The gf and I are without insurance, I make around 25k a year. Birth control pills are ~$25 out of pocket at RiteAid which we alternate months who pays. How is that expensive? 1/3/2011 10:50:44 PM |

That's not expensive, no argument there. If it was a pill for me than I would do it, but I am not the one taking them.

I think all your talk about people being spoiled was so troubling because you seem to be the spoiled one.
People who actually grew up without a lot of means would never need to make this thread because they'd already know what happens if you get pregnant without insurance--in their lives, they would have probably seen it happen to their mother, their sister, their neighbor, their brother's girlfriend, their best friend's mom, or somebody! It's like you're a super sheltered, spoiled rich kid who wants to know if working class people are getting some sort of sweet deal--they're not--or if being purposefully poor so you can qualify for Medicaid/some program is a good idea--it isn't!

The next time the "romance happens and you just can't help it" stop and think about the child you could bring into this world. Think about your combined salary and how you will struggle for the years to come and you will do everything you can, but yet you just can't get ahead. You aren't even married yet, do you really want to start off a marriage with having to raise a child? The fact of the matter is, you can help it. You can have the self control to stop and put a condom on. What does it take 30 seconds, tops? 30 seconds as opposed to 18-22 years. Stop being irresponsible and start thinking about the possible consequences of your actions.

So the issue is that while the pills aren't expensive, you refuse to [help] pay for them because you're not taking them, and I assume the girlfriend FIANCE has some issue with this because she doesn't want to take BC either.
I see this marriage going well.
Is there a legit medical reason she can't take BC (increase in blood clots, for example)?
Btw condoms are wayy more expensive than BC depending on how much you have sex...unless you're depending on those 3 freebies a day from the NC State Health Center.1/4/2011 8:26:25 AM |

Condoms are cheap online, and compared to the cost of spawn it's worth getting them AND the pill. If you do it twice a day it'll cost you about $60 a month for both, way cheaper than a kid. 1/4/2011 9:38:39 AM |

If you think BC is expensive, you have no idea how quickly out of hand your finances will get once you get preggers.
Paying for BC is minuscule compared to the costs of bearing and RAISING (properly) a child. You need to re-evaluate your situation if BC is too much.

This has been blow out of proportion b/c of the amount of people that jump on a high horse and get worked up over health care.
we had one scare after a bc prescrip (that cost 70$/month) ran out and got scared and we were curious. My sis was different cuz she married into the military.
I think that it is ridiculous for conservatives to expect someone that is completely independent of their parents making 1200-1500 $ a month pay all of their bills (rent, car, car insurance, power, utilities, phone, internet, etc..) and groceries and then on top of that, another 150-250 for health insurance. You are asking them to sacrifice so much that you don't have to that it is what I hate most about this countries policies.
On top of that, I think that it is inherently racist b/c the people affected most by these policies are the blacks and hispanics.
So, the next time you or someone else says "I dont want my hard earned dollars to pay for someone elses healthcare", just think of how many people are already completely fucked by the system.
Healthcare should be universal, and people should not have to go in debt to have a baby. Look at England, that's what they do. What the fuck is so special about us?

Please do not represent the argument for a more nationalized health care in this manner.
People paying taxes and buying coverage are already having to eat the costs of those with out. By nationalizing healthcare, we could cut out a lot of needless middlemen, and lower total OH and admin costs. Not to mention, by having more access, one can reduces more expensive visits once a health issue has progressed, and the added health/mental savings of the reduction of stress (which adds to health costs in the long run). A healthy society also can be more productive--pay more taxes indirectly via expenditures previously offset or via a higher gross income --income tax.y

I signed up to insurance for 2 years and spent $7,200.
I visited the doctor ONE TIME for a sore throat. I only saved $39 out of the $141 bill. I'd have to spend $5000 out of my own money in one year in order to profit from the thousands I put into it.
I was paying $300/month, they should have covered all of this shit.
I canceled the insurance policy and I'm not guaranteed my money back
Why should I have to pay for other people's hospital bills.
The only way you win at insurance is if you fail at life! Fuck that gamble so early in my life.

I'm trying very hard to avoid that assumption. Its not about rich people so much as it is the mid class that are in a position to get insurance through jobs or parents or whatever, and then not being sympathetic to those that don't have access to insurance.

this is spot on. Free healthcare isn't free. You either pay out your ass for private coverage or you pay the government a monthly fee for it. Or we can do a mixed system like Australia. But that money does have to come from somewhere, and it ain't coming from the sky.
^ And your girlfriend can have access to insurance via you. Just get the piece of paper from Register of Deeds.

It doesn't make sense that I get $1,000,000 coverage at 300/month, it would take me 3333 months to pay a bill of that size off. That's 278 years of paying. IF they are guaranteed to lose money if I use it, and people assure me that I'm going to use it ONE DAY......how do they make money?
If everyone who had insurance had to use it, then the system is guaranteed to not be there when you need it. The only way for it to be there is if most people overpay or don't use the insurance at all.
You have to realize, also, when you're paying insurance, you're paying for advertising and commission for the people that sell you insurance as well. You're paying for all the overhead paperwork, you're paying for that company's lawyers, utilities, business licenses, their whole existence. I can't begin to fathom how much it costs to maintain an insurance company, but it's not cheap. Did I mention the workers are paid really well???
If the insurance company can gamble and think they'll make money off me at $300/mo, i'll take my odds as a healthy responsible adult to pay MYSELF $300/month. Every year, I will make $3600, in ten years, I'll have $36000, in 20 years I'll have $72000.
Best of all: - I get to keep the money if I don't use it. - I don't have to "wonder" if insurance is going to cover something - I have money to play with - I can probably make a cash deal with the doctor as an "uninsured patient" and significantly decrease my bill

Well.... thank god health insurance isn't mandatory yet.
unlike car insurance.
For businesses there is workman's comp insurance, act of terrorism insurance, an a 1000 options you can toggle for business insurance.
then at home, there is homeowner's insurance with optional fire insurance, flood insurance, act of god insurance,
Then there is life insurance and now they want to sell you insurance every time you check out at walmart on appliances or electronics.
How much does that shit add up?1/4/2011 3:04:46 PM |
