After getting an iPad I tried reading on it extensively but gave up and went back to the Kindle. Just wasn't as pleasant an experience.

^^^Did the coupon not work? The one I found excluded the Nook & Kindle. I noticed a lot of Kindle sells this weekend. Walmart had it $20 off with a $30 gift card. The Nook was also on sale for $20 off a few places.

I've been trying to decide which one to get and I'm leaning towards the Nook. I might wait a bit longer and ask for one for my birthday (late June) and see if any upgrades are announced by then.

^ yeah, the coupon worked...i was going to post a longer post just deleted everything...and then got distracted and the 30 minutes was up

i had posted to let folks know that you can get a new (non-refurb) nook simple touch for $60 after tax from staples

$80 retail + $1 for $25-off-$75 coupon from fleabay - $25 from coupon + $4 tax = about $60

i did it twice AND used some staples rewards at two stores (out of convenience, not because i didn't want to try it twice at the same store) and neither gave me any trouble

Not sure, so far none of the books I own, I can lend. Not seeing the ability to loan any of the A Song of Ice and Fire series.

are you a Prime member?

i imagine ASoIaF is probably prohibited from lending by Random House. I know they've also disabled the text-to-speech option on the Kindle for these books as well.

So I'm thinking about getting the lady an e-reader for Christmas and I think I'm going to make it simple and choose between the Nook and the Kindle. She loves my ipad3, but we don't need two of those and I'm not getting a mini, because I can't see the justification in cost. I'm leaning towards the Nook, and here are a few questions and observations:

- This will mainly be for reading and an occasional movie while we are traveling. We do travel a decent bit, so I would like for her to be able to web-browse (definitely not 4/3g), but that shouldn't be the primary focus.

- Everything I've read says that Nook has the better display...true? We do a lot of beach reading during the summer...so the sunlight display is a big factor...which is better for that?

- Since we do a lot of beach reading...is either reader better for wear-and-tear?

- Which is better for web-browsing? One article I read said that the Kindle has less "responsiveness" to the touch and screen recognition (apparently it has improved, but it still inferior to the Nook).

- Kindle has more apps. She's not a big app person, but does like the little games like "Cut the Rope". I can see her playing certain things like that and she likes to check the weather and shit. Again, she doesn't go crazy with the apps...but I'm going to assume that Nook still has the the basics.

- The Nook is lighter and thinner, yet its plastic and some say feels cheaper and less durable.

- Nook has no camera. I was all set to go Nook until this bit. She's kind of a picture freak...yet we use our phones and my ipad to take all of our pictures...so I'm trying to figure out if this is a deal breaker or not.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't use either on a beach. Both the Nook and Kindle "tablets" are not e-readers. I.e. they do not use an e-ink display and thus it's really hard to use them outside.

I would get a Kindle Paperwhite. They're awesome. Great for outside reading, high resolution, and built in backlight. Then use a tablet for browsing/apps.

If you want a tablet and not an e-reader just get a Nexus 7. It's much more functional than either Nook or Kindle's offerings but I still wouldn't use it as an e-reader to read novels (especially outside).

The iPad 3 is horrible on the beach. I've tried multiple times. Maybe your definition of "perfectly" is very skewed but the general consensus is any LCD display (especially the glossy ones on iPads/Macbook Pros) are horrible outside.

E-ink is what true e-readers are made of. Something like a traditional Kindle or the new Paperwhite Kindle is a 100 times better than reading on an LCD screen especially outside. You should check it out, you'll never know why you ever tried reading on the iPad outside in the first place.

If you want to buy a tablet go in the tablet thread.

Basically for reading novels -> get a real e-reader

For everything else -> get a tablet (Nexus 7)

neodata686 is right...tablets are tablets and e-readers are e-readers...neither does what the other does very well (ie. tablets are inferior for reading and e-readers are inferior for anything BUT reading)

though naturally i'm going to advocate the nook over the kindle

it comes down to preference and your habits, though

the nook is more "open source" in that it runs android and supports the epub format (which is what a lot of libraries use to lend books for free)...as a general rule, you buy your books from B&N, but you CAN get them other places

the kindle supports amazon's proprietary mobi format, which is perfectly fine if you think you'll buy books only from amazon and aren't interested in checking out books from the library (in wake county, at least, they're just now starting to support SOME mobi formats, but their epub collection is much much larger and it's easier to "check out" the books, last time i looked when i had a kindle)

you can easily install a variety of free apps on your nook that will open both epubs and mobis, but rooting a nook isn't something your average consumer wants to do

i was under the impression that amazon was going to start charging sales tax, so the advantage of that over B&N isn't an advantage much longer...prices for the same book at each place is going to be roughly the same

as for the hardware, my last kindle (k3 keyboard) felt more substantial than my nook simple touch, but i haven't actually had any trouble with the NST...i really like the touchscreen on my nook and it was one of the reasons that i switched from the kindle...i also like that it has expandable storage because i use my nook for more than just e-reading, though for the VAST majority of people, it makes little difference...the newest kindles are slimmer, thinner, and lighter than the nooks...performance-wise, the kindle and nook e-readers are comparable

in terms of cost, you can buy a basic (non-touchscreen with no integrated light) kindle with ads for $70 or a nook simple touch (still no integrated light) for $80 with no ads

the kindle paperwhite (with touchscreen and integrated light) is $120 with ads...the nook simple touch with glowlight (touchscreen and integrated light) is $120 without ads and is lighter than the paperwhite

^^Fuck that. I have a Nook Color, Simple Touch, and iPad 3. Guess which one I read on all the time. The iPad. Why? Because I have it on me all the time. I started off carrying a separate e-reader, for like a week. Then I said, this is stupid and just carried the iPad. Now, I will admit reading in the sun on the iPad is not as good, but I still read outside while waiting at the bus stop for a few minutes every day. Bottom line, those few minutes a day aren't worth lugging around, charging, and syncing another device every day.

qft on the resolution part...i had forgotten about that (perhaps subconsciously???)

i'd argue that it doesn't make much difference (i already don't use the smallest font on my nook because then i can't read it), but all else being equal, i'd definitely go with a higher resolution

i think "much better" is a bit of an overstatement regarding the light, though...the paperwhite's light IS marginally brighter, but unless you're using it as a flashlight, that makes absolutely zero difference

there's also the fact that the paperwhite's screen is capacitive (and supports multi-touch) instead of IR, though i can't imagine how much difference that makes given that you're still using an e-ink screen

i think that if you're truly indifferent (ie. you don't have anything invested in one ecosystem or the other and don't want to do anything but simply read)...and you don't care about having ads...the paperwhite is the better option...i don't need to rehash why i like open-source and greater flexibility in my device, though

it all depends on your lifestyle and habits...i have a smartphone with a decent-sized screen and when i want to use a "real" computer, a tablet simply isn't powerful enough...so i have a laptop

i read ALL the time, and frequently for extended periods (ie. on the elliptical at the gym for an hour)...i don't want a heavier device that (for me) causes eyestrain anyway (and while i realize i'm in the minority here, it's not by any means uncommon)

and it's a little silly to mention "lugging around, charging, and syncing another device every day"...e-readers are stupid light, hold a charge for at least a month of regular reading (mine does, anyway), and don't need to be synced on a regular basis

i get that carrying a tablet and an e-reader can be somewhat redundant, but it really just depends on the situation...it's by no means so black and white

So the NST and Kindle paperwhite cannot be used for tablet purposes (apps and web-browsing), correct?? Or are they just really shitty at it?

I'm okay with getting her just an e-reader, I'm just 50/50 on whether or not she's going to be "I can't browse on this?? What's the point??".

^^Pretty much everything you said. I actually just sold my iPad 3 after having it since release. I never used it for much, much less reading. It's heavy and has horrible battery life compared to a Kindle not to mention a kindle is much easier to hold with one hand. I read A LOT. Mainly novels and a very light weight device with a longer battery life, and ability to read it in the sun is >>>> than a large cumbersome tablet like an ipad. I have a galaxy note 2 for my phone and that's pretty much my "tablet".

Correct. You can't really browse or do any tablet features (very few exceptions).

I think you need to first answer this. What would be her main purpose for the device? Reading (i.e. novels) or browsing/playing games. If it's the former get her a true e-reader like the Kindle or Nook with e-ink. If it's the later get her a tablet.

technically, the kindle comes with an "experimental browser" and the nook can use android apps (browser included)...but it's almost PAINFUL how poorly-suited the e-ink screen is to such things, so for all intents and purposes, pretend that you can only read on an e-reader

the thing with e-readers is that they're comparatively cheap (especially if you get a basic model)...they do one thing extremely well and they do it affordably if you want to do that one thing (read) on a regular basis

just bought the beau a nook HD. It is pretty slick! I have the first generation nook and a nook color. I am kind of jealous of the nook HD and might have to pick up one after christmas.

While I like my ipad for reading textbooks since it has a larger screen, it gets really heavy to hold after a while. I like how light and sharp the nook HD screen is.

I will say that the nook HD does not play well with calibre on my computer. I was trying to sideload a few books to get him started. It is possible to load books from calibre onto the nook but you have to go to C:/users calibre library to drag and drop the titles onto the nook HD.

OR if you know how to set up the calibre content server you could put books via wireless connection.

^I have an original Nook Color too and get a bit jealous with the newer "is it a tablet? Is it an e-reader?" models.

Honestly I'm just going to get a Nexus 7. It basically outphases the Nook Color I have without the expense and entrapment of an iPad 3 (I admire a lot about the iPad line but don't want to pay the price, or buy into more apple stuff).

I really like the Kindle Paperwhite though. Honestly I love the newer Nooks too, I just realize that having a smartphone, e-reader, tablet, netbook, and desktop is too much for me... I needed to nix the e-reader through netbook with something like a Nexus 7 and a bluetooth keyboard.

Yeah...I broke down when I got in there and ended up getting her a Nook HD. Once you put it side-by-side with the Nook Color...it just not even close.

Anyone know how to transfer books from ibooks on my ipad to Nook? Google search comes up with lots of answers ranging from "it can't be done" to..."this is fucking complicated".

I'm sure you guys can come up with an Idiot's Guide way to do it.

if it doesn't and you install itune (or ibooks?) on your PC, shouldn't it sync your books? from there, you should be able to move the downloaded books to your nook

otherwise, a quick google search provides a number of programs you have to pay for (though a couple have a 10-item free trial, so it depends on how many books you have to transfer)

I can transfer the epub to the Nook...but all the pages are showing up blank. Table of Contents shows up...but that's it.

Any answers? I paid for this book on my ipad btw...so it's not a crappy torrent.
