I have just started this and am pretty lost, never having played anything like DOTA. The most this reminds me of is in warcraft when they had heroes you could control along with your units.

the recommended item builds aren't bad to start with. leaguecraft.com has good suggestions as well.

As far as what heroes are good, there are plenty. if you are good, there are even more. the key is to decide what you want to play and then learn 2-3 heroes of that type to start. once you are good with those you can start trying to branch out.

auto attack heroes with no hard skillshots are easy to start. someone like miss fortune might work well for that (so long as you dont REALLY screw up the ultimate). off tanks or tanky dps arent bad for beginners either. you could easily get away with a mordekaiser or something similar early on.

the key is that low level "good heroes" are not always great high level and vice versa. remember, your competition is pretty weak at that level for the most part.

garen (captain spin to win) is good for beginners. I would not suggest Morde, hes actually pretty easy to be horrible with due to his total lack of cc or escapes.

^^ I actually played with Garen last night and wasn't a fan. Felt like I kept dropping in health too quickly if I got anywhere near another hero. His lvl 6 skill was nice and let me kill some heroes, but we faced a team with Ashe and cho'gath and it just wiped the floor with us. We ended up winning (coop vs AI), but they had a good 15-18 more kills than we did.

I think I would like a ranged hero a bit more than the up close melee.

well ashe is an easy hero to play and is fairly good, but her arrow can take some practice to be good with.

miss fortune is about the same, since neither really has a great escape mechanism (though ashe at least can waste her ult to buy time). MF's ult is a bit easier to use in team fights though, just come in a smidge late and clean up.

caitlin has monster range so she's easy to start with and her ult isn't a skillshot. she also comes with the net, which if you use only as an escape, is nice to have compared to the others. she feels a little more difficult to play effectively to me though.

my personal preference is ashe > cait > mf currently. though they are similar enough in skills, power, and fun and i find them to be the easiest to get into.

My main character is Garen. He's super easy to play. Build talents: R > E > Q > W (get 1 in W early though)
I always start with boots, then go Warmogs (if I have several kills - which is often) and then Sunfire Cape. The cape is amazing at farming mid-level. Then from here, I normally go damage gear.

Easy first kill with Garen/anyone else:
Get to bushes first, go to their bushes. If you are playing any non-lvl 30, then the morons will face check the bush. Melee swing, exhaust, spin to win, melee swing = dead anyone. It doesn't matter what your teammate does as long as they hit them once or twice.

My best game as Garen at lvl 30 has been 25-2-7. He's a monster once you use him effectively.

I've started playing a lot of Alistar lately. That dude is fun.

he was more fun right after they redid him with monster dmg. he's still alright once you get the headbutt -> popup timing down.

that said i prefer the ol' FoN over the warmogs on garen for the monster regen with his passive, but i guess both works. least with the warmogs you could go into an atmas for futher dmg and resistances.

Won my 1st 4v5 tonight (unranked, ive not been 30 very long) .

Since Annie's early game got nerfed ive been playing around with some different builds. I'm really starting to like taking a dagger first at mid Attack speed works surprisingly well with her long attack range and stuns for harassing and farming

Ironically, I also started playing this on Sunday. Played a few Co-op vs AI games throughout the week (Ashe and Shaco primarily) and last night played my first game against real people. Was a painful loss (I am MCGusto)

he's pretty retarded late game since he can one hit any squishy and doesn't die. though i guess if he actually gets harassed in a 2v1 or 2v2 situation enough then he can't farm and can't do much.

I added Wirts (im suicidal ghost) and would be down for a ranked team. Ive never played ranked before though. Honestly Im not sure what kind of skill level im at so i guess a try out may be in order. My best games are usually when i solo a side lane. I usually play nunu annie and tryn but im working on rammus cait and shaco.
