Would anything really have gone wrong if the police had just let them do their shit without interference?
I mean, have a police presence, that's fine... but unless they start doing some dangerous shit, don't bother to try and stop it. Otherwise you get a mess like this, with a pissed off crowd roaming around town and a bunch of crowd-control bullshit. If something goes to hell on this, it'll be the PD's fault.
