i finally got it working on my phone. they key is to go to ncsu.edu/password and change ur password. i didnt change my, just put in the same one for the new one. it said it would sync my passwords across the network. i did this last night, and on the first try (did everything the same as before) it finally set up my email on my phone

Just FYI: It now appears that OIT is backing away from its commitment to provide graduating students with e-mail addresses "for life" (sixth paragraph):

^ Um. . .no. Maybe you're just not reading the quotations correctly--and I'm not trying to be nasty.

In any event, I have spoken with several people at OIT concerning this situation and my facts are correct. The article that is still posted on the NCSU Web site clearly states that "instead of losing their NC State e-mail addresses when they graduate, students will keep them for life." But this is not the case--the current four-month policy is in effect and will not be changed by any date certain.

And, yes, this information is concerning Gmail. SquirrelMail/Webmail and GroupWise/WolfWise are going away eventually anyway.

Just trust me on this one, okay? I've been through months of wrangling on this issue.

Yeah, that policy page is definitely outdated. I've always heard that students will maintain their G-mail accounts for life.

That said, chances are that gmail.ncsu.edu will no longer work since according to the university you don't have an account. You'd probably have to log in as whatever@ncsu.edu through the normal Gmail interface.

That policy is old and outdated. I left NCSU and still have my gmail school account. All it really serves a purpose for anymore is facebook spam:




All my personal email was already being funneled to my @gmail.com account before they decided to switch. So despite the @ncsu.edu address, the account really doesn't do a whole lot for me.

Yeah, I still have my Gmail account, too--what's your point? According to OIT, I will not continue to have it indefinitely--they claim that they want to let graduating students keep their e-mail accounts "for life," but that currently is not the case. The existing four-month policy stands--and if any of you would like to post a link to an "updated" policy, be my guest. NB: You can't because the one I posted is the current policy.

But as I indicated, don't believe me--I challenge you to simply call the Help Desk. You will see that I am correct.

The following is a direct quotation sent to me in June from a director at OIT:

I graduated longer than 4 months ago and my account is still active. It might have something to do with me being an early adopter and also an early tester from a year/so ago. No idea, but I'm not trolling when I tell you that my account still works.

And I would think that since OIT claims that they want to offer the lifetime service that they're not in a hurry to delete e-mail accounts. FTR, I get what you're saying, but everything I posted was straight from OIT.

Anyway, I'm glad you still have your NCSU account if you want it. I wish OIT would just go ahead and honor the commitment that was published.

i'm assuming my friend is just an idiot but did OIT send any kind of notices that their email would change over to google in the last couple weeks? i don't know when everybody was transferred over but he said he still logged into the old webmail two weeks ago, and then asked me why it wasn't working tonight...

i'd be willing to bet there was an email with info in it but it was ignored but i'm just curious.

and why does the old webmail page still work? it does have a banner ad on the login page but it still has a field to let you attempt to log in...

The old page still works because faculty and staff still use it. It's only students' email that was moved to google, us old folk still use cyrus/"unity mail" or groupwise (or in some cases both).

And, while they did send out e-mails about the upcoming change I do think they were in many cases ignored, and the Help Desk is going to be pretty slammed if they're not already.

The Office of Information Technology migrated more than 44,000 accounts to Google Apps @ NC State.

University procedures had been to disable access to your university-provided e-mail account four months after graduation. However, with the campus decision to move student e-mail to Google Apps Education Edition, we are working to implement a process that will allow you to retain access to your "UnityID@ncsu.edu" e-mail account as an alumnus. You will be able to use your account as long as NC State provides an e-mail service to campus. The only difference between your Google Apps @ NC State account and those of current students is that eventually it will include ads off to the side, similar to how personal Gmail accounts work.
