have any of you seen anything concrete (or have a good idea) of what video card would be necessary to run this on medium settings? i've never been one to buy stupid expensive video cards because, quite honestly, i don't care...but i will need to upgrade so i want to keep an eye out for deals in the next couple of months

i don't even remember which card i have in my computer right now, but it's probably something anemic like a GT 240 or something (might be a GTS 250)

answered my own question...seems like something along the lines of a GTX 460 or radeon HD 5850 should run it on pretty high settings

Betheseda should be getting a cut from all the hardware manufacturers, because everyone I know is building a new system for this game.

I'm pretty sure DICE/EA would get the check first if that was the case.

Battlefield 3 sounds like it's going to be more demanding on PC hardware.

I know the PC mods make that version better, but Skyrim just feels like it's more of a console game than BF3.

Bethesda games never feel like console games because of the modding community. It's something you just can't do on consoles and it's why I wouldn't even consider getting a bethesda RPG on a console. I mean if you're just talking about sales, BF3 will certainly sell far more on consoles also.

^^ And this is the xbox version. Can't wait to see some shots of the PC version.

I really doubt it, because history has shown Elder Scrolls games push the envelope for PC tech.

Time will tell, but it's not like these new builds aren't also designed to slay BF3, Rage, etc.

I know... seriously wtf... Someone doesn't know what the whole point of these games are.

Personally, I think Skyrim will be more demanding on the PC than BF3 will be, at least what I saw during the open Alpha. They really made Frostbite 2 engine much more efficient than the 1st one so I'm not too worried about getting playable frame rates on my 5870. Now on Skyrim... I have no idea what I'd get.

And also... the makers of the nehrim mod are already making their sequel on Skyrim! Pretty badass that they are already modding a game that hasn't been released yet.

Man I need my eyes examined. Since early on I always saw and want to call it "Squirm" so I have to make an effort to say it right now.

So, does it still have the same level up system as Oblivion? I was never a fan. I felt like I had to waste a lot of time leveling skills in common subgroups before I leveled to make sure I didn't get shorted points - or to make sure I maximized the number of points I could possibly get from leveling. In the end this just turned into playing the game normally and console commanding myself the missing points.

Also curious about whether enemies level with you, or if it sticks to my preferred method - just don't go to that area until you level some more. Guess I need to read up on this, I've largely kept myself from the details.

Yeah, I've been thinking about picking up a 2nd one lastly. I had two initially, but sold the 2nd for a little profit since one at the time was more than enough speed to get good frames in modern games.

Either that or sell it and go with nvidia 560's in SLI.

it looks like 6850s can be had for $130 and 6870s for $150 or so AR

they usually come with two games (usually two of these three: stalker, deus ex, and shogun)...seems like you can sell these, but i don't know

in any case, i figure they'll come down another $10 next month and the 6850 should run skyrim beautifully

They've mentioned that it'll be like Fallout 3. Each area has a level range and your level determines where in that range the bad guys will be.

No, there are no classes now so there are no class skills.

Just play and you get better at things you use. When you gain enough skill points you level up and pick a perk.

you can, pretty easy. Just offload the codes on ebay, craigslist or gaming websites like steam forums or cheap ass gamer (CAG). Whenever I get extra copies of games on my steam account, I just post on those forums and within a few hours, I'll get quite a few emails from people who want them.

So besides modding and the potential for better resolution, is there any particular reason to play this on the PC vs a console? I definitely prefer to play it with a game pad on my TV vs a mouse and keyboard sitting at a desk (I realize you can do that with a PC too)

The only windows PC I own now is Atom based. What's the cheapest way to be able to play this game decently? Is it possible on a ~$300 rig, or are we looking at way more?

if you catch the deals and reuse things like your HDD, keyboard/mouse, monitor, etc, it's definitely playable on a $300 rig

my brother just built one for about $240 that will play it just fine, though i'd throw another $60 at the video card to make it better

In terms of building a whole rig at 300 that can play modern games is a tall order. But like quagmire asks, if you have other parts laying around, it can be done, specially since amd desktop chips are insanely cheap. I'd look at the A6/A8 APU's since the GPU in that is a 6520, which isn't fast, but probably could play skyrim on low settings. Personally, I'd go towards the x4 route. If you keep an eye on slickdeals for other pc parts, you should be able to do it.

The more expensive components is going to be your cpu, mobo and gpu, everything else could probably get away with spending $20ish. Don't forget the OS, but if you can get the student upgrade for 30 or 40, it could work.

Here's a good article on maxpc

yeah, i probably should have qualified my statement by noting that it would have to be an AMD system

there is nothing wrong with AMD, though...they're a much better value (cost for performance for most people) than intel chips

if your sole purpose is to build a machine you can play skyrim (and other games) on, realize that you don't NEED a quad core (though they're not much more expensive than a dual and given how hard it is to find triples that can be unlocked, you might as well pay for quad), you don't NEED more than 4gb of decent system memory, you don't NEED a high-end case, you don't NEED a feature-packed mobo

off the top of my head: $120 for cpu/mobo, $40 for memory, $20 for case, $40 for psu, $90 for decent video card...so that's $310, but you could easily drop it by $20 or so if you find a good deal, wait for video card prices to drop a bit more, get a more budget-minded cpu/mobo, etc

I would go with 8GB of memory as your minimum instead. Other than that, quag is about right. However, don't expect to slay the game, but you'll get decent frames at low settings. In my opinion, playing Skyrim at low settings would depress the hell out of me. You might want to consider just playing it on a console at that point (Never thought I'd recommend that, yuck).

well, 8gb would be my recommendation for any new build...i'm just saying they likely don't NEED 8gb for it to run smoothly (but then, i was under the impression that most modern games rely much more heavily on video memory than system, so...)

a non-kinect 4GB xbox 360 is what...$200 now? that and $60 for the game keeps you under $300 and it's a lot less hassle

Those are the reasons to play it on the PC. The modding community for Bethesda games is quite possibly the richest of any PC company. But if you don't currently have the rig for it but do have a 360 then just play it on the 360.

The only other reason I'd add is the massive benefit of using a mouse and keyboard. I have muscle-memory going back a decade with my hands that gives me a huge edge over other gamers, and in most games. Granted, it's not multi-player, but the point remains as gaming controllers are more sluggish controls imo.

Well this is a hack and slack game, personally probably just as easy to play with a controller as a keyboard and mouse. Since I have this kick ass computer right now... I might as well play it on a pc rather then a stupid console. lol

Eh. I don't really see the point in spending $300 to put together a machine that only plays this at the minimum settings. If I was going to play it on the PC, I'd probably end up putting together something that was able to max it out. And I'd imagine that would be in the range of $1000 or so? I just don't think I can justify that sort of cash to play one game (although, it is a testament to Bethesda that I am considering it) Are there high end PCs that you can rent for a few months at a time?

But seeing as how I don't really care that much about modding, and would probably use my 360 controller even if I did have the PC version, I'll probably end up getting this for the 360 or PS3.

at any given time its usually around $700 to buy a complete pc (no monitor) that will run pretty much anything at max settings.

also the quality gap between 360 games and pc games is pretty huge and keeps expanding.

bf3 on 360 aint gonna look close to what it looks like on pc.
