I'm looking for an all around type of boat. I don't fish now but with a boat I'll take it up. I need one to get to Shackleford. One that might can pull me on skis every now and then. One that I can cruise up to the McCurdys and get dinner. And one that I could get a little bit near shore on days other than perfectly calm if buddies happened to be in town and wanted to do that.4/7/2011 10:09:49 PM |

[Edited on April 8, 2011 at 8:39 AM. Reason : nothing wrong with a mariner if you take care of it]
^nowadays all motorboats under 20' are required to have the famous "unsinkable" characteristic (positive flotation) that whaler harps on. foam flotation is not really anything special.

I guess I'm looking more towards a people carrier to do the island hopping thing. I'd like to think I actually become a fisherman one day but I'm not sure how likely that will be. We're young and to get to Shackelford from here is 12 miles for me and to get to a lot of the other little islands in the Bogue Sound is even less. 4/9/2011 9:39:39 PM |

i did the same thing on an old 20 hp merc. best bet is to find a used prop. i had three of those engines at one time, one on the boat and two for parts. after i spun the prop, i kept a spare prop on the boat along with the tools to change it.
^^flatbottoms like that ride really rough, handle like shit, and they spray you with water in a chop. i see no reason to purchase a flatbottom for what you want to do, but that boat will certainly get you over there and back.

spent most of this past weekend going through the new boat and getting it like i want it. re-did some wiring, installed the trolling motor and 2 batteries, new bilge pump float switch, got all the lights working, straightened out the trailer fender that the dude swiped his barn with, got all the rust stains off from around the cleats and stuff, and a good cleaning. still gotta get the new NC letters on it and fill it up with fuel before we take it out saturday. 4/11/2011 9:32:54 PM |

ran 40 knots today in light chop w/ 3 people and a full tank of gas (80 gallons). Has 4 big batteries as well. VHF, GPS/chartplotter, downscan fish/depth finder w/ water temp, stereo in t-top. Weather is supposed to suck tomorrow so hopefully sunday I can head out and fish some.

^^ & ^^^ Very nice! Where do you plan to ride the Superjet SteveO?
Adding a pic of my SX-R. Just fixed some deep gel coat scratches this past week from where my trailer was cutting into it while loading/launching and I didn't realize it at the time. Also going to swap out a lot of the hardware inside (head bolts, exhaust bolts, etc) that are rusted from a salt water trip and keep it freshwater from now on.
I also have a 650SX in the shop with the engine torn down. I'm thinking of just grabbing a SBT engine for $500 and swapping my head/intake manifold/exhaust manifold onto it just to get it on the water faster so I can sell it. It's an awesome ski with some very nice performance parts, but I just bought it as a cheap project. 4/16/2011 10:20:56 AM |

If the floor seems solid, boat has compression and cranks easily, wiring looks to be in decent shape, what else would you check before dropping the cash on something like this?

My gp1300r is almost out of the shop...it has been in there for an obscenely long time, and I've had to get all but nasty with the owner to get it done.
The good news is that, according to the owner, one of his guys test rode it the other day, and got to an indicated 74 mph in chop before crying uncle and backing off. I can't wait to verify this myself. 5/18/2011 8:36:36 AM |

FUCK.
Got the GPR back today, finally, after dropping it off 7-8 MONTHS ago for a paint job and throttle position sensor replacement. Absolutely ridiculous timeline. Also, the paint job isn't the Yamaha blue that I asked for, but it looks good, so I can deal with that. I'm not happy that it cost $600 plus another couple hundred in prep, rather than the $450-500 that I was quoted as an estimate.
In fact, the estimate given to me several times was $1500 for all of the stuff I wanted done. The final bill came to $2700.
Now, granted, about $500 of that $1200 over budget was due to rebuilding the pump, including a new pump housing. This was done because the boat took on water and almost sank when they test rode it. It didn't leak when I dropped it off, but whatever...I saw the old housing, and it did have some damage, and the bearings and seals would have needed replacement eventually, anyway...at any rate, they said that got that fixed, took it down to the river to float-test it, and everything was OK.
...but that still leaves us $700 over on what was a $1500 estimate. Some of it was getting in there and finding other little things that were broken and needing replacement (example being my left grip/trim control...which he replaced with a used part he had lying around, and still charged me $40). A lot of it was labor, though, which I felt like he should have eaten, due to the fact that it had taken him since OCTOBER to do a pretty simple job, and that it was grossly over the estimate he gave me.
Well, anyway, I put the ski in the river today and ran it...I got about 1/2 mile from the dock, and everything was running fine, except that it was only getting 59.7 mph (GPS verified), which is roughly 10 mph shy of where it should be. Then, the engine abruptly started bogging down and running poorly, and I could only make 25-30 mph. I turned towards home, noticed it was handling oddly, and pretty soon realized that it was because the hull was fucking filling with water. The engine began running worse and worse, and the hull started riding lower and lower. By the time I got it back to the dock, it was barely afloat, and the engine wouldn't run at all. I limped the last few yards by holding the starter button down to turn the impeller.

Only way you can tell is if there's data, either in the build specs or on the interwebs somewhere, that states that the boat contains wood, either as structural framework or as 'glass core material (like balsa, which has traditionally been very popular for 'glass coring). 5/20/2011 10:58:15 PM |

Took it back to the shop this morning. I suspected that it was somehow pumping water into its own hull, as a leak wouldn't fill it with water so fast, and it didn't think it had taken on water while sitting still tied to the dock. I didn't think it was a cooling line popped off of a fitting, either.
Turns out that they hooked up the lines for the bilge/scupper and for the cooling feed backwards...so it wasn't cooling properly, and it was indeed pumping water into the hull.
Once we got those switched back, we took the plugs out, turned the engine until it blew all the water out, compression tested it (120-116-125), and ran it...everything went fine.
Backed it into the river, let it idle for 5-10 minutes on the trailer...everything still looked good, so I launched it and rode it. Everything was good, still, so I headed out down the Neuse and the Trent. Got about five miles away, let off the throttle, and I'm stuck at idle. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. I could feel slack in the throttle, so I figured it was just a linkage issue, but the ski was rocking too much to really work on it while standing on it in the middle of the Neuse. I idled for probably 45 minutes or an hour until I got to a good dock, where I tied it off and found the offending linkage, which was indeed popped out of place. I got it reattached well enough to ride it home at WOT...I'll fix it permanently tonight. 5/21/2011 3:55:23 PM |

how fast did it go before it broke? I rode an indicated 67 on water in a friends tricked jetski back in high school. maybe it was because I'd never been on water before but it didn't feel all that fast. i was more comfortable leaning that thing at speed that I was with motorcycles for a LONG time. Well, the guy I bought it from said he clocked it at 68 mph on RADAR. I've never clocked it at more than low 60s on GPS, which is what it's running now.
Really, it should run upper 60s, I'd think. It has a lot of Riva go-fast goodies, but isn't really any faster than a stock GP1300R.
[Edited on May 21, 2011 at 8:57 PM. Reason : it indicates upper 60s / low 70s, maybe occasionally showing indicated mid-70s.]

I know you were probably pissed and frustrated, but if this ever happens again you really want to get the water out ASAP. I hope it didn't get past the rings or you probably took a lot of life out of the crank bearings.5/23/2011 12:24:12 AM |

yeah, it went about 18 hours before blowing the water out. I was afraid to do anything with it, for fear of doing more damage.
I'm going to try to embed a GoPro video of it...finally got everything dialed in; clocked it at 68.9 mph on GPS.

unless you're gonna be making frequent long runs and/or trolling all day, i don't see a reason to completely exclude 2 strokes. you'll save money on the purchase and on service by going with a 2 stroke. both have their pros and cons, but i think you may miss a good deal if you rule out 2 strokes.5/23/2011 7:15:32 AM |

Not sure...if you had smooth water and cruised at 50-60 mph instead of balls-out, you could go a decent distance. Ridden hard, though, it'll burn a tank out in a couple of hours or less. 5/23/2011 4:01:32 PM |

I've done around 70 miles on a Yamaha XL1200 at a cruising pace (mid-30's) and still had some in the tank when I got back.
I'd be surprised if I can get 12 miles out of 3ish gallons in my standup. I usually get three 15 minute sessions out of it and I'm on the reserve tank. I've had to swim it in from a half mile out on a few occasions.

Yeah, my only saving grace range-wise is that it's an efficient hull and it effortlessly cruises at 55+ mph...like, prob <1/2 throttle. Of course, it's at WOT most of the time.
A ski like my GPR isn't really the tool for the job of actually GOING places.
Also, I want a stand-up...someday, I'll prob sell the GPR, buy an offshore speedboat, and then get a stand-up just to goof around on. 5/23/2011 8:31:28 PM |
