Quote :
"I don't see how people can criticize the referees and not support retroactive punishments/bans for cheating. You have people out there who are deliberately duping the referees for their own benefit. It's possible to see some of those things happening as they happen, but it still works enough that it's worth doing.

If you have retroactive punishments and that are reviewable after the game is over, you virtually eliminate this element from the game (which is arguably the most destructive and unfavorable aspect of the sport). No matter how you look at this, it's cheating. It's deliberately deceiving the official. Just because you get away with it does not make it alright but that's the message that we're currently sending to players."

That's part of the game, man. Everyone who has played soccer at least at a somewhat competitive level knows that what kind of officials you get is almost as important as the team you play. Is he going to allow for even-handed aggressive play? Is he going to call everything? Is there anything you can get away with?

I was goalkeeping for my indoor team last week. The opposing team was taking a direct free kick. Some chucklefuck decided to stand directly in front of me to block my view. When I knew the referee was looking at the kicker and not in our direction, I literally shoved the guy as hard as I could to get him out of the way just before the kick was taken. Was it a card-worthy foul? Obviously. Did I get carded? No. The ref's attention was diverted, and I got away with it. It's the same with jersey-pulling, tripping, trash-talking, and anything else that people do when the ref's not looking. It's part of the game. You see what you can try to get away with. If they had review after the game, then none of that could happen anymore. You'd have people getting retroactive yellow cards for the jersey-pulling they did in the 65th minute while the ball was halfway across the field.

EDIT: I should mention that I'm not criticizing the referees for that debacle.

Yeah man, it's totally appropriate to get violent with someone in a game that means absolutely nothing because you can.

It wasn't violent. It just cleared him out of the way and let him know that he shouldn't try standing there in the future.

Wait, are there multiple Men's league teams on TWW? I'm looking for one. I've been playing Co-ed for the past 3 years and it's just not enough competition for me. Anyone wanna give me a try-out? I promise I don't suck and I'm really cool IRL

god damn it where were you motherfuckers this past season when we were struggling to find subs?

Cody (d7freestyler) and I play for the Hibernian in TASL Men's C for outdoor, and we'll have two Men's B league indoor teams this coming season at NetSports in Cary.

The indoor teams are full as it stands right now, but if you're legitimately interested in joining us for outdoor in the spring I'll talk to the powers that be and see if we can have tryouts or whatever.

Fair warning: we need PURE strikers and PURE defenders. If you come out and say "hey, I'm a CM," chances are we ain't got time for ya. We have a team of 17+ midfielders right now.

I'll play for you.

Goalkeep and PURE Defender here. I'm the "hey I intentionally sent you into the sidewall" type of player, so if that's what you need, let me know.

I'm currently on the COED B league on Bestardi Senzia Gloria.

^^ btw, Gabe broke his nose last night going for a header. montero played goal.... you could definitely tell he was rusty. we were down 3-0 after 4 minutes.

but yeah, Hibernian definitely needs defenders. and a reliable, good keeper.

^damnnnnn playa. He gonna have to pull a Rip Hamilton and wear a mask? I'm pretty sure Austin is gonna be our keeper for the spring, the way Dave keeps talking about it. Chip'll be backup. That is, unless God here wants to play too?

God how good are you are slide tackling? There was a conspicuous absence of that from most of our defenders this past outdoor season.

I play defense (and midfield). I'm a terrible striker though, I won't even lie. I just don't know if I'm big enough to play center back. I played it in Co-ed and I was usually really dominant, but Men's League at any level is going to be way different I would think. I think I would mop up at right back though. Left back would give me a little trouble just because I'm not left-footed but I might could make do there.

I can do it. Honestly, I usually just shoulder-check to get position on the ball instead of slide tackling, because it's a challenge that's really a "last resort." If you miss the tackle you're fucked.

^^^ a lack of slide tackling from everyone but me.

^^ we could definitely use more defenders, so if you think you can hang (which if you've been playing a while, you should be fine) you are more than welcome to give it a shot.

"Pot 1 (seeds)
South Africa, Germany, Brazil, Italy, Spain, England, Holland, Argentina.

Pot 2 (Asia, Oceania and North/Central America)
Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Mexico, Honduras.

Pot 3 (Africa and South America)
Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Algeria, Paraguay, Chile, Uruguay.

Pot 4 (Europe)
France, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, Greece, Serbia, Denmark, Slovakia. "

Here are the pots. Only surprise (honestly not all that surprising) is Holland over France as a seed. And the US is with Asia as expected which means a very hard draw is coming. Obviously the best case scenario is if we can avoid Ivory Coast/Ghana in Pot 3 and France/Portugal in Pot 4.

I'll be satisfied if we can find a way to get out of the group stage, which may not be remarkable but it's still an accomplishment.

Let's just ignore the #1 seeds for a moment and mark it up as an L (even though we did steal a point from the eventual champions in '06) - we just need to hope for a team we could possibly get three points from and somebody we can draw. Personally, I'd like to avoid all African teams at all cost even if they're not as talented as the South American teams because I feel like they'd have a huge home field advantage even from South African fans. Is it impossible to get a point from any of those South American teams? I don't think so. And if we can get somebody like Switzerland, Greece, or Slovenia from Pot 4, 3 points isn't completely out of the question.

Basically, I'm used to getting my hopes up and then having them crushed as a sports fan so I will not do any different for this World Cup.

^ lol, forget about us... how pissed would Brazil be with that draw?
