Ok, so this is not a sport sedan but I've decided on a '11 Golf TDI 4dr. I know its above my previously stated range and its relatively slow, but 45mpg and shit tons of torque got me. It was really a blast to drive. Going to pick it up tomorrow. 11/28/2010 8:03:27 PM |

haha, ya, the toyota guy tried to start talking me into one after telling me they had no manual transmission cars on the lot, except a base corolla (no keyless entry even)
and lol at my 3rd post in this thread...
"I want something quick with a manual transmission, with space for 4-5 adults and headroom for me. I want something reliable that will not nickel and dime me to death over the next 5-10 years. Any sort of VW is out for that reason." 11/29/2010 1:10:10 AM |

The Golf has above-average reliablity and is the most reliable of the otherwise average VW line. So, that was the VW to get.

I wouldn't call that 'average' for VW as a whole. the data appears to be more 'below-average' to me
but then i might be jaded...i've got an 08 GTI with 30k miles and i've had a couple minor, but annoying problems with it...i would never trust the thing out of warranty. and i thought VW moved to a 3/36 in 09 for their bumper to bumper so i'd encourage people to stay away if that's still the case 11/30/2010 1:17:02 PM |

Yeah if I ever want a vw I'll probably consult a vw nut friend of mine or bfi before hand every year seems to have something iffy cam followers, coil packs... Something seems to be a little jacked up on every model. 11/30/2010 2:10:19 PM |

Seems quite ironic that you went for a fuel miser after stating original intentions to get a sports sedan
Slooooow car, though I'd pick the VW TDI over any hybrid without hesitation. 11/30/2010 2:11:35 PM |

Yeah its definitely not a sports car of any sort. I had a while to change my mind since the OP though
Its quite responsive, 69 mph through slalom, .87g skidpad, and it pushes you back in your seat from 2-3 krpm... The thrust is short lived but it does make it feel pretty spirited. I'm looking forward to getting it out to autocross next season. The fuel mileage is nice and VW approves up to 5% biodiesel. I got an extended warranty on it, so the 3/36 became 6/100. Figured paying for one expensive repair up front is probably worth it, though now I have to wait a lot longer to chip it/ increase boost.
I'm all growed up, and I rather enjoy having a car that encourages driving like a civilized human being. I test drove a WRX and I'm positive that I would be getting into a lot of trouble if I had bought that one... Too much fun to go fast. 12/1/2010 4:55:31 PM |

Listen, I've been driving a box van for the past few months, and before that a limping integra. How fast is fast? How rapid is rapid? How quick is quick?
Anyway its not like I couldn't handle myself, but to drive the car at its potential would be reckless in the eyes of the law. Freakin vultures in here.
Yes, bumper to bumper.
15-20 years? Probably some form of Locost, a truck/tow vehicle, and a '11 Golf TDI to get groceries. 12/2/2010 12:31:07 PM |

lol not the 3 cylinder hell they can't go the speed limit on a rainy day let alone maintain it in a turn.
the difference is if you lose control in a metro you wreck a 2000lb car at 65 if you lose control of a 911 turbo you wreck a 3XXX lbs at 120+12/2/2010 7:10:22 PM |

After riding shotgun in a 911 Turbo I can honestly say if I bought one to replace my S2000 I'd probably end up dying in a fiery car accident. 12/2/2010 8:15:31 PM |

I really love this thing in wet weather! And just filled up for the first time after the dealer-installed tankful. 600 miles on that tank driving efficiently like half the time maybe. 12/4/2010 11:35:46 PM |

So I'm bumping this to the top as I'm in the market for a new car. I bought a Hyundai Genesis sedan about a year and a half ago, and while it's been a great car, I think it was about 10 years too early for me (single, no kids, yada yada). I miss the sports sedans and coupes I've had over the past 6 years or so and I think I'd like to get back into one.
I have a pretty decent budget of up to 40-45k, but would like to stay south of it if possible. I would prefer a new or less than 3 year old car. Oh and I'm 6'4 with a size 15 foot, so I'd prefer something that can accommodate me, I don't care about the person who (unfortunately) might have to sit behind me. I'm a USAA member, so I am eligible for their pretty good pricing on most cars, but that's not a deal breaker or maker either.
Some cars that I've been interested in as of late include the IS-F (I've found a few right in my upper budget from the first year - 2008), the 2011 Infiniti G37 (I know NMSJ, but for some reason I love the car and there are great specials right now), perhaps a few year old BMW M3 (the current body is just outside my budget though and I don't know if I want to stretch it anymore than it is).
What is TWW's suggestion? I can go any way at this point as I'm just in my initial research phase, but could act as soon as tomorrow if the right deal was on the table. 12/23/2010 2:04:42 PM |

do you have the genesis with the v8? 12/23/2010 2:19:55 PM |

V6 - The price difference between the one I have and the v8 was close to 6-8k and the performance wasn't that much different. I just wanted the Lexicon stereo to be honest which I got in my V6. I think when comparing 0-60 it's like a 0.5 second difference, which was not enough to warrant getting the v8 as when I bought it they only had the one with everything in it. 12/23/2010 2:39:26 PM |

Where I live too many people have BMW 328s/335s (hooray Cary/Apex border). I like the RS4, but a quick look the 2007s cost more than a 2008 IS-F, which has a 1/2 second quicker 0-60. Not that that's a big deal, but a year newer and the ones I've seen are lower miles does mean something. With the range I'm debating, I'm wondering if I should stop considering a sedan and go for a Porsche, be it older Carrera or more recent Cayman.
The perk of my job that I have now, is that I travel a lot, so I won't be putting miles on whatever car I get, so maintenance shouldn't(hopefully) be too much of an issue, I'm just looking for the most fun per dollar I can find. If that makes sense. 12/24/2010 12:56:12 AM |

Rule of thumb for sports sedans, buy them from a company that doesn't make a habit of sticking driveshafts where they don't belong. Audi/Acura/Honda/Lexus, etc. are out. The 335 is a pretty good car if you can swing that. Cayman/911 aren't really comparable to those though.
However, a 370z might be worth looking at, if you want an actual sports car but new(-er). I've yet to drive one, though I like that they reduced weight and increased HP. It looks a lot more together too. 12/24/2010 1:17:17 AM |

How is it lexus is in the mix there? All their vehicles are RWD, with a few AWD exceptions (oh, except for that one hybrid). Toyota yes. But Lexus?12/24/2010 4:32:17 AM |

I don't view Lexus as a separate thing than Toyota, though perhaps I should. The intertubes say the ES series, HS series and RS series are still FWD or derived from it. 12/24/2010 10:40:52 AM |
