plenty of places for red drum around harker's island, beaufort, and radio island. you could try the north river marshes and newport marshes (haystacks) for starters. be careful because these places run out of water at low tide and you'll end up stuck for several hours waiting on the tide.

no, i cannot run a charter since i'm not licensed. i don't fish for trout, drum, and flounder around there anymore anyway.

do you have a boat?

here's a good place to figure out where i'm talking about: http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/11545.shtml

Got any suggestions for a good flounder spot this weekend? I was thinking about putting in near Swansboro and trying some of the spots around there.

I'm thinking about a hiking/fishing trip up in the mountains; my dad told me his favorite time was in April. As I said, i'm a newbie so I was just trusting him (he used to hold a few NC fishing records back in the 80's so I assumed he was right). Is the season different up there?

I fish on folly pier http://www.ccprc.com/index.aspx?nid=66

I had a lot of luck with blue this last year. I've seen some pretty big king caught too. The sights are pretty good too, if you know what I mean

king fishing is mostly about the camaraderie, but half the guys down there are dicks. i don't go king fishing on a pier to catch kings. if i actually want to catch one, i'll stop being jewish and go on a fucking boat. a lot of those guys don't get it. you'll meet a lot of know-it-alls and douches, but you'll also meet some really chill guys who would do anything for you.

so far as actual fishing advice, go ahead and spend the money for a TLD or something with a lever drag. lever drag makes it a hell of a lot easier to adjust your drag and know where it's set and if you hook something and get it to the pier, you're gonna have to make drag adjustments quickly and know where your drag is set or the line's gonna break or he'll run under the pier and break you off.

get your own gaff, because some of those fuckers hate a mooch. don't use your gaff on other people's fish unless there's nobody else out there with one. those douches i mentioned earlier skeet all over themselves for a chance to gaff a fish and you'll just be in the way.

get a drop net. same rules apply for this as for the gaff.

if they have a bait tank on the pier, take a bait bucket anyway.

don't worry too much when you fuck something up. you might piss someone off, but the best way to get back on his good side is to ask him how he prevents that problem from happening and do whatever he says to do, even if it is dumb and makes no sense. king fishing is fun when the people like you, even if you don't catch anything or if you lose a fish, but catching a truckload isn't fun if the old farts down there hate you.

swansboro is probably about as good as any spot. i usually don't target flounder until the water warms up. we pick up a few in the creeks through the winter as we're trout fishing, but we definitely pick up way more from april to october.

No, not yet anyway. But my neighbor at the island, Billy, has a new CS on the lift next door, equipped with powerpoles. PM me your #, I'll give you a call sometime when I think we're heading out. Maybe we could work out a reasonable trade for a day's tour around the inlet and marsh.

Thanks for the tips as well! I've done a bit of fishing around the hook/rock jetti, and a litttttle bit of spot fishing on the marsh, but that's the extent of it.

^^i don't really have much interest in going that far to fish or dealing with the crowded boat ramps and fishing holes of morehead city/beaufort/atlantic beach anymore. ever since i learned to fish the creeks and rivers for my specks and drum, about the only thing that gets me to go down there anymore are reports of good cobia bites.

Yo Neuse, do you want to expand on this at all? I can understand if you don't want to muddy up the fishing thread with politics but Id like to hear more specifics on your opinion.

look at virginia and florida. nuff said.

pretty much, they need to get rid of netting and trawling, but they're so damn scared that somebody will lose their job. the netters believe they have a right to it "because my diddy and his diddy before were all netters and it's all i know." that don't make it OK imo. if we built our fisheries into the awesome recreational fishing destination that it could be, i'd be willing to bet we'd bring more money into the state than commercial fishing does (see VA and FL). right now there are tons of people from NC driving several hours hauling boats and buying VA fishing licenses so that they can go fishing and actually have a chance of catching something. that's money that NC is missing out on b/c a bunch of politicians are afraid they'll lose the white trash vote from down around the coast if they restrict netting.

Copy that, and I don't disagree, necessarily.

Its def a heated topic. I've heard stories of bricks being thrown through truck windshields just b/c they have a CCA sticker on the back!

when you start seeing nets stretched across 40 feet of a 50 ft wide creek, it'll make you wanna grab a fillet knife and commit some vandalism as well

i've literally had to move nets before because they had them stretched across the entire creek

Understandable, but Billy and I have houses right beside one another. He's got a dock, and boat lift. We can get out and in at low tide as well. It's on the sound side of the island, like 15 minutes by boat to hatteras, and as I'm sure you know...Harker's Island does not get "crowded", that's the beauty of the place. Maybe at the boat ramps and some popular spots like Taylor's Creek, but we don't even have a whole lot of traffic anytime of year really.

...come down to wilmington, I'll 'take you fishing' for free. If you wanna pay for gas and drinks and bait, it's your own prerogative.

Also, just got an email from NCSU for the "Sport Fishing School". It's $1400, but you fish 3 chartered days. After I make sums of money, I think I'm going to do it.

caught from lake raleigh:

there are some decent bass, some really really nice crappie, some bream and catfish too. you really need a small boat to get to them, though. i never catch shit from the bank there. i've never fished in lake johnson.
