^ The last numbers I saw, China had 3x the population and 3x the number of "engineers" (nothing strange there), india had 4x our population but less engineers. This also doesn't take into account quality (a lot of the chinese engineering I've seen is terrible) and the fact that india and china tend to bulk their reported numbers up with IT and 2 year "technical" type degrees whereas our numbers are reflecting engineers with true 4 year+ degrees.
USA: 222,335 India: 215,000 China: 644,106

There are some dumb people in every bunch. All Harvard grads aren't super geniuses or something: George W. Bush went there.

^yea education really needs to be pretty well-rounded. I hate the idea of engineers I know saying "ah it's ok; I'm an engineer so I don't need to know English well." But I also hate the people who are liberal arts majors who have to get their phone app out to calculate a tip.
When did we start deciding that the only important things to know and understand are in some narrow spectrum that directly relates to one's major in school? 5/13/2010 7:43:18 AM |

^ I hate that one. And I hate explaining it to people. I just can't manage to get it through to some people. "Fewer is for things you can count. Less is for things you can't. Fewer pencils. Less milk." "But you can count milk." "No you can't." "Yes I can. Three gallons of milk." "You're counting the gallons, not the milk. Less milk. Fewer gallons of milk." "What's the difference?" I have a friend who thinks she's hot shit because she's a teacher and always talks about how smart she is. On both her plenty of fish profile and facebook profile she has words misspelled and misused. Words that any adult of reasonable intelligence should know how to use correctly. I want to call her out about it, but I don't know how to bring it up without being an asshole.
Also, have a coworker who proclaims herself to be a "highly inteligent, under achiever" on her facebook. I want to talk shit to her too, but I hate work tension. 7/18/2011 4:03:12 PM |

Also, I have such a hatred for people that use "myself" instead of being able to determine between "me" and "I." It's really prevalent on reality tv and it really grinds my gears. Like:
"John and myself went to the store."
"He gave it to John and myself."

^ I hate when people use "I" in all situations because for some reason they think it's always the correct word.
"He gave it to John and I."
"They took a photo with Betty and I." 7/18/2011 4:30:59 PM |

FroshKiller, the rule on capitalization of titles is that all words except for articles, coordinating conjunctions, and prepositions of fewer than five letters, all occurring strictly between the first and last words of the title, should be capitalized; I actually am a bit annoyed when computer-generated listings miss that last exception, even though I know no way to rectify it, because it actually can disambiguate things (the meaning of the title of the Live song "People like You" is slightly different from "People Like You" because in the former "like" is a preposition while in the latter "Like" is a verb).
Anyway, you should note that words other than articles, coordinating conjunctions, and prepositions should always be capitalized in titles in the English language (other languages have other conventions, like in Spanish only the first word and any proper nouns should be capitalized); this includes "big" and "if" and "you" even though all of those words have fewer than five letters...and it also includes "good" and "well" for that matter. Quote : | "use of "good" and "well"
its really not that hard good=nouns well=verbs" | Technically the distinction is that "good" is an adjective and "well" is an adverb (albeit one that only appears to modify verbs or their participles, rather than adjectives and other adverbs not derived directly from verbs), except that when "well" describes a state of health it is an adjective; actually "well" is in all five of the open classes of English grammar (verb, noun, adjective, adverb, and interjection).
Grammar is more complicated than you might think: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Part_of_speech
