My roommates wanted to watch the NFL game tonight (and I don't have an HD TV in my room yet) so no PS3 for me
However I wanted to look something up in GT4 and after rummaging around for a bit in my bedroom was astonished to discover its missing. Given that I haven't played it in over a year and a half, I have no freaking clue where it went I also swore I still had a copy of GT3 around too...also MIA.
what in the fuck.

that's pretty terrible
I played maybe 4-5 hrs worth. The used car selection/UI sucks. The load times are horrible. Polygonal wheel wells The fact that you can only change rims on premium cars sucks. Engine audio still sucks.

I do not understand the point of B-Spec. Who the fuck gives a shit about "managing" a driver. It's fucking lame and in my eyes is just a cheat to get money. That being said, right now I have 2 TVs in my bedroom so on Saturday I was watching football while directing my B-spec driver through some races and making some money.
I also think it's ridiculous that a lot of good sports cars are just "standard" cars without interiors. Meanwhile you have shit like a VW Minibus or some weird WV tank looking thing from the 50s in the "premium" car category. Who gives a damn about that?
That being said what's everyone status with the game? I finally got a chance to play a lot this weekend. Right now I'm at level 12, have the B, A and International C licenses. Not including the standard cars you "win" what has everyone purchased? I started out with the Miata and now have a DC5 Integra Type R and a 1976 Ferrari 512BB. I've got around 230k credits at the moment and am not sure what I'll buy next..though I'm leaning towards a Z06.
I haven't done any online play yet, instead been doing a lot of races alone to get myself back in the groove 12/6/2010 9:55:23 AM |

i'm at level 9.
started out with an '85 RX-7 FC (because i picked up GT5 on my birthday, they gift you a free car from the year you were born). my main car is a '98 3000GT VR4 with basic stage 1 upgrades that I'm using for most of the "open" (non classified) races.
Also I gotta say, that '87 Mugen Motul Civic Si race car you get early on is pretty badass 12/6/2010 10:58:01 AM |

Does anyone else have problems with the car sounds? The cars sounds realistic and fantastic if I drive using the hood or rear overhead view but if I use the bumper view or in car dashboard (and most realistic) view the engine is practically silent. I can't hear a thing, and it's so bad that often times I don't know when to shift.
I prefer using the dashboard view b/c it's the most realistic but have been driving mainly from the rear overhead view b/c I want to hear the cars.
WTF Polyphony Digital? Anyone else notice this issue? Is there a way to correct it? (FYI I've already cranked up the vehicle sounds all the way up to 120 in the audio settings). 12/6/2010 1:35:47 PM |

I'm having an issue with sound all together. I'm getting none with this game. I've got the TV a Vizio to the receiver via optical. From the PS3 to the TV with HDMI. The normal HDMI auto setting won't work with this game.
Anyone have any ideas?

Try recalibrating the inputs on the PS3 maybe? Last night I swapped out HDMI cables with my roommate b/c I was using his and then I had sound issues until I let the PS3 do some autodetecting.

no, the prologue assigned a point score to your car based on the modifications. Races would only let you enter after you detuned your car enough get underneath the maximum points score. It forced you to have to keep buying cars instead of tuning the cars you already had. 12/8/2010 2:38:57 PM |

eleusis All American 24527 Posts user info edit post |
probably the best one yet for a newcomer. The AI has been really dumbed down, so you can win races without being a good driver at first. The licenses are also pretty easy to aquire. You can learn to drive while still advancing through the game, unlike earlier versions where you'd get stuck trying to beat good drivers with better cars in the early stages of the game. 12/8/2010 2:54:41 PM |

do they generally have cheat codes or do you have to earn everything?
I miss the 90s... cheat codes everywhere 12/8/2010 2:59:37 PM |
TKE-Teg All American 43410 Posts user info edit post |
^just spend a little time training your B-spec driver to be decent. Then enter him in some races and go do something else. You can earn money pretty easily that way, though it's not as easy as in GT4 where you could do an endurance race at 3x speed.
^^^I haven't encountered any races where you can't enter b/c of a horsepower cap. Which to me is pretty gay b/c there's always one AI car that is much faster than the rest so you have to pick a car to match up to him and the rest of the field gets blown away. If I recall from GT4 you'd get more "points" for using a car that slower or more competitive with the field. They eliminated that in this version, though you get experience points for winning races. I'm not sure if the corelation is the same? 12/8/2010 4:27:30 PM |

I, for one, think the whole B-spec AI driver thing is dumb.
I didn't buy a PS3 just to let a computer play it for me. If I don't want to play, I cut it off.
It's just like those idiots that have Diablo or Warcraft bots running for them. At some point it stops becoming a game and starts becoming a chore; arguably this is partially the developer's fault. 12/8/2010 4:55:48 PM |
Specter All American 6575 Posts user info edit post |
^ hey, if you like sitting through 24-hour endurance races then more power to you. i think all the events are identically reflected between Aspec and Bspec modes so no reason why you ever need to go into Bspec mode.
i tried doing a really long endurance race by hand once in GT3. it took me like 3 days and my PS2 damn near overheated from running and the game disc spinning for that long. i'm surprised my game didnt freeze up.
i do however think that the B-spec driver leveling up is retarded in this game. and i hate the little "delay" between pace commands

the problem with the B-spec is that I have to play through all the bullshit levels before I get to races that are actually worth my time. What's the point of winning $4,000 by entering a bot in the clubman cup? I bought a racing game because I want to drive cars, not to do a Rick Hendrick impersonation. 12/8/2010 5:49:28 PM |

No, I'm saying that 24-hour endurance races shouldn't be in the game at all. Or if they are, they should be bonus races with no effect on the campaign that are put there for the incredibly hardcore players to do for bragging rights. The developers should never put a 24-hour race into a game with the intention that people will just use an AI to do it for in-game cash. That's not a video game, it's a very boring and pointless cinematic.12/8/2010 6:40:46 PM |

i haven't played this one, but on ps2, pedals + wheel was much easier. especially for the more technical tracks (and the training things). 12/8/2010 11:02:27 PM |

I use the Logitech Driving Force GT wheel and its a lot of fun. The force feedback is sick, its really noticeably accurate w/ the karts. you can feel the front tires hopping if you're plowing, etc.
For being smooth which is almost everything paved, i like the steering wheel best. But for the dirt and some snow rallies, the controller seems to work a lot better. My gf and friends switch back and forth w/ the wheel and controllers a lot so i've used them both a good bit. 12/8/2010 11:05:47 PM |
TKE-Teg All American 43410 Posts user info edit post |
So I thought I was having a compatibility issue of sorts with my steering wheel. Turns out that's not the case...it's broken
So in a few months I'll be in the market for a wheel (can't afford one now). For now the controller is doing just fine. However, as the competition increases and the horsepower increases its harder and harder to control the car.
What kind of settings do you guys use with the driving aids? I leave the ABS at 1, shut off the traction control, but leave the skid assist on. 12/8/2010 11:56:01 PM |
JasonNSCU85 All American 2176 Posts user info edit post |
If you've never played a GT game before, but are interested in getting into it, this is the one to do it with. I've played GT1/2/3/4/5, and 5 is really the most dumbed down for new drivers. The driving line feature for EVERY race really eliminated learning the tracks.
I havn't played since last Sunday, but I'm at L19 A-Spec, L9 B-Spec, and B/A/IC/IB/IA Lic. The Veyron is sick sick sick... just use that for any race you can, and you'll dominate. As for B-Spec, the AI driver is retarded (Ex: For the truck race at Daytona, my driver was breaking in the corners...at DAYTONA!!! WTF!!! he came in last with a 600+ HP Dodge RAM Leramie Hemi. Also, I advise getting the Tacoma X-Runner for the truck series b/c of their top speed.) 12/9/2010 7:48:13 AM |
dannydigtl All American 18302 Posts user info edit post |
I leave ABS at 1 and all other assists off. TCS can slow you down a lot. I was brickwalled during some license tests and could not get Gold. I finally took off TCS and i blew Gold away.
I also use "simulation" setting for the steering wheel, power assist on, FFB at 7. Feels really good.
Last night i played some online for the first time. Kart racing is awesome! soooo much fun. I actually found a good group to race with and had a blast for like 3 hours. 12/9/2010 8:35:14 AM |
TKE-Teg All American 43410 Posts user info edit post |
^^How fast is the X-Runner? I got the Lightning and around Daytona maxed out at 165 when drafting, 145 without the benefit of drafting. It's pretty dumb that the AI occasionally brakes on that track, not cool at all. I've heard that to make your B-spec driver win you have to cough up the money for a full race transmission and adjust the top speed to be higher.
The driving line is interesting...but you can turn it off
^I think driving a powerful car with the skid assist turned off is too difficult if you're using a controller (not a wheel). My C63 AMG with header and exhaust (520hp) was ridiculous on Sport tires with the skid assist turned off. I could start fishtailing at speed in 4th gear in some turns. It did make for some fun drifting, but I think I'll leave the skid assist turned on till I have a wheel.
