a group of churches created during the prohibition era to address alcohol policy
I've been telling people this shit forever, but they refuse to listen - the current ABC laws are nothing but holdovers from prohibition due to right wing Christians.
If there are no other reasons to have the ABC laws and government agency, other than religious belief, then they are unconstitutional. And I mean reason, aka facts, aka scientifically proven reasons. Not ABC commissioner "reasons".

Wal-Mart Liquor
(I LOVE the drink machines next to the door. Airplane bottle + 20oz drink = profit)]

Wilmington, N.C. — A contractor who built four stores for the New Hanover Alcohol Beverage Control board faces federal charges of mail fraud.
Wilmington general contractor Lee F. Cowper is accused of padding an order for the Porter's Neck ABC liquor store with an extra $43,000.
Investigators said that Cowper was owed that amount after building a garage at the home of former ABC administrator Billy Williams.
Cowper will be arraigned in federal court Monday.
Both he and Williams have both denied wrongdoing in reports by the Wilmington StarNews." |

I understand the argument that ABC laws and simply backwards laws divorced from modern reality.
But isn't it also true that we can't really separate high alcohol drinks from just plain recreational drugs? At least low alcohol beer can be roughly equated to tobacco and caffeine in that the most severe legal high you can get really isn't all that bad. Granted, there is no line between weak drugs and hard drugs, there are only weaker ones and harder ones.
Asking for a rationale for the nation's alcohol and drug laws (why do we have to say both alcohol and drugs again?) is clearly too much. They are a product of history, not a product of thinking. But all I'm trying to claim is that in a system as no one claims is any more than nonsense, there's no point arguing that it makes sense for us to remove our arbitrary laws on hard drinks. Making sense never had much to do with our laws. 1/22/2011 10:51:12 PM |

they need to cut admin staff and admin staff salary, not tons but somewhat. they obviously aren't making a profit. why should they continue to reap benefits? 1/24/2011 3:22:17 AM |

I'm in favor of the state government getting out of the business of prohibition.
Could someone please attempt to explain to me why Christians are so opposed to the imbibing of alcohol? If Jesus turned water into wine, what's the big deal? Obviously I'm being slightly facetious here, but where's the scriptural basis for prohibition? I asked this of an on-fire member of the church at work the other day who doesn't drink and he spouted the body is a temple line while gorging himself on two hash browns and an egg mcmuffin and drinking a coke. 1/24/2011 6:56:50 AM |
