I emailed virtually about everyone in student government asking them if they could help at all in the organization and publicity aspects of this and I didn't get a response. If anyone has any other ideas then I'd still love to do this if possible.

Hmm so let me get this straight, we have over 18,000 folks show up at our Kay yow Spring game and we 'WHoop up on the tarheels ass the past 2 seasons in football' and ESPN wants to televise from the school that didnt even have 5,000 folks at their Spring football game last season???

ESPN's football credibility is DEF! taking a hit on this dumbass decision!

I think it would've been a good idea if student government had gotten involved, but they didn't ever respond. Then some dude messaged me on Facebook and said he had a bunch of people going and to join his group. Then I found out that he only had like 50 people and just gave up on the entire idea.

Either way if they only get 2-5k there again this year I really hope ESPN shows those bleachers. UNC is gonna have to give soooooo much shit away for them to get people there.

As the date of their spring game gets closer, they will try to create a buzz around going to this. They will most likely have a lot of give-aways and incentives to go. I have a feeling that they will have a great turn out with fans. 10-15K - most will have unc basketball related shirts. Everyone knows that when the cameras are there, UNC fans always turn up to enjoy the spot light (see: any UNC sport ever when they are bad & out of the headlines compared to when they are good & in the spot light). This will only add to how much we hate them. If this game is not televised... they would only have about 3K show up. With that said... the crowd will be confused and lost in how to act during the game - most will be bored, many will leave early. Minimal cheering after the 1st 5 minutes. I will watch just to see the epic fail that is unc football and laugh every time TJ fucks up.

remember when Butch Davis worked for ESPN? That may have something to do with how they pulled off this primetime spot without a history of decent spring game outings... This will only serve to get him more publicity as a HC that should be recruiting for a Big 12 or SEC team -and he leaves UNC within the next 2 yrs

Quote :
"University of North Carolina students are invited to compete in a 40-yard dash to determine the "Fastest Tar Heel On Campus" during Carolina's nationally televised ESPN Spring Football Game on Saturday, April 10 at 3 p.m. Six finalists (three male, three female) will race against some of the fastest Carolina varsity student-athletes at halftime of the Spring Game. Linebacker Zach Brown, who earlier this semester set the school record in the indoor 60-meter dash, is tentatively scheduled to represent the football team.

Preliminaries of the Fastest Tar Heel on Campus contest will be held April 7 at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Hooker Intramural Fields adjacent to Carmichael Arena. Registration for the event, which is hosted by UNC Campus Recreation and the UNC Athletic Department, will be conducted online at http://campusrec.unc.edu/special_events from March 22 through April 6. Prizes will be awarded to the six finalists.

All participants must be current full-time students (undergraduate or graduate) at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. In addition, participants must not be listed on a 2009-10 roster for any varsity sport at UNC.

In addition to the 40-yard dash, the athletic department will give away four 58-inch HDTVs to the fraternity, sorority, residence hall and student group (1 HDTV to each group) with the highest attendance at the Spring Game."

The TV thing is a great idea.

^ Our sports marketing people, Sports Information Dept. and AD should all be canned ASAP. I don't want them taking one good idea from UNC about how to attract people to the Spring Game because I want our new Chancellor to see how shitty a job they all do.

Their sole purpose for this (besides recruiting) is to show off their expansion construction in the endzone where the taco bell used to be...more aluminum to blind the players

I thought this would've been a good idea when I first heard about it, but honestly I would like to avoid going to Chapel Hill altogether unless we're playing them. Going to this game isn't as appealing as. sleeping late and doing something else on a Saturday afternoon. Hopefully even though UNC is giving out free shit the bleachers will still be blinding on TV.

I think ESPN shows NCSU enough love as it is.

Think about how many times we have hosted or played in a Thursday night game. I bet it is at least twice as many as UNC has. They didn't even host their first Thursday night game until last year. I think we have at least 2 this up-coming season.
Plus, we have hosted "Game Day" when a lot of people thought we had no business hosting it.

So, I'm not really complaining about them getting their Spring Game aired. More power to them.

You do know that UNC hadn't hosted a Thursday night game until last year because the administration forbid Thursday night games on campus til last year, right?

But I agree, we seem to get a lot of unwarranted ESPN primetime action

How many people were at their spring game last year? I could see it if they were coming off a BCS bowl game but they are coming off of a mediocre year that ended badly. Why does this warrant ESPN involvement? FUCK ESPN and FUCK UNC...

Based on the UNC fans that have invaded that Facebook group, their winning season last year is enough to warrant ESPN wanting to televise their game. Also their football program is leaps and bounds ahead of ours to where the completely deserve this televised spring game.

http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/04/07/425325/its-a-whole-new-game-for-heels.html

Notable quotes from the article:

The Tar Heels and ESPN, which will televise the game live, believe Saturday's exhibition will be a big hit. A year after drawing about 2,000 fans, UNC officials are hoping big prizes and a day packed with events will entice at least 20,000 to Kenan Stadium for the free scrimmage at 3 p.m.

UNC coach Butch Davis, who sent out a letter to fans on March 3 urging them to attend, said he's not worried about being embarrassed on national television by another low turnout.

if we were really smart we would have gone through a covert operation to host a massive whine & cheese party... or a re-airing of the 2008-2009 NCAAT run at the Dean Dome or something on the same day as their spring game...a douchebaggy event to distract them from their lower priority sport on national television.

I really hoped they'd get a low turn out again, but this is scheduled before the UNC/State baseball game Saturday night and is also being marketed. Imagine what type of turnout NCSU could have if we had a SID and Sports Marketing Dept. worth shit.

Trust me Carolina fans dont give a fuck about regular season football, there is no chance they get a good turnout at a spring game.

They barely even understand the rules and getting "rowdy" at a UNC game means taking off your radio headphones and yelling "WOO" after carolina gets up by 10 in a game against Wofford.

Carolina will never accomplish anything in ACC football again, signed 1980's.

They never get up for big games and even when they were a borderline legit ACC contender in the mid 90's they still got beat convincingly.

With ESPN on deck they will have a huge crowd and even if they don't ESPN will use their best UNC camera trick: Pan left across small group of fans zoomed in. Cut to another angle of same fans panning opposite direction. Maybe James Cameron can come and cg in some fans. or maybe a football team...

fyi the arguments on the facebook group are getting hilarious
