if gottfried was a decent coach, brown and leslie would still be on the team. Any casual basketball fan could see with certainty that they weren't ready.
He was so bad that half of the team just basically quit. 10/29/2013 2:08:32 AM |

Hickson was a Herb recruit? You sure about that?
And guys, what if Leslie was just overrated and not a great basketball player? He had a lot of physical tools and potential, but it's entirely possible that was just an athlete who was kinda good at basketball but not great. And Brown was a good college player, but that doesn't necessarily translate into an NBA career. Neither would've benefited much from am extra year of college...they seemed to have reached their ceiling already. 10/29/2013 8:24:09 AM |

E man is fucking idiot. Brown had to go as he was getting old in terms of NBA rookie age. Gottfried manage to get CJL to stay for his junior season. It was a given that he was going pro after last year regardless. Nothing Gottfried could have done to stop either player so quit bitching like a UNC fan.
If you want to criticize Gottfried, criticize him for not helping either player develop much year 1 and year 2 of his time, criticize him for not coaching defense well, criticize him for not building better team chemistry. 10/29/2013 10:26:50 AM |

Quote : | "NBA fate of Leslie, Brown may just be a bump in the road Bret Strelow
The NBA's regular season starts tonight, and the only active player in the league from N.C. State is J.J. Hickson.
The absence of C.J. Leslie and Lorenzo Brown doesn't mean they shouldn't have left school a year early.
Brown, a second-round pick of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Leslie, who signed with the New York Knicks as an undrafted rookie, were waived Friday. They were supposed to lead N.C. State to greater heights as juniors, but a team picked to win the ACC tied for fourth and lost its NCAA tournament opener. The disappointment continued on draft night, when Brown was the lone Wolfpack alum selected from a pool of four.
Scott Wood has signed to play in Spain, and it's a credit to undersized power forward Richard Howell that he received a training camp invitation from the Portland Trail Blazers, who waived him early last week. Brown and Leslie, on the other hand, had realistic hopes of opening the season on an NBA roster.
Brown had the bad luck of joining a team that didn't need a point guard, and Minnesota's final roster includes Ricky Rubio, J.J. Barea and A.J. Price.
There's at least a chance Brown catches on with another team. Philadelphia is a decent fit, and not just because the 76ers could set records for futility this season.
Word is that the Knicks, who had the No. 24 overall pick and no second-round selection in this year's draft, really liked Tim Hardaway Jr., Reggie Bullock and Leslie. They chose Hardaway and later signed Leslie to a contract that reportedly guaranteed him close to $200,000. He totaled 12 points and seven rebounds in five preseason appearances. Don't blame early entry
Would staying in school another season have helped Brown and Leslie improve their draft stock, enabling them to gain financial security as first-round picks with guaranteed contracts? That's a popular refrain, but it's just not true, especially when you consider the strength of the 2014 draft compared to this year's relatively weak one.
After three seasons at N.C. State, it's pretty clear what the two players were and what they weren't. Most conversations about the Wolfpack included talk of how talented the team was, but that talent was overvalued. Brown looks the part as a 6-foot-5 point guard, but he has obvious flaws, notably his shooting ability and ball-handling. Leslie is often engaged in a personal tug of war, with poor effort and a bad attitude overshadowing his elite athleticism.
Brown is already 23 - he spent a postgraduate year at Hargrave Military Academy - so it's understandable why he felt compelled to begin his professional career. If anything, Leslie left college a year too late, not too early. His inspired play fueled N.C. State's run to the Sweet 16 in 2012, and the image of him hugging athletics director Debbie Yow after the NCAA tournament win against Georgetown put a feel-good touch to the story.
If NBA teams were going to take a first-round flyer on a 6-9 tweener, they were going to do it last summer, before giving Leslie another full year to behave and perform without incident. The uplifting tale of N.C. State upsetting Duke and Leslie rescuing Will Privette from danger turned into an afterthought once a sulking, turnover-prone Leslie played poorly in an ugly loss at North Carolina. Tough odds
By sheer numbers alone, making a roster in the NBA is more difficult than in the NFL or Major League Baseball. Playing professionally overseas or in the NBA Developmental League shouldn't be considered a failure, and those were potential destinations for Leslie and Brown regardless of when they turned pro.
Another year at N.C. State wasn't going to drastically change that, and at least they can start earning a professional salary sooner rather than later.
Leslie and Brown could very well end up on an NBA team in the future, but the fact that they aren't on one now has little to do with when they decided to leave college. Staff writer Bret Strelow can be reached at strelowb@fayobserver.com or 486-3513." |

What if your future looked bleak. Its tough being a professional basketball player. And even more tough when basketball takes up all your time in college and you end up having no time to pursue an education and/or end up getting a useless degree anyway. Being a student athlete in a revenue sport is a full time job. It is high time for an NCAA reform. But I digress. Sorry....

article is dumb. becoming a better basketball player is never going to hurt you. this logic was to give up on ever being good and try to trick the nba into drafting you with a lotto pick and it didn't work because scouts watch the games. some guys join the nba in their late 20s and end up making teams.
it can never hurt to get better. regardless of who is in that class. 10/29/2013 9:09:55 PM |

Quote : | "PHILADELPHIA, PA. – NOVEMBER 20, 2013 – The Philadelphia 76ers today announced that they have signed free agent guards Elliot Williams and Lorenzo Brown. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Williams (6-5, 190) was an early entry candidate for the 2010 NBA Draft following his sophomore season at Memphis and was selected with the 22nd overall pick by Portland. He played his freshman season at Duke. Williams appeared in 24 games for the Trail Blazers in 2011-12 and saw action in six games for Cleveland this preseason.
Brown (6-5, 186) was an early entry candidate for the 2013 NBA Draft following his junior season at N.C. State and was selected with the 52nd overall pick by Minnesota. He participated for the Timberwolves in both the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and in the preseason. Brown started 95 of his 101 games played with the Wolfpack and was named Second Team All-ACC as a junior and Third Team as a sophomore.
In a related move, the Sixers have waived Kwame Brown and Darius Morris." |

All these guys would significantly increase their chances if they could shoot 3s.
Shooting is the great equalizer in basketball. If you are slow, short, skinny, or unathletic, learn to shoot.
Every team needs cheap guys who can hit open 3s when the stars collapse a defense. 1/1/2014 1:07:56 PM |

Hahaha forgot there was a team called the D-Fenders. Very glad I wikipedia-ed the origin of the name:
Quote : | "The team name was chosen in a "name the team" contest with an interesting format. Similar to a March Madness NCAA tournament bracket, beginning in April 2006, the Los Angeles Lakers' web-site featured 64 possible team names. By the first week of June 2006, the choices were whittled down to two: only the "D-Fenders" and the "Breakers" remained. On June 5, 2006, balloting was closed with the "Breakers" as the winner. Three days later the team was expected to announce its new name, the "Los Angeles Breakers" but did not do so. While the name "Breakers" had won the poll, the Lakers organization had learned that a local coed dwarf basketball team already had the same name in use.[3] The Lakers then fell back to the "losing" name: the Los Angeles D-Fenders. The official announcement and logo unveiling came on July 26, 2006.[4]" |
