$50k
$1k a month housing allowance
$300 car payment
free gas for the car, howevermuch he used
$100 utilities for the house
Full health insurance coverage for the guy and his wife (it usually costs $200 a month minimum to add a spouse to your policy)

That's $50k a year and over $20k in untaxed benefits beyond what any normal employee would get. Guy was fresh out of school with his master's.

You should go into religion because you want to and don't mind the sacrifice, not because it's the best fucking paying job you can get. And my parents wonder why I don't put up with the bullshit they do.

I believe what I believe and I don't need to justify it for anyone, that's between me and God.
Its people like that, that I pray for.

What a selfish cunt.

BTW, preachers probably put in a lot more than 40 hours and deal with some heinous shit. They have to go deal with people who have lost loved ones, who are on their final deathbeds, people who are emotionally and mentally distressed at all hours of the day and night. They have a whole congregation looking up to them and they are scrutinized to a huge degree. They can't go out and drink, can't get away with being an ass to somebody, etc. etc. I don't always agree with a preachers message, but they deal with some shit that would make me put a gun in my mouth. I don't agree with the likes of Joel Osteen having a fucking jet and all that shit, but I think an average hardworking preacher earns their salary.

Hell my preacher is a farmer by trade who came to the pulpit later in life. He's not a master theologian or anything, but he preaches from the heart and has a good message. Aside from his railing against alcohol at times (stupid Baptists) he's a good preacher who gets a few bucks, but can do without it. I personally have mad respect for anybody like that who can afford to not make a penny doing it and would continue to do it anyways.

I'm not sure that raising children to be christian is such a bad thing. Eventually they will figure it out on their own, anyway.

I think that a child should have a say in whether they are homeschooled or taken to a public school, though.

lol

I've never been in a church where the pastor got any benefits - then again I grew up in small non-denominational churches.

i could see paying someone 50k for the overall management of a church with a decent amount of members. All of the ministers I know have always spent the majority of their time being a minister. constantly doing something for the church, visiting the sick and shut in, studying, meetings, heading development of the church. Never actually off duty.

those are the good preachers ofcourse. i have known of some who take advantage and run a church into the ground.

Taking Science on Faith

Randy, you have consistently brought win to this thread. <3
And Nighthawk, excellent post. <3

Just b/c someone is "fresh" out of grad school doesn't mean they should be stuck with $25-30k. Being a man/woman of the cloth is hard every day. It breaks you down and builds you back up. Your faith is tested every day as you try your damndest to help others. I'm sorry, but you can't say that about many other jobs.
Maybe teaching or psychiatry. And I think teachers should make more -- but that's another topic.

rofl, from the link that hooksaw posted:

"Therefore, to be a scientist, you had to have faith that the universe is governed by dependable, immutable, absolute, universal, mathematical laws of an unspecified origin. You’ve got to believe that these laws won’t fail, that we won’t wake up tomorrow to find heat flowing from cold to hot, or the speed of light changing by the hour."

ahahah i'm sure this guy felt clever as he wrote this utter horseshit

edit: holy fuck what a complete facepalm. this was in the NYT? it would get a C in a philosophy course at a decent university. lolz

Pastors work hard it seems, when it comes to actually dealing with the congregation

They're still essentially paid to know about made up shit, though
