lol that country loves to bet on anything...

i guess owen has no ties to anyone if he were to make this move as he goes from rival to rival to rival...

hed fill a tevez role nicely i guess if he could stay healthy, but im not counting on this move at all

maybe SkyBet reads tww

Maybe it's a trick to get Liverpool to panic and think about him scoring against them at Anfield so they'll go ahead and snatch him up real quick

how old is owen? he's still like 28-29 right? he could theoretically be great again if he would just let his body heal and/or wear suit of armor

yea he's 29. he's not the best player out there, but he'd definitely be a great option to backup rooney and berbatov. if he can stay healthy he's still a great striker. but that is a really big if

I actually agree with you guys that he's worth a gamble depending on the contract - but you know if Liverpool was considering Owen, it would be the funniest thing ever to everybody else and we'd have to listen to how stupid Benitez is and how desperate he is in the transfer market

and yes I'm aware that United may not even be considering him, I'm just saying

Would you guys be okay with the Valencia signing and nobody else? I've read that in a couple of places and I just don't think I'd be okay with Ronaldo and Tevez leaving, and all you add is Valencia. Hargreaves is back but who knows how fit he'll be... Giggs/Scholes are older... are you really that confident in Nani/Anderson to take over?

i wouldn't be totally confident with just the valencia signing. i think man utd will still be a top team but losing tevez and ronaldo is a lot more than valencia. Welbeck and Macheda might be able to fill in at striker, but I don't think they can on a consistent basis yet. I'd be happy if they signed one good striker like huntelaar and maybe a left winger, because I don't have confidence in nani yet and zoran tosic isn't ready yet. i have faith that SAF will do the right thing though.

If I were a Man U fan I would be really disappointed if they didn't sink at least 1/2 of the money received from Ronaldo back into prospects for the club. Sure, they may not need to drop that much, but the perception of them being content with what they have can't sit well with the fans after that champion's league final drubbing, losing one of the top two players in the world and Tevez leaving on bad terms with words about SAF. They don't need to go spending glacticos money but a little shakin and bakin would go a long way towards calming folks that believe Man U is being surpassed at the moment.

***Disclaimer***

I am not a man u fan and really dont care what they do. I am just commenting because that is what we do here in ST.

im fine with anderson in the middle. hes improved a lot. nani is on and off too much, but thats how c. ronaldo was when he first came to the club too, so i think nani just needs another season and maybe hell get it going.

i dont think hargreaves is slated to be fit by the start of the season so no telling when he will be back

the left side does need some shoring up. ribery would be perfect but real madrid are going insane in the market. not sure if united would take a risk on robben, another left winger...

for how much SAF tried to get huntelaar in the past, im really surprised not to see his name pop up. im hearing more rumors about sergio aguero than any other striker at the moment

I've actually read that SAF may bring Rossi back.

I am definitely not going to be ok if they only have one signing this summer. Welbeck and Macheda are not consistent enough for first team regularity.

I really hope we get that kid from Gremio, and we need another striker (2 would be better), but i honestly don't know who at this point. Benzema would've been an excellent fit. Aguero I don't know about so much. Maybe we could buy David Silva off of Valencia.

what type of forward is Rossi? I've admittedly not seen much of him in La Liga but I was always under the impression he plays more of a withdrawn forward role than an out-and-out striker.

I can't believe United hasn't made an effort to get Ribery - he seemed like the obvious choice to replace Ronaldo to me. Or at least another midfielder or winger, that's where they seem like they need to upgrade or at least get some more depth.

Ribery has recently made it clear that "it's Real or bust.

Manchester United self imposed a rule saying no big money for stars over the age of 26. Now he is only 26 so I'm not sure if he fits that criteria. I'm sure Owen doesn't count because he probably payed to be part of the club.

Anyone other than dirty red devils fans in this thread?

This is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. Why would a franchise handicap themselves in such a way? If you sign a 26 year old to a 6 year deal, at 32 they would still be on top of their game with some years left in the tank.

WTF

actually it's no stupid at all

look at Ronaldo

12 million at 18

80 million at 23

26-29 is peak age for most attacking players. If you pay some ridiculous fee (say, 60 million for Ribery) at 26, what sense does that make? It would take him a year to settle, so you don't get your full value's worth - then what if he gets hurt? so he's 27-28 before he's contributing what you expect of him at 60 million. Then his return starts to peter off, and by age 30 he's clamoring for a move to the Tottenhams or the Portsmouths because he feels like he should be getting more playing time than that 23 year old goal scoring machine that your team just brough up from the youth system. So he might push that through, at a rate of 15 million...

so you lose money on the investment over all

soup to nuts you don't get what you pay for with older players, with very few exceptions

looks like owen is probably gonna play for man utd next year as long as he passes his physical. i read that his contract is a base salary of 20k a week, so its actually really cheap. he just has a ton of performance based incentives. i think its a smart move, hes a proven backup as long as he's healthy. and he costs almost nothing if he gets hurt or doesnt play well.

im def down with that move. base salary, hell if he scores 30 goals magically im down for his incentives being through the roof cause he would have earned it...imo, thats how salaries for sports players should be.

What I am saying is that it is dumb to make blanket statements about literally a world of players. I find it funny how people get SOOOO caught up in how old a player is. Why wouldn't you look at players on a case by case situation?

Quote :
"26-29 is peak age for most attacking players"

That is purely perception. It might be the peak of their physicality but that doesn't mean that they are in their "prime" per se. Soccer is so caught up in finding "the next big thing" that is 20-21 years old that they forget about guys that can actually play. So what if a guy has lost a step in a sprint, if he is a vet and knows how to find space and finish that is more valuable that being able to run fast. The carlos tevez "hard worker" theory looks good to the fans but doesn't necessarily translate to success.

kind of weird, considering Milan made a bid for Huntelaar and most thought it would be the opposite before the transfer period started

as much as I'd love to see it, I don't think Eto'o to United will be a reality.

Huntelaar is a more likely choice, but I think MORE likely than both is the kid from Gremio.
