Do you think democrats will be whining about the filibuster when they don't own the house and senate next year?

Of course they will. All the more reason to reform that shit now.

That's not a bad point. If you really think the GOP is heading for a big take over, you should be backing the filibuster reform idea. Because after the way the GOP have abused it for the past year, if that gridlock causes the dems to end up in the minority they're going to be looking for some payback.

How have they abused it? IT was only last month the GOP got a 41st vote in the senate. It's the democrats that have been standing in Obama's way.

^^So your complaint is that the democratic party is too diverse, and they need to be more monolithic like the nay-saying GOP?

This is Obama's fault. Dems should stop whining/claiming abuse and and ask the messiah for a beer summit with Republicans.

"STORY HIGHLIGHTS

* In usual legislative process, Senate must pass a bill with 60 votes or more"

I just saw this on a story on CNN. It is kind of sad that it is now so accepted that we aren't a majority rule country, but a supermajority rule country.

No, the Senate is a supermajority rule. The country is an extreme minority rule. Remember, the Senate often passes bills with 60+ votes that polls suggest an overwhelming majority of the country are against.

For those who embrace filibuster as a viable senate procedure to use all the time, but reject reconciliation as senate procedure to use once, you might enjoy this video that talks about its history being used on closely divided issues and not closely divided ones, on its history being used on health care related issues, and its history being used as a way to pass tax cuts for the wealthy.

"The Filibuster Follies: Fact, Fiction, and Futility
Perhaps the American public is becoming as tired of the Republican filibusters as Senator Harry Reid (D-NV)? A February 5-11 poll by CBS/NYT reported 50% of our population saying No to more filibusters, 44% in favor of supporting the filibuster rule. Independents split on the question: 46% keep the filibuster rule in place, 49% saying it should be changed. [TPM]

The conflict over the use of the filibuster is a matter of whose ox is being gored. During the Bush Administration supporters of the President decried the use of the filibuster by Democratic colleagues in the Senate as "obstructionist." However, with a Democrat in the White House we are no longer hearing "The President Deserves To Have His Own Nominees," or "Upper'Down Vote" from the GOP members. The number of filibusters in the Senate skyrocketed during the 110th Session after Democrats won a majority and the GOP locked into a strategy of filibustering everything in sight. [McClatchy] Prior to the 110th Congress, the record number of cloture motions filed to break a filibuster was 82, during the 104th Congress. [Senate]

Some numbers might be instructive:
108th Session: 62 filibusters, 49 cloture votes, 12 cloture votes successful
109th Session: 68 filibusters, 54 cloture votes, 34 cloture votes successful
110th Session: 139 filibusters, 112 cloture votes, 61 cloture votes successful
111th Session: (to date) 74 filibusters filed, 42 cloture votes, 38 cloture votes successful

I'm glad the GOP is reserving the filibuster for when it's really important.

The senate majority leader can always require a traditional filibuster forcing minority senators to stay on the floor to keep it going.

Although I still think the democrats are whiners, the GOP needs to admit they lost last fall..and that means the other side gets to have their way for awhile. Hopefully all of the 'progressive' badness can be reversed with a change in congress this fall.

hah.. sorry for any confusion.

I am in favor of filibusters, but I think the ruling party should make the other side work hard to carry one out. If putting on a filibuster is physically painful, you won't see as many of them from today's lazy politicians.

Now along with that, I am in favor of any politician or party blocking pres. Obama's agenda of more gov't control and over-spending. I sort of prefer a deadlocked gov't that can't screw up too much of our lives. Clinton got blow-jobs during his deadlock time, I wonder what Obama will do during his?
