I read in TV Guide that John Cena won the role.

Sam Worthington considers himself a blockbuster movie star. He would never go for this.

I'm the new Spartacus, bitches. Kinda like when the Ultimate Warrior died and they found a new Ultimate Warrior to take the old Ultimate Warrior's place. You got a problem with that?

well considering the casting call requires a natural born british accent I think we can rest easy that John Cena will not be Spartacus.

naturally, since all Romans speak with a British accent.

what a retarded thing to require.

True. I thought it was kinda hokey when I first started watching it. But the it becomes legendary by the finale.

the first thing i noticed was "darken rahl" from "legend of the seeker"

second was that episode 1 was kind of hokey (but then again, i watched "legend of the seeker" so obviously i have no problem watching hokey tv, hah)...now that i'm on episode 5 i can honestly say that it's really good

sometimes the blood effects are pointless...not in an i-don't-like-gratuitous-violence kind of way, but in a that's-not-realistic-at-all kind of way...i think they've refined it with each episode, though, so it bothers me less than it did

just catching up with the thread, i'm all that whitfield is being replaced, but i'd rather give a chance to a new spartacus in season 2 rather than see is dumped altogether

looks like jaime murray (lila from season 2 of dexter) will be in the prequel (spartacus: gods of the arena)

season 1 wraps so perfectly that I wouldn't be upset if the show stopped. By the end they were hitting everything in full stride. I just remember being jaw-dropped the entire finale. I can understand new viewers not minding AW being replaced since they are knowing about it going in. For me it's been a waiting game and watching him battle back from cancer and the show coming off hiatus only to see it all unfold again. So it kinda bums me out. I just hope they don't rush finding a new actor and find someone who can keep up the intensity

Yeah, Crixus starting getting cool only after he was knocked down a few pegs. A prequel featuring his rise would suck.

Have it be about Lucretia and how she spent her early years as a a warrior in a quest to seek redemption for her past sins as a ruthless warlord by using her formidable fighting skills to help people.

They finally put this back onto Starz on demand (in HD no less!)

I can finally finish up the season now. I am on episode 8 right now. It is going to be weird to see the new season without whitfield playing the title character. When does that start back (I didn't want to read through this tread for fear of spoilers)

It isn't as far as I still know.

They are having a 6 episode prequel season or something soon.

But they were still deciding whether to recast Spartacus or just drop the entire franchise all together.

Quote :
"After an exhaustive search, Starz has officially tapped Aussie actor Liam McIntyre (HBO’s The Pacific) to replace the ailing Andy Whitfield as the new star of Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

The news comes a week after TVLine reported that McIntyre was the odds-on favorite to score the plum role.

“Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead Spartacus forward,” said Starz CEO Chris Albrecht in a statement. “It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he’s dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going.”

In the release put out by Starz, the network referred to the “grueling and rigorous audition process” that McIntyre went through to claim the title role — and they’re not exaggerating. According to sources, McIntyre — whose slight build initially led execs to rule him out as Sparty — underwent two-plus months of boot camp to bulk up for the part.

In September, news broke that Whitfield was dropping out of Spartacus‘ second season to undergo treatment for a recurrence of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Starz debated whether to end the series or embark on the daunting task of recasting the lead. With Whitfield’s blessing in hand, the network ultimately decided the show must go on.

McIntyre assumes the role at the start of the show’s second season, which begins shooting later this spring.

In the meantime, fans can get their Sparty fix with Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, a six-part prequel debuting this Friday at 10 pm/ET.

"

i'm more ok with this than i originally thought i would be. So much time will have passed between seasons 1 and 2 that i'll sadly all but forget about Whitfield's Spartacus.

I can see it, but I don't think I'll forget Whitfield. I'm sure after the first couple eps of season 2 though I'll make the adjustment.

I don't know how I feel about this re-cast either. I don't want to forget Whitfield as the title role, but I, too, will probably adjust a few episodes into the next season because I want to love this show regardless.

^ According to IMDB he played Lew in the episode called "Iwo Jima." But I agree, I've seen The Pacific too and didn't recognize the actor's name or face.

The pacific was boring and most of the characters were generic, so taht's understandable.

I'm glad to hear that they finally re-cast Spartacus, and didn't cancel altogether. They had me worried there for a little while. I'm also glad that they didn't pick that dude from Prison Break.

I will watch the prequel, but it's a shame that we have to wait so long for season 2.

So I watched the first episode on netflix and cut it off 10 minutes in. One of my friends loves this show and told me to try it again. Does the dialogue and shitty acting ever improve? I'm assuming the story just gets really good so you look past it. Do you think I will like episode 2 better?

Gratutious sex scenes kinda got old after internet pr0n.

Amazing what some makeup and a facelift can do for actors these days. Batiatus, Lucretia, Ashur, Crixus, Solonius and the like all looked several years younger.

Not going to lie, but the show made me interested enough to go and read the Wiki on Spartacus. Interesting to hear some of the related stories and see how far out they go past the revolt.
