Tic Tacs and Cocaine: Dream Diet of Champions

Honestly, just ditch the carbs and the weight will disappear. Veggies are acceptable carbs. Drink plenty of water.

Also, as a burlesque chick, isn't it advantageous to have extra curves?

nope...sorry. i've been diagnosed hypothyroid since i was 14. once you gain the weight, you have to work three times as hard to lose it or tone up. the medicine itself will not shed the pounds. talk with your doctor.

agreed. i don't think i'm fat, but the difficulty hypothyroidism can cause of losing weight i know is very frustrasting (and very real).

so is the hair loss part :/ which if you start noticing that, i recommend taking biotin daily.

i also take One a Day weight loss directed vitamins and vitamin b to help boost metabolism. it could all be in my head, but i think it helps on top of a better diet and exercise.

Honestly, get a prescription for Ritalin or Adderall. The weight will come off, I promise.

Keep in mind, there are health risks associated with both medications.

I'm curious about this hypothyroidism. I mean, if you don't take in more calories than you burn how can you not drop weight?

hypothyroidism...not hyper. hypo you gain weight, hyper you lose weight.

the thyroid controls your hormones and metabolism. taking thyroid medicine supplements the hormone, but it's never as good as the real thing. so say you gained a bunch of weight before you were diagnosed, but then once you were you expect it to fall right off. not gonna happen. your metabolic point has probably changed while your hormones were off, and so even if you do burn more calories than you intake, you still may not lose the weight. you can also become insulin resistant.

how is that even possible? i'm not being sarcastic, i just don't get how you can keep or gain weight when you're burning MORE than you take in

this is all based on just starting out trying to lose weight now. i should've said that. you know the typical start of exercising--"oh i started eating right an exercising and the weight just FELL off...i lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks!! YAY!"

but then you're in week three, 4, and the 2nd month and it seems like all the weight loss has just stopped?

getting that first kick start of losing weight is what's much harder for those with hypothyroidism b/c our metabolism is so out of whack. i'm not saying it's impossible, it's just harder to get that first 10 pounds off, and then keep seeing the results. you REALLY have to work at it on top of taking your meds regularly.

I understand. that's a bitch. shit, its hard enough to find time to work out and lose weight when you have a full time job (and social life) without metabolic disorders.

the thing people forget is that some people with hypothyroidism suffer from extreme fatigue and joint pain.

i get so frustrated when people have the whole attitude that everyone else is lazy without knowing the whole picture.

Yeah, I gained 25 pounds before I was diagnosed so I have that to lose. I've lost about 5 pounds in a few weeks, not excercising because I hurt my back and I have concussion

The pics of the girl above - The stuffed toy ruins it for me...and her face doesn't turn me on either.

Rachel, You're very beautiful and I cannot tell you have gained 25 pounds. You actually look more like a pin up now than you did before, to me at least. And since hypothyroidism also causes depression, the last thing I would do is listen to what the fools on TWW have to say. You're lovely and very talented and although it is wonderful you are trying to stay in shape, keep in mind that you should be working toward the goal of happiness as much as you are working toward the goal of weight loss.

That's not necessarily true. If you can find a doctor that's willing to prescribe you T3 containing drugs at a reasonable dosage, then the thyroid medicine circumvents the thryoid and actually makes your metabolism faster than the thyroid would naturally be. Unfortunately, most doctors are scared of T3 and would rather prescribe T4. T4 drugs still suppress TSH and shut down the thyroid, but the T4 has to be converted into T3 in the body before it becomes an active hormone for increasing your metabolism. T4 does not convert to T3 all that well either, so the body doesn't get as much T3 as it would with a healthy thyroid or if you were to just take T3 to begin with. T4 drugs usually result in a chronic state of hypothyroidism that is marginally better than taking no thyroid medicine at all.

taking high doses of T3 containing drugs like cytomel can cause ridiculous weight loss in a short amount of time. It's also rough on your heart and internal organs, which is probably why doctors are afraid to prescribe it.

[Edited on July 2, 2009 at 6:46 PM. Reason : T3 at normal doses is safe, but handing a drug with kind of abuse potential to a dieter is dangerous]

Hmmmm interesting John...I'll have to talk to my doc about that at my next checkup. I take a low doasage already, and have done pretty well with my management thus far, but would be interested to see his take on it. I'm definitely ok with my weight, but when I do fluctuate it is frustrating to get back where I like to be.

And one thing that I didn't know, but now that I'm getting around that time that I'm thinking about my health, is the precautions and extra monitoring I'll need if I become pregnant...do you know if there's any health risks for t3 versus t4 associated with pregnancy?

Armour is a good product. If you're taking synthroid or levoxyl and still feel slightly hypo, your body may not be able to convert T4 into T3 very well and may be better served by a combination drug.

[Edited on July 2, 2009 at 9:13 PM. Reason : you better ask your doctor for advice on taking those medications while pregnant.]

thank you. i was dealing with the depression part of it....cutting myself and whatnot. once i got on the medicine i felt MUCH better.

now though i am leaning towards hyperthyroidism in my bloodtests and feel all restless...both my great-grandma's, my grandma, and my mom have hypo so t.hey are constantly having to change their dosages because their levels are changing. i think it's the same with me
