Ahmet All American 4279 Posts user info edit post |
The problem is not buying a GTI and V70R at the same time, the (financial) constraint lies w/the 911 which is roughly the cost of an EVO + V70R. I have not forgotten my insane turbo BMW wishes, nor a race car. Street cars I can get out of w/out loosing money, track cars or stupid modified vehicles don't seem to be as easy. Anyway, I have decided to buy a particular GTI already, the guy was supposed to produce the title last Friday, he couldn't, promised for tomorrow. If he delivers, I'll buy it. Man, it's been 10 years or so since I've had a VW, I'm kind of excited, those cars are so fun!
Anyway, part of the stress/push comes form Callahan coming next week to visit, and I want him to have a car to drive @VIR as I drove Laguna Seca in one of his cars... Even if I buy the GTI, it wouldn't be intended for track use, certainly not in a week. The V70R or EVO can be ready w/a set of tires, a flash and some brake pads though, and I'm looking at track ready 911s (the one from page 2 is getting a very serious consideration in particular, it's already well set up at a seemingly good price). I'm going to look at a V70R Thursday, but I've told myself I'm not spending $10k + on a car before the 911 leaves.
PS: The plate SAFTY1ST is not taken, and I will register the V70R w/it if I buy it. This is no empty threat, I've got NINJA, ///MEH and HIOFFICR under my belt. 6/2/2010 1:24:33 AM |

I drove a friend's near-mint condition 6 speed S60R a couple of weeks back... damn that thing is a beast!
The transmission was fun to shift, the acceleration was murderous, and the sound of the engine was a blast.
And the interior is one of the best I have ever seen.
He is selling it for quite cheap, but I am not rich enough to afford the maintenance/repair costs on car that like that 6/2/2010 8:08:16 PM |
dubcaps All American 4765 Posts user info edit post |
^i think maintenance/repair costs are one of those things that's overly hyped on the internet. it seems like the people that have issues are the ones that think clutch drops from 6k are a good idea. that being said, i've replaced just as many slave cylinders/angle gears as tyler and ahmet have replaced IMS/RMS.
the seats on the s60r are fantastic, as are the brakes. they also seem to respond very well to being tuned. overall i think the car was very well thought out. 6/2/2010 8:39:40 PM |
Ahmet All American 4279 Posts user info edit post |
The car is fantastic all around, but it's heavy as hell with non linear power delivery.
Complex doesn't have to mean unreliable, heavy doesn't have to mean boring, but we're working with a front heavy AWD, turbocharged, electronically damped, stability controlled 3700+lbs vehicle here. My big turn offs are the muddy steering and imprecise (unpredictable ramp up and immediate cut off) throttle. However, the absurdity of just what that car is, a hugely capable, yet practical and unassuming Volvo, well, I'm going to check one out tomorrow.
Also, title was obtained today, and thus I have this:
It looks a bit low in the rear? Well that's not just cause it's been lowered, there's an extra 16valve engine sitting in there with forged internals, piston squirters, etc. 6/3/2010 12:49:37 AM |
0EPII1 All American 42541 Posts user info edit post |
^ its got two motors? so what are the numbers on that car?
Quote : | "^i think maintenance/repair costs are one of those things that's overly hyped on the internet." |
all i know is that dude is selling the car for $13,333 (and possibly will bring it to $12,000 just for me), but the maintenance cost is $1,200 every 10,000 km.
so that is quite ridiculous.
(i am not in the US, so whatever you are saying about costs does not apply to my case)
the other thing is, the roads here are quite bad, so that would mean changing tires regularly, and the front very low air dam getting damaged frequently. another friend who has the S60R has had to replace the lower air dam 3 times in one year. that can't be cheap.6/4/2010 4:31:14 AM |

Nice! I'm going to thread jack for a post or two since there seems to be a good collection of people interested in cars besides the wrx or 3-series all the time. I've got about 20k and need something with a warranty -- used 2010 GTI, 08 A3, 06 350z (no warranty and I'd have to keep my beater for the winters)? Ive got a golf now and I have been trying to get away from VW hatches for a long time, but, it feels the best. 6/4/2010 8:10:03 AM |

^you wouldn't need a beater for the winters. You can just buy another set of wheels with snow (or heavy duty all season) tires. Surely an extra set of wheels & tires is cheaper than keeping a beater maintained and insured. 6/4/2010 8:59:28 AM |

Yeah? I've only ever had AWD and FWD cars, so I think Ive been somewhat sucked into the stigmata that RWD, especially powerful RWD, cars essentially just spin in circles to some degree. I'm up in Cleveland so theres a fair amount of snow for 3 months of the year, usually between 2 inches and 2 feet at times. Just not sure I want to deal with that RWD power in the snow, but, I'm not going off personal experience by any means. 6/4/2010 9:49:28 AM |
TKE-Teg All American 43410 Posts user info edit post |
I can't speak from personal experience but with a set of blizzak's you should be fine on snow. Of course you'll have ground clearance issues with the snow if its deep and not plowed. I know plenty of people that live in the North and mountains that daily drive their S2000s through the snow in the wintertime with dedicated snow tires. 6/4/2010 10:47:24 AM |

RE: 335i, I wouldn't buy anything w/a slushbox, just couldn't stand it. The 335 is a bit too over complicated/heavy for my taste regardless. For both of you, I think the Audi A3 is a better choice, DSG is an amazing transmission that transforms the car.
As for driving an S2k in the snow, yeah screw that, despite the fact that I'm sure with actual snow tires they'd be doable.
I will also say this, as much as I love RWD in low traction situations, there are times when AWD would come in handy but I imagine that's rare. Cue Mark, when we were in DC and made it through everything on a set of Blizzaks when snow plows were getting stuck in a state of emergency!
In other news, I retrofitted A/C in the GTI!!1 6/5/2010 1:11:47 AM |

^ I'm going to check out a G37 Sedan later today... I don't know, the Audi lineup just doesn't do anything for me outside the sex appeal. I should re-evaluate it since I know there's more to a vehicle's dynamics than what is written on paper. 6/5/2010 4:57:45 AM |
Ahmet All American 4279 Posts user info edit post |
You should drive an A3 w/DSG. I would never in a million years consider an A3 otherwise, personally. It's a very nice, fun to drive car that's modern, precise, nimble, etc. and not boring.
I would not buy (and never have) a car with a torque converter, period. Of all the cars that have either manual transmissions with electronically controlled clutches, or double clutch transmissions, the A3 is going to be one of the cheapest available today (other VW offerings may be in the same range, as would the e46 M3), and also probably the best all around one. 6/5/2010 4:18:25 PM |

There was a car parked on the line on their side. I assume they parked that way because they wanted to be able to exit the car. The considerate thing to do would've been to just park in a different spot...
