ATV3 should be the shit. TV/entertainment setups are so horrible to use right now.

I've finally got my ATV2 w/ XBMC on it where it's super easy for our entire house to use. We have one at each TV. I do wish it had some more horsepower to play more HD videos but that's a wish and not a need.

I'm confused about the pending announcement. Are they rolling out a new version of the Apple TV or with this possibly be a standalone set?

How can you be confused about the pending announcement. Apple has not announced anything (thus the pending) so all reports are not 100% fact. Wait until apple actually announces a product and then be confused. Though likely you won't be.

I have just been keeping my ear to the wind as their is too much speculation on upcoming apple products but from what I understand the traditional Apple TV is discontinued and they are coming out with an all-in-one TV set with built in Apple TV style software.

what the sony watchman should have been.

ATV3 looks fairly disappointing. At least they stuck to the 99$ price point. As my tv is only 720p I won't be upgrading any time soon, unless the modding community does some cool stuff with it. Based on what was done with the ATV2 I doubt it will be much more then XBMC.

a $99 XBMC box that does 1080p is pretty much my only use case for the ATV.

I have 5 Apple TVs set up in the house, and will probably only buy one of the new ones to give me 1080p on the main TV set, and just leave the others at 720.

We use the software provided by Firecore as our Media interface, and we have a 8TB media server that is automated with Sickbeard and nzbmatrix.

I finally got on board with an Apple TV (the new one) due to the 1080p support. Mainly I'm interested in screen mirroring/AirPlay

For the people with Apple TV:

- What type of cable/satellite did you have beforehand?

- What extras do you have with the Apple TV? (Hulu Plus, Netflix, antenna for local channels, etc.)

- What do you normally watch on TV? Sports, sitcoms, movies? What about the HGTV, Bravo, Travel Channel, and Food Network type channels?

- What do you "miss" about cable/satellite and would you ever go back?

First Time Warner, then Dish Network.

We have Netflix, and an antenna for locals. We also have a large storage array (8 TB) that drives most of the content for our Apple TVs. I use Sickbeard + sabnzbd to pull down tv shows, and just grab the nzbs for movies manually when I find a new one I want.

We watch a lot of sitcoms, movies, and "reality" shows like stuff on the food network, history, etc..

Dont miss a damn thing, and I wouldn't go back currently, even if we lost the ability to get new TV shows from newsgroups.

Oh...and how do you find it work for sports? You can stream ESPN3 and the local channels? Do you feel like you missing a lot of sporting events?

yeah, I don't think I could 'cut the cord' so to speak until I can get an alternative to cable/satellite for high definition live sports.

I found it to be pretty easy, though there are little side things like having a membership to nzbmatrix and to newsdemon. (Or one of the other indexers and usenet portals).

Yeah, our cable bill was hitting $150 a month, because we had all the stuff that gave us the kids channels, as well as DVRs throughout the house.

Now we just have one big "DVR".

Ommm...I didn't know there were different sized HDMI cables (not length of course...but the receiver ends). My chords are too big to fit in the AppleTV. Was not looking forward to the pain in the ass of hooking up chords behind my walls.

^ It uses a standard sized HDMI connector, not mini HDMI or anything like that. What kind of cables do you have?

^^^Maybe you should try using a HDMI cord instead of a chord.

I just noobed all over myself. Which I'm okay with in Tech Talk...I readily admit to not knowing what I'm doing the majority of the time.

I had the correct cord and the correct slot...but I don't know if I was like a teenager trying to get my dick wet for the first time and was trying to jam it in there and it just wasn't working. I looked at them both and was like, "fuck, my hdmi cord is too big...when did this happen?"

Anyways...the only problem I'm having now is that when I mirror with my ipad, all that shows up is a small box on the TV. I want it to go full screen (or at least wide screen). I've fucked around with the "TV Resolution" settings on Apple TV...but it still doesn't change. I have a 1080p - 60Hz TV...and this is the new ipad.

Thoughts?

Edit to add that I did just play a video and made it full screen. Which is pretty much what I care about 95% of the time...but it would be nice if it was always full screen...

That's how it works. It displays the native resolution of the iPad during normal screen sharing mode. (Or I should say the native resolution of the iPad2) Games like Real Racing HD 2 will change the resolution to fullscreen, and videos and pictures will take up the full display, but during normal use, all you'll get is the same dimensions as the iPad, which, if you think about it, is really the only way they could do it. It's screen mirroring, not adding a second monitor to a PC.

[Edited on May 11, 2012 at 12:54 PM. Reason : when you say "small box" you mean it fills up like ~80% of the screen, right? That's how mine works.]

Eh...I guess you could say 80%...but looks more like 65-70%. Maybe it's because my TV is so big that it makes it look like the blank screen is bigger than it really is.

But no worries. Like I said, will use it to mainly watch TV/Videos/ESPN3. Thanks for the info.

i did!! i canceled my trial week and told them the reason was because I couldn't stream over Apple TV and that if I could I would have kept them. The work around was to mirror the iPad through the Apple TV but I couldn't get it to be full screen

You can't? I haven't tried Hulu yet, but my Directv app was able to go full screen. Although I did have the ABC app not go full screen. Why will some videos/apps go full screen and not others?

Because the people that wrote the app don't want you to be able to use it in that way. Same reason they don't already have an app for the Apple TV, same reason they block the browser id on a Google TV browser, same reason you have to update the XBMC hulu plugin every week because they keep trying to block that from working. But it does still work, by the way. If you're looking to get Hulu on the TV, that's probably your best bet. It's also a lot better solution than involving an iPad and Airplay.

Why would Hulu not want you to watch programs full screen on a TV?

Long story short, it would cost them money, and it's probably not worth it.

well i would assume that i'm not the only person to drop Hulu because they don't allow streaming full screen. it might be in their best interests.

It's all about the same.

With the ESPN app available, I now have to revisit getting rid of Directv.

This is what we mainly watch in our household:

ESPN
Comedy Central
HGTV
Food Network
Travel Channel
TNT
AMC
Various Major Network shows like Grimm, Modern Family, etc.

We use my fiancee's sister's Time Warner Cable login to watch HBO and now...ESPN.

With the exception of the local news...what can I not get on Apple TV from a combo of Hulu Plus, Netflix, and possible Amazon Prime??

does the ESPN app cover ALL the ESPN channels or just the main ones?

and what about all the SportsSouth, and other channels that show football games during the fall?

pretty much sports and local news are the only things keeping me from trying this.
