.""

that's what Clempson was hoping for last year too.

Everyone gives BD credit for turning Miami around because they were on probation but all he did really was just recruit skill players on Track scholarships. So he was still recruiting the 'Miami' name but ive yet to see him actually coach players like he's going to have to do at UNCCH if they want to have any success and a few games last year (that Maryland game in particular) point to the kind of gameday coach he actually is

"UNC DB Merletti to miss 2009 season
Adam Powell
Rivals.com College Football Publisher

Junior defensive back Matt Merletti tears an ACL in practice Tuesday.
A native of Cleveland who attended St. Ignatius High School, Merletti played right away as a true freshman in 2007, seeing action in 10 games and registering four tackles on special teams.

In 2008, Merletti was a co-captain on special teams, an honor bestowed on UNC's top special teams players based on a point system. Merletti had 11 tackles last year and recovered two fumbles, including a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown vs. Connecticut.

One of the strongest pound-for-pound players on the entire UNC roster, Merletti recently completed 25 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press, an incredible number considering he weighs 185 pounds.

Merletti was competing for playing time at safety in training camp prior to his injury.

There's a good chance Merletti will be receiving a medical redshirt since he didn't use a redshirt as a true freshman, which means he'll still have two years of eligibility remaining starting with the 2010 season.

Nonetheless, Merletti's absence will be felt on special teams."

He'll be a RS-JR next year.

This year they're a little thin at Safety.
SR Melvin Williams
JR Searcy
JR Smith
RS-JR Deunta Williams
FR Campbell

They better hope that lineup stays healthy the rest of the year. (Although it seems that the starters at safety typically play about 90% of the snaps. Not too much need for excessive depth at that position.)

i'll take this moment and clarify. I am not happy the kid is hurt. I'd rather Toney Baker run over him on the way to the endzone and the worst that happened to him is a bruised ass ego. However, anyone who gets hurt who could potentially be on the 2-deep is something that must go published (not celebrated).
