Yeah I was actually glad to see this happen. The Phillies are overpaying for a player who has likely already peaked or is at his peak. Here's hoping his fat ass body starts bereaking down in the next couple of years. The Phillies seem to never have serious injuries to their star players (outside of Lidge). Howard or Utley or Werth or Halladay, one of those guys needs to blow out a knee soon.
Also here's hoping Howard can use some of that money to figure out how to make his mouth wider than his nose.

Red Sox pitchers dominate for 2 nights in a row?

at the mets/phils game yesterday, i had seats in the 2nd row, right field.
the guy in front of me was relentlessly heckling jeff francoeur.
however, unlike typical philly fashion, it was the cleanest heckling i've ever heard. through eight innings, not a single curse word was said. completely hysterical though, the entire section was laughing and carryin' on, egging it on.. even joining in.
now why i bring this up, was something i'd never seen before happened.
in the home half of the 8th, security came to the heckler, who was sitting in front of me, so i caught the conversation.
the security guy said that francouer had complained about the heckler behind him, and the mets had asked that he be removed.
so the guy shut up and security let him stay, even though the game was over at that point.
just seemed interesting to me, and i hadnt seen that happen before. i mean i can understand it if it was in any way threatening, abusive, or profane. it was none of these.
i mean, i've seen plenty of people get tossed, but never at the specific request of a player. even the security guard was laughing.
guess he got into his head.] 5/2/2010 9:16:06 PM |

So the Phillies get 84 home games this year and only have 78 road games. How exactly is it fair to move a road series to their own ballpark? It should be played at a neutral site, revenue lost be damned. That is completely outrageous to me and frankly, completely unfair to the other four teams in the division.

^ I agree. Especially since it looks like the Mets will be contending with the Phillies. Since the Braves suck anyway, I am not worried about it, but it is complete bullshit.
Move the game to the old Montreal stadium and draw some revenue that way. Don't take it back to Philly and let that Phillies lineup rake in their own tiny ballpark where guys like Werth look like Pujols. 5/12/2010 8:06:03 AM |

Since I'm in full on Phillies hating mode. I will say that this isn't the first time this has come up. The Mets complained about it in 2007 and as Santana was getting murdered. And the Yankees complained about it last year during the World Series and with former Phillies manager Larry Bowa flat out saying they cheated when he was there in the same manner.
I think a few thrown at Chase Utley or Ryan Howard -- preferably up at the neck -- could curtail this kind of action aside from any baseball imposed sanctions. ] 5/12/2010 8:43:29 AM |

Very odd behavior from Manuel. He went on a seemingly random obscenity laced tirade about the Mets in response to this.
Quote : | "The mere mention of the Mets got Manuel going.
“Somebody maybe ought to check the Mets if they did that,” Manuel said. “Their [bleeping] home record is out of this world and they’re losing on the road. Sometimes that’s a good indicator of getting signs and [crap]. I see somebody setting there at (14-7) at home and (4-8) on the road, I’d get concerned about that. That kind of crosses my mind.
“I’m not accusing them, but you look at that and – damn. We’re about the same home and road. I’m just saying their record is much better at home and they hit better.”" |

I dont mind players stealing signs if they are on base/etc. But when you bring coaches into it especially using binoculars. That's where I draw the line.

The Royals are essentially a very crappy version of the Braves - all kinds of former Braves employees in that organization now since Dayton Moore took over. Maybe in time he'll pull off what Scheurholtz did in Atlanta, but he needs guys like Cox and Mazzone for it to be successful. 5/14/2010 9:47:11 AM |

that joe morgan thing reminds me of how i had a miserable time last night trying to explain to my dad that fielding percentage is a worthless stat. he started getting angry with me and was making all kinds of illogical conclusions, like if shortstop A has better range than shortstop B and thus has a better chance at converting outs but has a lower fielding percentage, he must not be as good because he's clearly making too many throwing errors 5/17/2010 1:44:45 PM |

I don't know of a way to check for a streak spanning two games (like Crawford's)
And it may have happened in the 4-5 more recent games I can't see because I don't have a B-R.com subscription
But it's happened as recently as June of last year
