i'm not the biggest fan of reducing comedy to rhetoric involving an essentially helpless teenager being the ass-end of a sex joke, but i don't think Letterman should be fired. if "people" didn't laugh at the shit, it would have never been a joke.

to me, its a commentary on how base we've become as people.. .errr, how base we are and have been.

we've gone from laughing at actual jokes to merely laughing like hell if someone is willing to 'go there'. it's actually kinda disgusting.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. Yeah, to some extent you could say we "encourage" going there. That doesn't mean we don't laugh at good comedy that doesn't "go there".

I know I laughed at the joke because of all the hoopla surrounding the pregnancy during the campaign, and not because "he went there". I guess I just haven't become PC enough to realize how ghastly a statement it was.

^and, yes, you're right. . .I often laugh at jokes suited for 8 year olds. BUT, I still laugh at shit that's absolutely tasteless, and at someone's expense who shouldn't even be involved.

the person within the joke was the 14 year old daughter. however, the context, I believe, was in reference to the older one. it was a dumb joke and the aftermath is ridiculous. I'm not sure if it was an honest mistake or not, but I wish everyone should shut up. palin should have just said the joke was wrong and inappropriate, letterman should have just apologized and the be done with it.

but celebrities want their names mentioned, thus we get to hear about it non-stop now.

Letterman's joke was funny in reference to the 18 year old daughter. It wasn't that funny in reference to the 14 year old daughter (who hasn't been knocked up as far as I know). I think it's logical to assume the joke was about Bristol, and not whatshername.
