Took my first doe today with my bow. She was on the small side, but she had teats and a milk sack...does that mean she was fully grown?

I was pretty impressed with the amount of meat I got off her given her size. Gonna last a good while in the freezer.

Killed my first buck Tuesday afternoon. We have him on a trail cam at night and he's definitely the dominant buck in the area. I was sitting in a ground blind on a logging road and had a doe step out at about 100 yds. I put my reticle on her and she walked straight towards me. I was a breath away from pulling the trigger and she bolted back into the woods. Then this guy stepped out and looked straight at me. Shot him through the neck and he dropped in his tracks. I didn't have a scale to weigh him but he was at least 200lbs. He's technically a 7 but has a small G3 so I call him an 8

^^thanks man. I live in Cary now but I'm leasing some property for the year in Franklin county. It's myself and 3 others. I've taken three deer this year there. Two does (crossbow and rifle) and then this buck

moved my climber near a very active scrape this afternoon. gonna head there in the morning.

also found a climber locked to a tree yesterday while i was squirrel hunting. landowner (my land lord. i hunt less than half a mile behind my house ) said i'm the only one with permission to hunt back there, so we went down there with some bolt cutters. he's got a buck shot climber (minus the seat) now.

tomorrow will be my last bow hunt of the year. really wanted to get the 6 point we've been seeing back there with the bow, but deemarie will probably end up picking him off with her new .270. rifle season starts saturday.

I doubt that deer in the picture is 200 lbs.

head is too small to be that big.

probably more in the 170 range, still a great deer though congrats.

this guy was killed on our land this past weekend...came in at 199 lbs.

impressive. the state record was killed on/near the same track and this isnt the biggest buck by far out of the group

how is that shitty genetics?

please tell me...because his weight alone makes him worth shooting.

I know you wouldnt pass on him.

and yea I know what you mean, everyone seems to know someone...but I guarantee you the land touches and borders ours for the weight record. just hope i can get the bigger swamp donkey.

it's probably more a lack of proper minerals than it is poor genetics

you talkin about the rack??

its a decent rack...I mean we dont pour the minerals to these boys like you say

I still think its a mighty fine deer. you have to remember that guy is 200 lbs so the rack on him would look plenty big on a 150 lb deer.

finally get to go rifle hunting for the first time this year this evening

didn't have time to get in the stand yesterday when i got home from work, so i went out with the .22 to fuck with some squirrels. didn't kill any squirrels, but i jumped a deer before i even got in the woods. hopefully they'll be on the other side where the ladder stand is today.

i hate dog hunters that don't know how to stay the fuck off land that they don't have permission to hunt

From last Saturday: The dogs ran a 4-pointer and I managed to get in front of it and take it. Then later on I shot a doe from the stand as part of our wildlife management program. Dinner on Sunday was great.

funny that we have the same problem about 20 miles south of Kinston. We're bear hunting and assholes in a hunting club next to us ran a 400 lb bear thru my shooting lane a couple weeks ago. Around an hour later, I had a pretty big (~300 lbs) bear come out scared to death, but I wanted him to grow up for next year... let him go.

I'd be interested to know the laws on what can be done about the dogs that the people BLATANTLY put on our property. We've seen them park their truck at our gate and let the dogs out. We thought about catching them, taking their tracking collars to a gas station and leaving them, then taking the dogs to the pound. We'd never hurt the dogs or destroy those expensive collars, but just want to know what we can do.

got a cowhorn spike with a decent body last afternoon. I was calling with a buck grunt and heard him walking around for about half an hour before i got him to come out of some thick young pines. took him at about 10 yards with a Savage .270

i saw a cowhorn yesterday that was about 12-14" wide. he cut the corner of the field at about 230 yds. probably should've culled him out, but it was only about 3 pm. had a button buck hanging out in the bean field for at least an hour and then a doe came up out of the cutover behind me right at the edge of dark. she came to about 20 yds before she smelled something she didn't like. had some tink's #69 out there and it had her all confused ran 4 more out of another field on my way out. they're picking the beans today, so this weekend should be awesome, but i gotta work night shift all weekend.

where were you hunting at? i live about 20 miles south of kinston around trenton...

i see this thread turned to the age old debate of dog hunting vs. still setting. well, i like to do both honestly. i have been still setting, with nothing going on, hoping a dog would run through the area with something to look at. i see alot more deer still setting, but i love to hear the dogs running. unfortunately, i haven't had much time to do either this season. i shall be going tomorrow though.

Pretty decent 4 pointer this afternoon, about 130 + lbs. Hunting the mountains up near Boone, so not bad size for the area.

Red X fail, screw the picture.

only saw a little doe or possibly button buck this morning. had a turkey hang around at 50 yds for a long time so that was cool. there was a white skunk in the field when i was headed in, so i sneaked in the stand just before he walked right under me. i was scared to death he was gonna spray.

i'm bout to head back to the stand i guess.

nice buck stepped out chasing 3 does just as i was about to get out of the stand. too dark to shoot. i could see the deer and see that he had a nice rack (8 pt i'm pretty sure), but i couldn't see my crosshairs

maybe he'll give me another chance

[Edited on November 26, 2010 at 6:20 PM. Reason : spread wasn't spectacular, but he had a lot of mass]
