I wake up and walk upstairs. about 2 minutes on a bad day, 45s on a good day.
In DC I was going from pentagon to herndon, which was 45-60min in to work and up 2 hours back depending on who fucked up the gw memorial.
It was so bad I bought a house in falls church (the city sucked and this hurt my nightlife quite a bit, but that's how much the commute sucked) right by the express lanes and my commute was 25-35 no matter what, which was awesome, but cost me anywhere from $4-7/day in tolls. It was all highway and completely tolerable, especially with my cars. Big V8 BMW sedans with enough torque to cruise in 6th paying little attention or hammer it and dart through everyone who decided to turn the highway into a parking lot. Very comfortable too.

Now I work from home and that kinda sucks too. My house starts to feel like a prison where work never ends.

In raleigh I probably had the best setup, I worked from home 1-2 days a week and in bad traffic my commute was ~18min, in good traffic it was 14min.

Currently looking at a job where I'll work from home 1-2 days a week and the office is 1mi door to door from my house.

I have a 35 minute commute. Its pretty much all on I40 though with no traffic, so its an easy drive. Podcasts are my friend.

I spent the last year dealing with this issue; working from home made me not able to differentiate between the two. I'd be working at 1AM just because I didn't think I was a good stopping point and knew I could just walk to bed and crash.

I'll be looking for a house to go along with the new office in the next few months, and I'd like to keep the commute in the 15 minute range. I was doing 45 minutes the last time I lived in Raleigh, and that was unbearable for me.

I have a 15-20 minute commute depending on traffic. 5 minutes to go 1 mile to get to 40, 5 minutes for the next 8 miles of my commute on 40, and 5 minutes from 40 to the office (another 2 miles). The worst stretch is that first mile.

My office is less than a mile from my house. I'd really like to ride my bike to work instead of driving...but it gets so damn hot down here and I don't want to go through dry cleaning every week. If I settle a big case, I almost want to ask my landlord if he wants to go halfsies on installing a shower in our bathroom. I would ride my bike then.

I used to ride my bike about a mile to work...I would put my work shirt in my bag and wear a tshirt. Then right before I was in sight of the office I'd put on the work shirt to walk in, then after I cooled down and stopped sweating go to the bathroom and take off/switch the undershirt

16-20 miles each way (depends on the route), from south Raleigh to Morrisville. Almost all I-40. And it fucking sucks. I swear to God you can literally see the traffic getting worse, week by week, due to the population growth. Fucking sucks driving 8,000 miles a year to work, but it's better than living in Morrisville .

Man I'd love to work in DTR. 10 minute commute tops

door to door is 4.8 miles - takes under 15-20min on a normal day

i had a 20 mile commute that took ~1hr and moved because it was miserable and rented a house 1.7 miles away - then bought 4.8 miles away

My commute (and job) have changed three times in the last year. Originally it was 30-35 mins. Straight shot down a rural highway. I hated it. But in some ways it was kinda nice to have a decent buffer zone between work and home.

Then it was about 5 miles. I enjoyed that much more. It was easier to run errands if I needed to during the work day. I'd run home and eat lunch some days. That's really nice.

Now it's less than a mile.

I live in NE Durham near Northgate Park, my commute is about 15-20 min to Chapel Hill driving, and 45-50 min riding my bike. It'd suck to commute longer than that.

I bike 10 mins to my workplace each day...when the weather permits

however, during the period Dec - mid-April, biking is not feasible, and parking anywhere near my work-building would cost $90/month, which I'd rather save. So I take the bus, which is free. It isn't so bad, especially since I HATE driving.

none of this shit remotely qualifies, by the farthest stretch of the imagination, as commuting, however.

I bike 15 minutes to work or take the light rail. Why wouldn't you consider your bike or bus ride a commute? Or am I missing something?

My work commute is a LOT better now. Went from 30+ miles/minutes to work via car, got even worse for a bit when I started working in Chapel Hill and sometimes drove directly to/from home which was 2 hours, to now with the family moved to Carrboro I have a 10-15 minute bus ride, 20 minute bike ride or 1 hour walking commute. Much happier.

For me, "commute" means you're taking a long-distance trip....I kinda don't even consider a half-hour trip to be a commute. Maybe I have a mistaken understanding of the word.

Yeah, it seems I do, looking at dictionary.com and wikipedia. There's no "especially over a long distance" or anything like that.

Still, saying "I commute 10 minutes on my bike" seems kinda silly. Maybe it shouldn't.

^ I'm pretty sure a commute is used solely for discussing your trip from home to work and back. Or any other destination you do on a regular daily basis, like to school or something of that nature. A commute is not the word to use when discussing a long distance trip.

But just like tons of other words, if you said it in the latter way, I'd know exactly what you're trying to say, just like when people use the word literally.

Primarily work but I guess if you go to the gym every day then saying "my commute to the gym" kind of makes sense?

I think the only instance where you're not commuting to work is if you work from home. My commutes never been more than 15 minutes at any of my jobs but I see your point because longer commutes obviously have a larger impact on someone's day.

agree.

I work 10am-6pm most days so my mornings aren't as bad. Took me about 25 minutes from North Raleigh to Davis Dr. but now that I've moved downtown it's about 20 minutes.

I also feel like Tuesdays are the worst day for traffic going back. Mondays don't seem as bad maybe because people call in sick or take long weekends or work from home. It seems like everyone is expected to be in the office Tuesdays.
